  • Into the Drowning Deep

Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant

RECOMMENDED: Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and it’s being price-matched. Elyse & I really enjoyed this horror/sci-fi novel. We jointly reviewed the book and ultimately decided on a B. We loved the cast of characters, but found the ending anticlimactic.

New York Times bestselling author Mira Grant, author of the renowned Newsflesh series, returns with a novel that takes us to a new world of ancient mysteries and mythological dangers come to life.

Seven years ago, the Atargatis set off on a voyage to the Mariana Trench to film a “mockumentary” bringing to life ancient sea creatures of legend. It was lost at sea with all hands. Some have called it a hoax; others have called it a maritime tragedy.

Now, a new crew has been assembled. But this time they’re not out to entertain. Some seek to validate their life’s work. Some seek the greatest hunt of all. Some seek the truth. But for the ambitious young scientist Victoria Stewart this is a voyage to uncover the fate of the sister she lost.

Whatever the truth may be, it will only be found below the waves.

But the secrets of the deep come with a price.

  • The Twelve Dates of Christmas

The Twelve Dates of Christmas by Jenny Bayliss

The Twelve Dates of Christmas by Jenny Bayliss is $1.99! This is a contemporary holiday romance (maybe women’s fiction?) and it set in England. As a side note, I did an event with the author and she was an absolute delight. It was a panel on Christmas romances.

‘Tis the season for finding romance in this hilarious and uplifting holiday read

When it comes to relationships, thirty-four-year-old Kate Turner is ready to say “Bah, humbug.” The sleepy town of Blexford, England, isn’t exactly brimming with prospects, and anyway, Kate’s found fulfillment in her career as a designer, and in her delicious side job baking for her old friend Matt’s neighborhood café. But then her best friend signs her up for a dating agency that promises to help singles find love before the holidays. Twenty-three days until Christmas. Twelve dates with twelve different men. The odds must finally be in her favor . . . right?

Yet with each new date more disastrous than the one before–and the whole town keeping tabs on her misadventures–Kate must remind herself that sometimes love, like mistletoe, shows up where it’s least expected. And maybe, just maybe, it’s been right under her nose all along. . . .

  • Poldark

    Poldark by Winston Graham

Poldark by Winston Graham is $2.99! This classic was turned into a popular PBS series that was frequently recapped here. Redheadedgirl gave it an A and lots of squeeing ensued.

    Cornwall, 1783-1787

Tired from a grim war in America, Ross Poldark returns to his land and family, only to find his father has died, his estate is derelict, and the girl he loved is engaged to another. But then he rescues a half-starved urchin girl and takes her home—an act which, it turns out, will alter his life

  • Wild Hearts

    Wild Hearts by Vivian Wood

Wild Hearts by Vivian Wood is 99c! I thought we had featured this one before, but perhaps the cover or cover model just looks super familiar. Judging by the description, it seems like an opposites attract romance with a grumpy hero.

In order to find love, you must set your heart free.

All her life, Faith has lacked a true, deep connection to someone. Her parents are long buried, her friends are too busy, and all she has is her job in corporate law to make her feel grounded. Each day is like the last with no telling if there will ever be something more for her. When a distant aunt passes away and leaves Faith her land, Faith has to put her empty life on hold and travel across the country to settle the estate.

A West Coast girl used to a fast paced lifestyle, Faith is ready to be entirely unimpressed by what she finds on the Georgia coast. That is, until she meets Alex.

Strong, tall, and decidedly anti-social, Alex is everything that Faith has been dreaming of her whole life. The fact that he scowls as he shows her the wonders of her new land doesn’t bother her… not like seeing him without his shirt does, anyway

  1. DonnaMarie says:

While I was underwhelmed by the ending of the Grant book, it was a pretty good time getting there. Interesting, intelligent take on the denizens of the deep dark sea. And sequel?

  2. Ren Benton/Lena Brassard says:

@DonnaMarie: Sequel is not hugely likely due to publisher math.

If you read that explanation and say “wow, that seems like a really boneheaded way to run a business,” sorry I can’t hear you over the screams of authors sabotaged by their publishers.

  3. Kareni says:

@SB Sarah, I am sorry to see that the annoying CA Avocados ad is back. Any chance of getting it removed permanently?

  4. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Kareni: I don’t see avocados, but every day I fight the battle of the Sonic pop-ups to open a post.

  5. Poldark is easy to read–I know that’s not always the case for older books, at least not for me. I convinced my old book club (Reading the Classics) to read it, but I’m afraid they dismissed it as “shallow” (although everyone did say they enjoyed reading it). Sigh.

I’ve read only the first volume but my mom read the entire series and loves to talk about everything the TV series did wrong.

  6. @SB Sarah says:

Oy that’s bothersome. Thanks for the heads up- I’m on it.

  7. Laurel says:

@Emily Jane Buehler I have also read all of the Poldark books, but many years ago, after the first TV show was made and before the current one was a glimmer in anyone’s eye. They were not written as romances, so readers of this blog should keep that in mind, but there is romance in them. I enjoyed the series. It was only four books at first, but the TV show did so well that Winston Graham wrote more in the series. Be aware that at some point, I can’t remember which book, there is a scene with dubious consent. It wasn’t considered an issue at the time, but a modern reader will find it off-putting at the very least.

  8. Kareni says:

    @SB Sarah, many thanks!

@DDD, I sympathize. I generally don’t have a problem opening posts, but the avocados can make what would be a ten second comment take three or four frustrating minutes.

  9. Janella says:

I really enjoyed The Twelve Dates of Christmas, I think it was my favorite book last Christmas

  10. Emily Jane says:

@Laurel In the recent TV series, there is also a married couple with ongoing lack of consent; I’m not sure if this is in the books, though. That’s interesting that the later books came after the original TV series.

  11. Francesca says:

@Emily Jane Yes, that goes on in the books, too.

I loved, loved, loved the Poldark books and I own the original series, but I’m not sure how well they’d hold up on a re-read.

  12. ReadKnitSnark says:

@Ren Benton/Lena Brassard Thank you for that tweet chain, I guess I will be buying FEEDBACK asap… (It was already on my list, but I haven’t read book 3 yet, so I was trying to be kind to my TBR and waiting to read it before buying and reading book 4.)(And somehow I just haven’t been in the mood for infectious zombie diseases and politics lately. Go figure.)
