HaBO: Main Characters’ Parents Were Having an Affair

This HaBO comes from Ky, who wants to find this contemporary romance. Content warning for the description below:

I’ve been desperately trying to find the the name of this book that I read around 2018-20. I think it was written in the 2010s and I read it as an ebook.

These are the details I remember:

– I think the couple were childhood sweethearts and they broke up after discovering their parents were having an affair together. It was the heroine’s mother and the hero’s father. Both of their families were pretty well off at the beginning.

– At the beginning of the book, I believe the heroine’s mother kills herself and heroine goes to a snowy cabin to sort out her mother’s affairs where she sees the hero again. There they are snowed in together.

– The hero is quite cruel to heroine in the present because he blames her for their parents’ affair together.

– I remember the heroine being a teacher at a private school and I think she was being stalked or blackmailed.

Lots going on here! Who knows this one?

Sounds rather like Kelly Hunter’s The Man She Loves to Hate. The hero’s father and heroine’s mother were having a long-term affair, and the hero dislikes the heroine because of it. The hero and heroine separately have to go to a ski resort owned by the hero’s family to deal with problems there, because the hero’s father died and the heroine is cleaning out her mom’s stuff. The mother didn’t die, though. There’s an avalanche and the H & h get snowed in together. The h isn’t a teacher, though, she’s a graphic artist. So maybe just a really similar book to the HaBO?

I definitely think I have read this! Could it possibly be Alisha Rai’s Hate to Love You? I think the elements are very similar. And some of the other elements are from the other books in the series (stuck in a cabin…) I’ll keep searching, but it is familiar to me for sure.

Edit, it’s Hate to Want You, not Hate to Love You!

I’m pretty sure I read this and I haven’t read Kelly Hunter’s The Man She Loves to Hate or Alisha Rai’s Hate to Want You (although I own the latter one). I read it around the same time frame so I suspect it was a bargain ebook listed here on SBTB. None of that is very helpful but it was a book I mostly forgot until I read this HABO. Then it came back and I remember thinking as I read it that the heroine was getting too much flak for her mother’s choices.

Mostly this is another wake up call that I need to keep better track of the books I’ve read. Aging, ebook reading (no distinguishable physical object with cover) and high volume of reading means I don’t remember the more forgettable books as well.
