Cover Awe: Mystery, Caitriona Balfe, & More

Welcome back to Cover Awe! This is where we gawk at pretty covers.

Cover design by Red Raven Book Design

Tara: I can’t get over how beautiful this cover is.

Shana: That is lovely.

Sarah: I have questions about that lipstick. Specifically which one it is because wow

Gorgeous pink/red.

Sneezy: Yes! And it looks so simple at first glance but everything comes together to look so warm and lush!

The Highlander's Excellent Adventure by Shana Galen. A brunette in a voluminous soft green gown is running away from the reader. It's soft and romantic and whimsical

Cover design by The Killian Group, Inc.

Amanda: Saw this on a site ad and I did a double take.

Elyse: I feel like they definitely channeled Caitriona Balfe.

Watch Over Me by Nina Lacour. The cover background is robin's egg blue. A blonde young woman is wrapped in a textured gray shawl. Her hair is standing straight up, as if she's hanging upside down and pink and white flowers are in her hair.

Cover design by Samira Iravani

Maya: I love the texture in the blanket/shawl!!!

Amanda: This cover always trips me up because I get the sense that she’s upside down.

Sneezy: It has such tranquil stillness and so much flowing movements, all at once.

The Conductors by Nicole Glover. A Black woman stands in a grayish forest. One hand is holding a lantern, while the other is tucked into her pocket. The white outline of a bird soars behind her.

Cover art by Elizabeth Leggett

Cover design by Martha Kennedy

Carrie: I love the use of greys and browns contrasting with the white bird and her “Do not fuck with me” expression.

Maya: It’s all mystery! Danger! Magic! And I must know more!!!!!

Amanda: Love this! Especially the hand in the pocket, which could either read that she’s completely unbothered or is ready to whip out a weapon.

Sneezy: I love how the bird looks like it’s covering her from above and almost curled around her protectively. And all the colours are so beautiful together!!!

The cover for Watch Over Me is creeping me out a bit. She doesn’t look upside down to me; rather she looks as though she is being restrained by her hair. It summons up a vague image of an illustration I saw in the dimly recalled past. I believe it was in a book of fairy tales and consisted of a room with a bunch of women hung up by their hair. Bluebeard comes to mind or the nastier interpretations of Rapunzel. Oh well, one person’s awe is another person’s squick.

OT sort of: Are each of the four covers inserted with the same tags/whatever? I can see the first two in Firefox, but not the last two, and it happens regularly on this site. Android is a little better, but neither can show me spoilers. Just wondering if anyone has a similar problem.

  3. @Amanda says:

@Darlynne: I insert all four covers the same way and none should be under spoiler tags.

  4. Louise says:

    @Darlynne:
Click on the padlock icon next to the address. There will be some blahblah about FF blocking parts of the site that aren’t secure. Tell it to allow all content, and the pictures will come through. (Convoluted backstory involving WordPress, CloudFlare and lazy-loading, regarding which Supreme High Bitch Sarah is probably continuing to tear out her hair.)

  5. Darlynne says:

I have pictures! Thank you, Louise and Amanda. The spoiler tag reference was for other posts. Now I have to go back and read Elyse’s Bachelorette threads.

PS: THE CONDUCTORS by Nicole Glover was great. The bird image is one of the many spells Hettie can cast.

    so many beautiful covers.

Shana’s Highlander cover is a bit different, because that model and dress have been used quite a lot, but always in a shade of purple, not green. The green makes it look fresh, plus, she changed the background and made a composite.
