The Right Swipe

RECOMMENDED: The Right Swipe by Alisha Rai is $1.99! Maya read this one and gave is an A:
The Right Swipe is an amazing, well written story about two people of color falling in love as they come to terms with how the physical, psychological, and emotional traumas they experienced continue to affect them both. It was also, for me, a quiet little moment where I felt my existence was acknowledged.
Alisha Rai returns with the first book in her sizzling new Modern Love series, in which two rival dating app creators find themselves at odds in the boardroom but in sync in the bedroom.
Rhiannon Hunter may have revolutionized romance in the digital world, but in real life she only swipes right on her career—and the occasional hookup. The cynical dating app creator controls her love life with a few key rules:
– Nude pics are by invitation only
– If someone stands you up, block them with extreme prejudice
– Protect your heart
Only there aren’t any rules to govern her attraction to her newest match, former pro-football player Samson Lima. The sexy and seemingly sweet hunk woos her one magical night… and disappears.
Rhi thought she’d buried her hurt over Samson ghosting her, until he suddenly surfaces months later, still big, still beautiful—and in league with a business rival. He says he won’t fumble their second chance, but she’s wary. A temporary physical partnership is one thing, but a merger of hearts? Surely that’s too high a risk…

RECOMMENDED: Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames is $2.99! Queen Beverly Jenkins recommended this one on a previous podcast:
The book is amazing! It’s laugh-out-loud funny in some parts. The writing is wonderful.
Clay Cooper and his band were once the best of the best — the meanest, dirtiest, most feared crew of mercenaries this side of the Heartwyld.
Their glory days long past, the mercs have grown apart and grown old, fat, drunk – or a combination of the three. Then an ex-bandmate turns up at Clay’s door with a plea for help. His daughter Rose is trapped in a city besieged by an enemy one hundred thousand strong and hungry for blood. Rescuing Rose is the kind of mission that only the very brave or the very stupid would sign up for.
It’s time to get the band back together for one last tour across the Wyld.

Bookish and the Beast by Ashley Poston is $2.99! Carrie gave this YA romance a C:
Bookish and The Beast isn’t a WOW book, but it’s a comforting, often funny YA read for romance fans who are either geeks or geek-sympathetic and who enjoy Beauty and the Beast variations.
In the third book in Ashley Poston’s Once Upon a Con series, Beauty and the Beast is retold in the beloved Starfield universe.
Rosie Thorne is feeling stuck—on her college application essays, in her small town, and on that mysterious General Sond cosplayer she met at ExcelsiCon. Most of all, she’s stuck in her grief over her mother’s death. Her only solace was her late mother’s library of rare Starfield novels, but even that disappeared when they sold it to pay off hospital bills.
On the other hand, Vance Reigns has been Hollywood royalty for as long as he can remember—with all the privilege and scrutiny that entails. When a tabloid scandal catches up to him, he’s forced to hide out somewhere the paparazzi would never expect to find him: Small Town USA. At least there’s a library in the house. Too bad he doesn’t read.
When Rosie and Vance’s paths collide and a rare book is accidentally destroyed, Rosie finds herself working to repay the debt. And while most Starfield superfans would jump at the chance to work in close proximity to the Vance Reigns, Rosie has discovered something about Vance: he’s a jerk, and she can’t stand him. The feeling is mutual.
But as Vance and Rosie begrudgingly get to know each other, their careful masks come off—and they may just find that there’s more risk in shutting each other out than in opening their hearts.

India Black by Carol K. Carr is $3.99! This is book one in the Madam of Espionage historical mystery series. This might be a good option if you’ve exhausted all of your historical mystery options. Have you read this series?
In the red-light district of London, India Black is in the business of selling passion her clientele will never forget. But when it comes to selling secrets, India’s price cannot be paid by any man…
In the winter of 1876, the beautiful, young madam, India Black, is occupied with her usual tasks—keeping her tarts in line, avoiding the police, and tolerating the clergyman bent on converting her girls. But when Sir Archibald Latham of the War Office dies from a heart attack while visiting her brothel, India is unexpectedly thrust into a deadly game between Russian and British agents who are seeking the military secrets Latham carried.
French, the handsome, British spy, discovers India disposing of Latham’s body and blackmails her into recovering the missing documents. Their quest takes them from the Russian embassy to Claridge’s Hotel, from London to the English coast, all the while dodging Russians intent to do them harm.
But it is their own tempestuous relationship they will have to weather as India and French attempt to resist the mutual attraction between them—an attraction that can prove as deadly as the conspiracy entangling them.

The first India Black book is by far the best of the series. The other two aren’t nearly as funny. It’s been a while since I read it, but I think there may be terminology issues for members of other races. This book was written several years ago.
The speed with which I checked if KotW is on sale because a book 3 is on the horizon…
(No sign of it, alas. And it’s not NECESSARY. Each book comes to an adequate stop, no rolling cliffhangers. I just want MORE.)
Is Knights of the Wyld a romance?
Whoops, Kings of the Wyld I meant.
@Persephone: Nope. Clay is married, and loves his wife and daughter, and the other band members have various relationships. But it’s best categorized as a fantasy road trip in a world where mercenaries are treated like rock stars, complete with entourages and groupies. Really good book, though I didn’t care much for the sequel. Haven’t officially DNFed it, just put it down about half-way through and never picked it up again.
I really enjoyed Kings of the Wyld, but I love #GettingtheBandBackTogether and #FoundFamily stories. Picture the Bill Nighy-Stephen Rea vehicle “Still Crazy” in a dangerously enchated forest, and that’s kind of the vibe.
The cover of India Black is gorgeous. So evocative…
@LML: And it doesn’t fit the book content at all.
Here’s an example of dialog from India: “If he asks if you’re really an exiled Russian countess, open your dress and show him your tits.”
It’s first person POV from here.
THE RIGHT SWIPE is great. I’ll also take the opportunity to mention that Rhi appears in Rai’s Forbidden Hearts series which is fabulous. It’s steamy and soapy and takes place in the context of a family dispute over what is (essentially) Wegman’s.
@MirandaB: Oh, no! That’s so awful it made me laugh.
@LML: ‘So awful, it’s funny’ sums up the whole series.
