  • Huntress

    Huntress by Malinda Lo

RECOMMENDED: Huntress by Malinda Lo is $1.99! Carrie reviewed this one and gave it a B+, but wouldn’t recommend it for romance readers necessarily:

I recommend this for people looking for inclusive fantasy that feels at once fresh and traditional within multiple traditions.

Nature is out of balance in the human world. The sun hasn’t shone in years, and crops are failing. Worse yet, strange and hostile creatures have begun to appear. The people’s survival hangs in the balance.

To solve the crisis, the oracle stones are cast, and Kaede and Taisin, two seventeen-year-old girls, are picked to go on a dangerous and unheard-of journey to Tanlili, the city of the Fairy Queen. Taisin is a sage, thrumming with magic, and Kaede is of the earth, without a speck of the otherworldly. And yet the two girls’ destinies are drawn together during the mission. As members of their party succumb to unearthly attacks and fairy tricks, the two come to rely on each other and even begin to fall in love. But the Kingdom needs only one huntress to save it, and what it takes could tear Kaede and Taisin apart forever.

The exciting adventure prequel to Malinda Lo’s highly acclaimed novel Ash is overflowing with lush Chinese influences and details inspired by the I Ching, and is filled with action and romance.

  • Syncopation

    Syncopation by Anna Zabo

Syncopation by Anna Zabo is $1.99! This is the first book in the Twisted Wishes series and is a m/m rockstar romance. So many of my friends love this series and it features a romance between aromantic and gay heroes. The third book, Reverb, is high up on my 2020 to-read list.

Twisted Wishes front man Ray Van Zeller is in one hell of a tight spot. After a heated confrontation with his bandmate goes viral, Ray is hit with a PR nightmare the fledgling band so doesn’t need. But his problems only multiply when they snag a talented new drummer—insufferably sexy Zavier Demos, the high school crush Ray barely survived.

Zavier’s kept a casual eye on Twisted Wishes for years, and lately, he likes what he sees. What he doesn’t like is how out of control Ray seems—something Zavier’s aching to correct after their first pulse-pounding encounter. If Ray’s up for the challenge.

Despite the prospect of a glorious sexual encore, Ray is reluctant to trust Zavier with his band—or his heart. And Zavier has always had big dreams; this gig was supposed to be temporary. But touring together has opened their eyes to new passions and new possibilities, making them rethink their commitments, both to the band and to each other.

  • Appetites and Vices

Appetites and Vices by Felicia Grossman

Appetites and Vices by Felicia Grossman is $1.99! This is the first book in the Victorian era historical romance The Truitts series. It’s also set in Philadelphia and features Jewish characters. Have you read this one? Or kept up with the series?

He’s her ticket into high society…

Banking heiress Ursula Nunes has lived her life on the fringes of Philadelphia’s upper class. Her Jewish heritage means she’s never quite been welcomed by society’s elite…and her quick temper has never helped, either.

A faux engagement to the scion of the mid-Atlantic’s most storied family might work to repair her rumpled reputation and gain her entrée to the life she thinks she wants…if she can ignore the way her “betrothed” makes her feel warm all over and stay focused on her goal.

    She’s his ticket out…

Former libertine John Thaddeus “Jay” Truitt is hardly the man to teach innocent women about propriety. Luckily, high society has little to do with being proper and everything to do with identifying your foe’s temptation—an art form Jay mastered long ago. A broken engagement will give him the perfect excuse to run off to Europe and a life of indulgence.

But when the game turns too personal, all bets are off…

Baking with Mary Berry by Mary Berry

Baking with Mary Berry by Mary Berry is $1.99! Berry was a judge on The Great British Baking Show/The Great British Bake Off, and is very famous in the UK for her baking skills. This cookbook was published in November of 2015, and has a 4.1-star average. Many readers who liked it said they purchased it because of the show, but love the recipes inside, and the very clear instructions that make them seem very easy.

A sweet and savory collection of more than 100 foolproof recipes from the reigning “Queen of Baking” Mary Berry, who has made her way into American homes through ABC’s primetime series, The Great Holiday Baking Show, and the PBS series, The Great British Baking Show.

Baking with Mary Berry draws on Mary’s more than 60 years in the kitchen, with tips and step-by-step instructions for bakers just starting out and full-color photographs of finished dishes throughout. The recipes follow Mary’s prescription for dishes that are no fuss, practical, and foolproof–from breakfast goods to cookies, cakes, pastries, and pies, to special occasion desserts such as cheesecake and soufflés, to British favorites that will inspire.

Whether you’re tempted by Mary’s Heavenly Chocolate Cake and Best-Ever Brownies, intrigued by her Mincemeat and Almond Tart or Magic Lemon Pudding, or inspired by her Rich Fruit Christmas Cake and Ultimate Chocolate Roulade, the straightforward yet special recipes in Baking with Mary Berry will prove, as one reviewer has said of her recipes, “if you can read, you can cook.”

  1. DiscoDollyDeb says:

There are 83 books in today’s Kindle Daily Deals and most of them appear to be Science Fiction, Fantasy, or Paranormal. At least one of them—Adrian Tchaikovsky’s CHILDREN OF TIME ($2.99 today)—has been mentioned in a recent WAYR post.

  2. Sukari says:

Lots of books and series that have been mentioned here are KDDs. I’m definitely missing some, but I spotted: Hollow Kingdom by Kira Jane Buxton, Mercy Thompson book 9 (Fire Touched), The Space Between Worlds By Micaiah Johnson, Record of a Spaceborn Few and A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers, Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik, Kate Daniels book 3 (Magic Strikes), The Hidden Palace (sequel to the Golem and the Jinni) by Helene Wecker, and Three Discworld books: Sourcery, Wyrd Sisters, and Guards! Guards!

  3. Emily C says:

@Sukari- thanks for the listing of KDDs today. I saw many of those but not The Hidden Palace by Helene Wecker, so I’m calling that one out again!
I’m pretty sure The Golem and the Jinni has been mentioned here more than once as a favorite. It was also an 8year wait for this sequel and I’m excited to pick it up at less than full price ($4.99 still feels a deal to me for a new release).

  4. Jazzlet says:

I love the cover for Appetities & Vices, such a pleasant change to have the cover models fully clothed, and in what to my limited knowledge appears to be period appropriate clothing!

  5. Darlynne says:

Several of the sale books today were mentioned in NPRs 50 best scifi/fantasy books of the past decade, based on a recent readers’ poll. I was delighted to see I’d read most of them, but also found new-to-me titles/authors.

@Darlynne – thank you for the NPR link, that is a great list!

  7. Lisa F says:

I’d rec all four of these – I feel like Zabo’s series is super underrated, it’s fabulous if a tidge flawed.

  8. Varian Ross says:

Rock star romances are one of those things I want to enjoy, but can’t. I know too much about music, songwriting, stage work, and touring. I know how this stuff is *supposed* to work, so can’t get lost in the fantasy.

I screamed when reading one, because the hero casually *threw* his guitar across the room before banging the heroine. He didn’t check the guitar at all, just tossed it.

  9. chacha1 says:

I loved Zabo’s ‘Cinnamon Roll’ so have acquired ‘Syncopation’ with considerable interest.

@ Varian Ross – that would annoy the f*** out of me, too. One does not throw one’s instrument if one wishes to be taken seriously as a musician.

  10. Carrie G says:

    @chacha
“One does not throw one’s instrument if one wishes to be taken seriously as a musician.”

Tell that to Pete Townsend and Jimmy Hendrix! LOL! 😀

  11. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Carrie G: you beat me to it! I was coming to say that I’m old enough to remember when the highlight of every Who concert was Pete Townsend smashing his guitar. Now, even eternal bad boy Keith Richards has a “guitar concierge.”

  12. cleo says:

I liked but didn’t love the Anna Zabo – it’s not their best book, imo.

    Here’s my GR review

    3/5 stars.
The parts that worked for me, really worked. This is one of those hot, sexy stories that I enjoyed while reading it, but now that I’m done with it, I can see some annoying flaws.

I really didn’t care for the manipulative manager – and his behavior got stranger and stranger and more like a cartoon villain as the book progressed. And I still don’t really understand his motivation – beyond being a good plot device to bring our h/h together.

I’m always glad to read diverse queer characters and it was nice to read a pansexual, kinky, aromantic hero who wasn’t “cured” of being aro to get an hea.

  13. MsCellanie says:

Syncopation didn’t quite work for me. I think that might be really hard to write a romance novel with an aromantic hero (or heroine) and I don’t think this quite cleared the bar.
It was still pretty good, I just don’t think it quite came together all the way.

  14. chacha1 says:

@ Carrie & Dolly – ah but that was ON STAGE! all part of the performance. Dude doing that at home just comes across as petulant, poor-impulse-control, aggressive, probably a dick, and possibly violent. Not who I’d want in the bedroom with me, for sure.
