  • Second First Impressions

Second First Impressions by Sally Thorne

Second First Impressions by Sally Thorne is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and I believe came out earlier this year. Thorne’s debut was much-loved, though her follow up was meh for most of us. I thought someone on the site reviewed this one, but I think I’m wrong.

From the USA Today  bestselling author of The Hating Game and 99 Percent Mine comes the clever, funny, and unforgettable story of a muscular, tattooed man hired as an assistant to two old women—under the watchful eye of a beautiful retirement home manager.

Distraction (n): an extreme agitation of the mind or emotions.

Ruthie Midona has worked the front desk at the Providence Luxury Retirement Villa for six years, dedicating her entire adult life to caring for the Villa’s residents, maintaining the property (with an assist from DIY YouTube tutorials), and guarding the endangered tortoises that live in the Villa’s gardens. Somewhere along the way, she’s forgotten that she’s young and beautiful, and that there’s a world outside of work—until she meets the son of the property developer who just acquired the retirement center.

Teddy Prescott has spent the last few years partying, sleeping in late, tattooing himself when bored, and generally not taking life too seriously—something his father, who dreams of grooming Teddy into his successor, can’t understand. When Teddy needs a place to crash, his father seizes the chance to get him to grow up. He’ll let Teddy stay in one of the on-site cottages at the retirement home, but only if he works to earn his keep. Teddy agrees—he can change a few lightbulbs and clip some hedges, no sweat. But Ruthie has plans for Teddy too.

Her two wealthiest and most eccentric residents have just placed an ad (yet another!) seeking a new personal assistant to torment. The women are ninety-year-old, four-foot-tall menaces, and not one of their assistants has lasted a full week. Offering up Teddy seems like a surefire way to get rid of the tall, handsome, unnerving man who won’t stop getting under her skin.

Ruthie doesn’t count on the fact that in Teddy Prescott, the Biddies may have finally met their match. He’ll pick up Chanel gowns from the dry cleaner and cut Big Macs into bite-sized bits. He’ll do repairs around the property, make the residents laugh, and charm the entire villa. He might even remind Ruthie what it’s like to be young and fun again. But when she finds out Teddy’s father’s only fixing up the retirement home to sell it, putting everything she cares about in jeopardy, she’s left wondering if Teddy’s magic was all just a façade.

Hilarious, warm, and romantic, Sally Thorne’s novel delivers an irrepressibly joyous celebration of love and community for fans of 99% Mine and The Hating Game.

  • Malice

    Malice by Heather Walter

Malice by Heather Walter is $2.99 and a Kindle Daily Deal! This was mentioned in a previous Hide Your Wallet and is a spin on Sleeping Beauty. This is definitely on the darker side and has a romance between Princess Aurora and the evil sorceress.

A princess isn’t supposed to fall for an evil sorceress. But in this darkly magical retelling of “Sleeping Beauty,” true love is more than a simple fairy tale.

Once upon a time, there was a wicked fairy who, in an act of vengeance, cursed a line of princesses to die. A curse that could only be broken by true love’s kiss.

You’ve heard this before, haven’t you? The handsome prince. The happily-ever-after.

    Utter nonsense.

Let me tell you, no one in Briar actually cares about what happens to its princesses. Not the way they care about their jewels and elaborate parties and charm-granting elixirs. I thought I didn’t care, either.

    Until I met her.

Princess Aurora. The last heir to Briar’s throne. Kind. Gracious. The future queen her realm needs. One who isn’t bothered that I am Alyce, the Dark Grace, abhorred and feared for the mysterious dark magic that runs in my veins. Humiliated and shamed by the same nobles who pay me to bottle hexes and then brand me a monster. Aurora says I should be proud of my gifts. That she . . . cares for me. Even though it was a power like mine that was responsible for her curse.

But with less than a year until that curse will kill her, any future I might see with Aurora is swiftly disintegrating—and she can’t stand to kiss yet another insipid prince. I want to help her. If my power began her curse, perhaps it’s what can lift it. Perhaps, together, we could forge a new world.

    Nonsense again.

Because we all know how this story ends, don’t we? Aurora is the beautiful princess. And I—

    I am the villain.

  • The Midwinter Mail-Order Bride

The Midwinter Mail-Order Bride by Kati Wilde

The Midwinter Mail-Order Bride by Kati Wilde is 99c at Amazon! This is a fantasy romance with an arranged marriage or sorts. It was recently highly recommended on our latest Rec League for books with Madmartigan and Sorsha vibes!

Some might call Princess Anja of Ivermere brave for offering herself up as a bride to Kael the Conqueror, a barbarian warlord who’d won his crown by the bloodied edge of his sword. It was not courage that drove Anja from her magic-wielding family’s enchanted palace, however, but a desperate attempt to secure a kingdom of her own — even if she has to kill the Conqueror to do it. She expects pain beneath his brutal touch as she awaits her chance. She expects death if he discovers the truth of her intentions.

She didn’t expect Kael to reject her and send her back to Ivermere.

Raised in the ashes of the Dead Lands, Kael fears nothing — certainly not the beautiful sorceress who arrives at his mountain stronghold. And no matter how painful his need for her, he has no use for a bride who would only tolerate his kiss. Yet the more of Anja’s secrets he uncovers during their journey to return her home, the more determined he becomes to win the princess’s wary heart.

And Kael the Conqueror has never been defeated…

  • Just One Night

Just One Night by Kyra Davis

Just One Night by Kyra Davis is $1.99! This an erotic contemporary romance with no cliffhanger. I will warn that there is cheating involved in the book, which I know is a big off for some readers. However, if you’re willing to give it a chance, one review mentions that not all is what it seems. If you want to read the review I’m talking about and don’t mind spoilers, you can read it here.

In this New York Times bestselling erotic trilogy, a buttoned-up businesswoman takes her friend’s advice and has a fling with a stranger on a trip to Vegas—only to find herself under his mysterious, sexy power both in the boardroom and the bedroom.

Kasie Fitzgerald knows who she’s supposed to be. She’s a rising-star-workaholic at a global consulting firm. She’s the fiancée of a well-connected man who’s won the approval of her parents. People know that she’s reliable, serious, proper, cautious, pragmatic, and yes, a little predictable. She’s who Dave and her family want her to be.

But as her thirtieth birthday looms, buried feelings begin to resurrect. Her friend takes her to Vegas for one last wild and crazy night. In a dress much shorter and sexier than anything she has ever dared to wear before, she hits the blackjack tables. And meets him. Under the tailored clothes it’s clear that this is a man who is intense, powerful, and maybe even a little dangerous. With a touch of trepidation she accepts his invitation to get a drink, and before long, she’s in his hotel room.

She never gets his full name. Perhaps his anonymity is one of the reasons she’s able to give herself over to him and to the moment so completelyPerhaps it’s why she’s just had the most exquisite and passionate sex of her life. Shaken by her own behavior, Kasie tries to chalk it up to one crazy night. But when the mysterious gentleman she’s just had a fling with shows up in her office—as the CEO of a firm her company does a billion dollars of business with a year, demanding that she handle his account, and so much more—things will never be the same again. And there’s no telling where this will go…

  1. DiscoDollyDeb says:

I can’t stress how good THE MIDWINTER MAIL-ORDER BRIDE is. I’m not even a fantasy fan and this book is one of my reliable comfort rereads.

  2. Karen D says:

Though I can’t say it was a perfect book, Second First Impressions was just what I needed when I read it. It’s funny and goofy, with some poignant moments. Definitely better than Thorne’s second book.

  3. Kareni says:

Elyse reviewed Second First Impressions and gave it a B plus.

  4. Jcp says:

My favorite book of the year so far Our Darkest Night by Jennifer Robson is 2.99 today. I recommend this one to everyone about aJewish woman who pretends to be married to a Christian farmer in WW2 Italy

  5. Jennifer says:

Am I bad for rolling my eyes at ” Somewhere along the way, she’s forgotten that she’s young and beautiful,”?

  6. Rhiannon K says:

I really enjoyed the Mid-Winter bride and have reread it at least once.

Had not read Thorne’s Second First Impressions yet – it is price matched at Kobo.

I may have missed a previous explanation – I’ve noticed Apple iBooks isn’t listed anymore on the sale links. I had switched from Kindle to iBooks but am now buying a good number of ebooks on Kobo.

Also, bought Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall when it was mentioned on sale here recently and (although it is no longer on sale) I absolutely loved it, will be pre-ordering Husband Material.

  7. Sarah M says:

The Mid-Winter Bride is a great romance. Bonus is that the sequel The Midnight Bride is not only available on Amazon but you can listen to the audio book for free on the Read Me Romance podcast. It has dual narration. I actually came across the sequel before the first book in the series via the podcast.

  8. Ren Benton/Lena Brassard says:

CATHERINE HOUSE by Elisabeth Thomas is $1.99 at multiple sellers. I could have sworn somebody here reviewed it, but no joy upon searching; maybe it was a comment? Anyhoo, sinister school with a “dangerous agenda” and “mysterious curriculum” for those who can gain the inner sanctum.

  9. Chemchik says:

I need to re-read the blurb since other commenters have liked Mail Order Midwinter Bride, but I gotta say my first impression was “she’s so skinny that she can wear an UGG boot as a dress.” Sigh, SFF covers.

  10. I_Simon says:

I echo Karen D ‘s comment, Second First Impressions was a sweet romance with funny and poignant moments and I really enjoyed it.

  11. Stacey says:

I found Catherine House to be interesting but incredibly claustrophobic. There was something missing, for me, though I couldn’t quite say what. Your mileage may vary, of course!

  12. Musette says:

Loved ‘Second First Impressions’, a charming read, though the cover is deceiving (clear-skinned guy with short hair).

  13. Lisa L says:

Too late for the sale on Mid-Winter Bride – dang! And none of my e-accessible libraries has it 🙁

I read Malice and it did not go where I expected it to go. Definitely darker than I thought it would be and I don’t want to do any spoilering. I would suggest that Seraphina and it’s sequel Shadow Scale by Rachel Hartman hit some of the same themes without the darkness. They are also qualified as YA.

  14. The Other Kate says:

BE WARNED!! Malice is one half of a planned ideology, and the second half doesn’t have a release date yet. I enjoyed it, but didn’t realize it wasn’t a stand-alone novel, which was jarring.
