Dukes and Necromancy

  • Last Night with the Earl

Last Night with the Earl by Kelly Bowen

RECOMMENDED: Last Night with the Earl by Kelly Bowen is $1.99! I so loved this book and gave it an A-. This is the second book in the Devils of Dover series, but can be read out of order (I did).

For readers who love slow burn historicals that have a focus on emotional healing, I can’t push this into your hands or onto your e-readers fast enough.

After Waterloo, Eli Dawes, Earl of Rivers, was presumed dead-and would have happily stayed that way. He’s no longer the reckless young man he once was, and only half as pretty. All he wants is to hide his scars away in his country home. But when he returns home and tries to sneak into his old bedroom in the middle of the night, he’s shocked to find someone already there.

Rose Hayward remembers Eli as an arrogant rake who helped her late fiancé betray her. Finding him stealing into the house currently rented by Haverhall School for Young Ladies doesn’t correct her impression. Her only thought is to get him to leave immediately. Yet the tension between them is electric, and her painter’s eye can’t help but admire him, scars and all. He might be back from the dead, but now Rose will do anything to make him feel truly alive.

  • Forbidden Promises

    Forbidden Promises by Synithia Williams

Forbidden Promises by Synithia Williams is $1.99! This was a previous Hide Your Wallet pick and the first in the Jackson Falls small town romance series. It seems somewhat low angst if you’re looking for that kind of read. Correct me if you’ve read it and I’m wrong.

What do you do when you want the one person you can never have?

Get in and get out. That was India Robidoux’s plan for this family visit. But when her brother needs her help with his high-profile political campaign, India has no choice but to stay and face the one man she’s been running from for years—Travis, her sister’s ex-husband. One hot summer night when Travis was still free, they celebrated her birthday with whiskey and an unforgettable kiss. The memory is as strong as ever—and so are the feelings she’s tried so hard to forget.

Travis Strickland owes everything to the Robidoux family. There’s nothing he wouldn’t do for them—his divorce could never change that. Still, he has one regret. Impulsive and passionate, India always understood him better than anyone else. And the longer they work together on the campaign, the more torn he is. Coming between her and her sister is out of the question. But how can he let love pass him by a second time?

  • The Bone Maker

The Bone Maker by Sarah Beth Durst

The Bone Maker by Sarah Beth Durst is $1.99! Durst’s fantasy novels have been well reviewed here and this one was mentioned on a previous Hide Your Wallet. I’m very curious about the plot and of course, any time necromancy is involved, things are bound to go wrong.

From award-winning author Sarah Beth Durst, a standalone epic fantasy set in a brand-new world of towering mountains and sparkling cities, in which a band of aging warriors have a second chance to defeat dark magic and avenge a haunting loss.

Twenty-five years ago, five heroes risked their lives to defeat the bone maker Eklor—a corrupt magician who created an inhuman army using animal bones. But victory came at a tragic price. Only four of the heroes survived.

Since then, Kreya, the group’s leader, has exiled herself to a remote tower and devoted herself to one purpose: resurrecting her dead husband. But such a task requires both a cache of human bones and a sacrifice—for each day he lives, she will live one less.

She’d rather live one year with her husband than a hundred without him, but using human bones for magic is illegal in Vos. The dead are burned—as are any bone workers who violate the law. Yet Kreya knows where she can find the bones she needs: the battlefield where her husband and countless others lost their lives.

But defying the laws of the land exposes a terrible possibility. Maybe the dead don’t rest in peace after all.

Five warriors—one broken, one gone soft, one pursuing a simple life, one stuck in the past, and one who should be dead. Their story should have been finished. But evil doesn’t stop just because someone once said, “the end.”

  • If the Duke Demands

If the Duke Demands by Anna Harrington

If the Duke Demands by Anna Harrington is $2.99! This is the first book in the Capturing the Carlisles. Readers loved the mistaken identity element that kicks of the hero and heroines deal to help each other woo other people. Though readers warn that the hero does kiss another woman, which I know some readers don’t like.

    A LESSON IN SEDUCTION . . .

Miranda Hodgkins has only ever wanted one thing: to marry Robert Carlisle. And she simply can’t wait a moment longer. During the Carlisle family masquerade ball, Miranda boldly sneaks into his bedchamber with seduction on her mind. Soon she’s swept into rock-hard arms for the most breathtaking kiss of her life. But when the masks come off, she’s horrified to find herself face-to-face with Sebastian, the Duke of Trent—Robert’s formidable older brother.

Shocked to find Miranda in his bed, Sebastian quickly offers her a deal to avoid scandal: He’ll help her win his brother’s heart if she’ll find him the perfect wife. But what begins as a simple negotiation soon spirals out of control. For the longer this reformed rake tries to make a match for Miranda, the more he wants to keep her all to himself.

  1. TEN THINGS I HATE ABOUT THE DUKE by Loretta Chase is $1.99. Got a squee from Catherine Heloise back in December:

  2. Geneva says:

Just logged in to amazon under my account and found 65 historical romances as daily deals. Is this for everyone, of Amazon’s evil plot for me based on past buys?

  3. Kareni says:

@Geneva, it’s not only you; I was amazed that all the deals were historical romances.

  4. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Geneva: Those are the KDDs for everyone today: 65 books, all of them HR, most of them Regencies, a lot of them with “Duke” or “Earl” in the title, and lots of the Bitchery’s favorite authors: Julia Quinn, Tessa Dare, Eloisa James, Loretta Chase, Sarah MacLean, Sophie Jordan, the list goes on.

  5. Geneva says:

Thanks for the confirmation. I was able to complete a few series and try out new authors. Luckily I had extra in the book budget from extra summer hours. And that “of” in my original post should have been an “or.”

  6. Hannah Bloom says:

That sale feels like it features every traditionally published Regency romance author currently in print. Tessa Dare’s most recent book! A Miranda Neville deep cut! Holy hold my wallet.

  7. Darlynne says:

Synithia Williams was a new-to-me author and I enjoyed FORBIDDEN PROMISES. The family dynamics are really complicated and, iirc, the ending sets up some tension for the next book.

  8. squee_me says:

It IS a great deal day, in Kobo too! I picked up Loretta Chase’s A Duke in Shining Armor and Ten Things I Hate About the Duke AND Cat Sebastian’s Two Rogues Make a Right for $5 total.

  9. Shawna says:

THE BONE MAKER enchanted me – I kept wanting to read the book about their original adventure, but Durst kept doling it out slowly for an awesome slow burn. 1.99 is a total steal.

  10. Darlynne says:

Forgot to share that Tor is giving away Charlie Jane Anders’ VICTORIES GREATER THAN DEATH today only. You have to sign up for their newsletter, but it’s a great source for new/all books.
