  • The Library of the Unwritten

The Library of the Unwritten by A.J. Hackwith

The Library of the Unwritten by A.J. Hackwith is $1.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and is being price-matched. Carrie read this one and gave it a C+, noting it was the wrong book for her at the time, as it’s dark and rather angsty. Have you read it?

In the first book in a brilliant new fantasy series, books that aren’t finished by their authors reside in the Library of the Unwritten in Hell, and it is up to the Librarian to track down any restless characters who emerge from those unfinished stories.

Many years ago, Claire was named Head Librarian of the Unwritten Wing– a neutral space in Hell where all the stories unfinished by their authors reside. Her job consists mainly of repairing and organizing books, but also of keeping an eye on restless stories that risk materializing as characters and escaping the library. When a Hero escapes from his book and goes in search of his author, Claire must track and capture him with the help of former muse and current assistant Brevity and nervous demon courier Leto.

But what should have been a simple retrieval goes horrifyingly wrong when the terrifyingly angelic Ramiel attacks them, convinced that they hold the Devil’s Bible. The text of the Devil’s Bible is a powerful weapon in the power struggle between Heaven and Hell, so it falls to the librarians to find a book with the power to reshape the boundaries between Heaven, Hell….and Earth.

  • Unclaimed

    Unclaimed by Courtney Milan

Unclaimed by Courtney Milan is 99c at Amazon! This looks to be a re-released version and I feel like subverts the “revenge” trope just slightly. A woman is still being used by men, but it’s not the hero looking for vengeance.

    HER ONLY HOPE FOR SURVIVAL…

Handsome, wealthy and respected, Sir Mark Turner is the most sought-after bachelor in all of London—and he’s known far and wide for his irreproachable character. But behind his virtuous reputation lies a passionate nature he keeps carefully in check… until he meets the beautiful Jessica Farleigh, the woman he’s waited for all his life.

IS TO RUIN THE MAN SHE LOVES…

But Jessica is a courtesan, not the genteel lady Sir Mark believes. Desperate to win free of a life she despises, she seizes her chance when Mark’s enemies make her an offer she can’t refuse: Seduce Mark and tarnish his good name, and a princely sum will be hers. Yet as she comes to know the man she’s sworn to destroy, Jessica will be forced to choose between the future she needs—and the love she knows is impossible.

  • The Seduction of Lady Phoebe

The Seduction of Lady Phoebe by Ella Quinn

The Seduction of Lady Phoebe by Ella Quinn is 99c! This is the first book in the Marriage Game series and a re-release with a new cover. Many of the books are available at a discount. Readers seem divided on the heroine. Many found her unconventional and loved it! However, others never really connected with her or understood her actions.

Polite society has its rules for marriage. But for Ella Quinn’s eligible bachelors, their brides will show them that rules are for the faint of heart…

Phoebe Stanhope is not a typical Lady. As feisty as she is quick witted, no one can catch her, especially when she is driving her dashing phaeton with its perfectly matched horses. And unlike her peers, experience has guarded her against a growing list of would-be suitors. But when she encounters Marcus Finley, what she fears most burns deep within his blue-eyed gaze…

For Lord Marcus, the spark of recognition is but a moment in the love he has held these many years. Now that he’s returned to England, all the happiness he desires rests on Lady Phoebe never finding out that he was the one who turned her heart so cold and distant. He must work fast to gain the advantage—to convince her what she wants is exactly what she denies—but in order to seduce her into his arms, he must be willing to give up more than he can control…

  • The Shining Girls

The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes

The Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes is $2.99! I really liked this thriller and picked it up from a Little Free Library. It has a speculative, science fiction twist, so things definitely get a little weird. It’s also incredibly graphic when it comes to death and violence.

A masterful twist on the serial killer novel from the award-winning author Lauren Beukes: the girl who wouldn’t die hunts the killer who shouldn’t exist.

Harper Curtis is a killer who stepped out of the past. Kirby Mazrachi is the girl who was never meant to have a future. Kirby is the last shining girl, one of the bright young women, burning with potential, whose lives Harper is destined to snuff out after he stumbles on a House in Depression-era Chicago that opens on to other times.

At the urging of the House, Harper inserts himself into the lives of these shining girls, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. He’s the ultimate hunter, vanishing without a trace into another time after each murder — until one of his victims survives.

Determined to bring her would-be killer to justice, Kirby joins the Chicago Sun-Times to work with the reporter, Dan Velasquez, who covered her case. Soon Kirby finds herself closing in on an impossible truth . . .

  1. Lara says:

I read “The Library of the Unwritten” because an author I love (Seanan McGuire) said it was “Law and Order: Bibliophile Crimes Unit meets The Good Place”. Which it 100% is! However, I agree with Carrie in that it’s dark, and the plot is rather tangled. I have the sequel on my to-read list, but have not felt a huge urge to go seek it out yet–I think it’s something you need to be in the mood for.

  2. Darlynne says:

I’ve read both of the Hackwith Library books and thoroughly enjoyed them, definitely a case of being in the right mood. MC Claire is prickly, angry, unbending and, throughout most of the book, not particularly likable. Same for Hero, but Brevity and Ramiel are great. The story, as Lara says above, is dark and tangled. These days, it seems that redemptive arcs work for me; I am willing to see complicated characters change and grow, which is true for both books.

OT: My library just purchased THE EIGHT by Katherine Neville and, oh, do I want to shout about it from the rooftops. Maybe I can lure one of my bookclub friends to go for a completely OTT ride.

  3. Todd says:

Oh, I read The Eight years ago and enjoyed it – it helped make me a fan of hers. I loaned it to my boss’s teenage daughter when they went to Europe for two weeks and he was grateful that it kept her occupied for the entire trip (yes, it’s long).

  4. JJ says:

I believe the Courtney Milan novel has a new epilogue. If you subscribe to the author’s newsletter you can access that epilogue if you’ve already purchased the book.

  5. Susan/DC says:

My niece gave me “The Library of the Unwritten”. I liked it and graded it a bit higher than Carrie did, somewhere in the B range. The characters were engaging, the plot clever, and there were visions of Claire’s life that were touching. However, I was mystified as to why the Library was in Hell rather than in some neutral area between Heaven and Hell. The only reason I could think of for its placement (there may have been an explanation in the book that I just totally missed) was that leaving a novel unfinished is an author’s idea of hell.
