Lake Silence
Lake Silence by Anne Bishop is $2.99! I’m unsure if this is a limited time sale leftover from yesterday. According to Amazon this is book one in a spin-off from Bishop’s The Others series. I’m sure some knowledge would be helpful here, but would love some comments below if you’ve read it!
In this thrilling and suspenseful fantasy, set in the world of the New York Times bestselling Others series, Vicki DeVine and her lodger, the shapeshifter Aggie Crowe, stumble onto a dead body . . . and find themselves enmeshed in danger and dark secrets.
Human laws do not apply in the territory controlled by the Others–vampires, shapeshifters, and paranormal beings even more deadly. And this is a fact that humans should never, ever forget . . .
After her divorce, Vicki DeVine took over a rustic resort near Lake Silence, in a human town that is not human controlled. Towns like Vicki’s have no distance from the Others, the dominant predators that rule most of the land and all of the water throughout the world. And when a place has no boundaries, you never really know what’s out there watching you.
Vicki was hoping to find a new career and a new life. But when her lodger, Aggie Crowe–one of the shapeshifting Others–discovers a dead body, Vicki finds trouble instead. The detectives want to pin the man’s death on her, despite the evidence that nothing human could have killed the victim. As Vicki and her friends search for answers, things get dangerous–and it’ll take everything they have to stay alive.

The Sun Down Motel
RECOMMENDED: The Sun Down Motel by Simone St. James is $2.99 and a Kindle Daily Deal! Elyse loved this one and gave it an A:
I love a good scary mystery, and The Sun Down Motel had all the elements to make it perfect. I loved the Gothic atmosphere, the theme of women coming together to get justice for other women, and the excellent momentum of the pacing. Other than possibly being too spooky for some, I can’t come up with a single reason why anyone should avoid this book.
Something hasn’t been right at the roadside Sun Down Motel for a very long time, and Carly Kirk is about to find out why in this chilling new novel from the USA Today bestselling and award-winning author of The Broken Girls.
Upstate New York, 1982. Viv Delaney wants to move to New York City, and to help pay for it she takes a job as the night clerk at the Sun Down Motel in Fell, New York. But something isnʼt right at the motel, something haunting and scary.
Upstate New York, 2017. Carly Kirk has never been able to let go of the story of her aunt Viv, who mysteriously disappeared from the Sun Down before she was born. The Book of Koli
RECOMMENDED: The Book of Koli by M.R. Carey is $2.99! This is the first book in a new trilogy and part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals, which also includes some romance. Carrie read this one and had this to say on a previous Hide Your Wallet:
Character driven and imaginative. Will never regard a tree in the same way again.
Beyond the walls of the small village of Mythen Rood lies an unrecognizable world. A world where overgrown forests are filled with choker trees and deadly vines and seeds that will kill you where you stand. And if they don’t get you, one of the dangerous shunned men will.
Koli has lived in Mythen Rood his entire life. He knows the first rule of survival is that you don’t venture beyond the walls.
What he doesn’t know is – what happens when you aren’t given a choice?
The first in a gripping new trilogy, The Book of Koli charts the journey of one unforgettable young boy struggling to find his place in a chilling post-apocalyptic world. Perfect for readers of Station Eleven and Annihilation.

Royal Holiday
RECOMMENDED: Royal Holiday by Jasmine Guillory is $2.99! This is part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals. Maya loved this one and gave it an A:
In the end, this story is overwhelmingly about saying yes to good things put directly in your path. If all you want to do is wrap yourself up in a Christmas love story with two adults just admirably adulting all the way through the book, I say grab a Christmas sweater and a hot chocolate, and get ready to have a stranger ask you why you look so happy reading the book you have in your hand!
From the New York Times bestselling author of The Proposal and “rising star in the romance genre” (Entertainment Weekly) comes a dazzling new novel about a spontaneous holiday vacation that turns into an unforgettable romance.
Vivian Forest has been out of the country a grand total of one time, so when she gets the chance to tag along on her daughter Maddie’s work trip to England to style a royal family member, she can’t refuse. She’s excited to spend the holidays taking in the magnificent British sights, but what she doesn’t expect is to become instantly attracted to a certain private secretary, his charming accent, and unyielding formality.
Malcolm Hudson has worked for the Queen for years and has never given a personal, private tour—until now. He is intrigued by Vivian the moment he meets her and finds himself making excuses just to spend time with her. When flirtatious banter turns into a kiss under the mistletoe, things snowball into a full-on fling.
Despite a ticking timer on their holiday romance, they are completely fine with ending their short, steamy affair come New Year’s Day. . .or are they?

Liane Moriarty’s THE HUSBAND’S SECRET is a $2.99 KDD today. It’s not a romance and it’s undoubtedly been overshadowed by Moriarty’s later work (like BIG LITTLE LIES), but THE HUSBAND’S SECRET—which is all about the consequences of a woman reading a letter that was meant to be read only after her husband’s death—was one of my favorite (non-romance) books the year it was published.
REDEMPTION IN INDIGO by Karen Lord is $1.99. That and the St. James noted above have been on my wish list for ages.
THE SUN-DOWN MOTEL and BOOK OF KOLI (and the other two books in the trilogy) were amazing can-put-it-down reads for me!
The Others spin offs have been stand alone taking place in other parts of the world. We’ve met a few of the characters in the original series. I felt this one was a little underwhelming compared to the original books. It lacked the balance of humor to pathos, the banal to horror that they excelled at. The next book, Wild Country totally rocked. I believe the way I put it in review was that I didn’t have much interest in revisiting the lake, but would be happy to spend a lot more time out in the very wild west.
I loved Lake Silence, although it is a bit of an adjustment from the original series. I think the Crows are always fun, and side character Ilya from the main series is a joy in this one. It leans a little heavier to the suspense side, and readers may want to know heading in that the main character escaped from domestic emotional abuse and while there’s lots of support offered to her in her new home, she’s still in the process of healing.
Another big yes for THE SUN DOWN MOTEL. (May be time for a reread!)
Like @DonnaMarie, I was initially underwhelmed by Lake Silence. In fact, the story initially struck me as rather silly; however, with subsequent re-reads, it has grown on me. My husband also liked it and something from the book has entered our family lexicon, so bonus points there.
@DonnaMarie and @Malaraa, the next Anne Bishop book, due out in March 2022, Crowbones, is set at Lake Silence.
Oh I loved Lake Silence. I thought it did what spin offs should do. Have enough hold over familiarity with the world it spun off from, but different enough so it is its own story and vibe. Also I was tickled by the Others’ version of the Clue board game. The stakes are so much higher in their version.
I’m glad Anne Bishop is writing the Others again. I bought the first new Black Jewels book and didn’t even finish it.
But I love the Others world and the characters in it. It’s hard to wait ’til next year tho’. 🙁
