  • A Duke in Disguise

A Duke in Disguise by Cat Sebastian

RECOMMENDEDA Duke In Disguise by Cat Sebastian is 99c! This is part of the Regency Imposters series. Ellen reviewed this one and gave it an A-:

I have a hard time imagining any romance novel reader who wouldn’t appreciate and enjoy this book for one or more or many reasons.

    One reluctant heir

If anyone else had asked for his help publishing a naughty novel, Ash would have had the sense to say no. But he’s never been able to deny Verity Plum. Now he has his hands full illustrating a book and trying his damnedest not to fall in love with his best friend. The last thing he needs is to discover he’s a duke’s lost heir. Without a family or a proper education, he’s had to fight for his place in the world, and the idea of it—and Verity—being taken away from him chills him to the bone.

    One radical bookseller

All Verity wants is to keep her brother out of prison, her business afloat, and her hands off Ash. Lately it seems she’s not getting anything she wants. She knows from bitter experience that she isn’t cut out for romance, but the more time she spends with Ash, the more she wonders if maybe she’s been wrong about herself.

    One disaster waiting to happen

Ash has a month before his identity is exposed, and he plans to spend it with Verity. As they explore their long-buried passion, it becomes harder for Ash to face the music. Can Verity accept who Ash must become or will he turn away the only woman he’s ever loved?

  • The Project

    The Project by Courtney Summers

The Project by Courtney Summers is $2.99! Elyse mentioned this in a previous Hide Your Wallet and I was a fan of Summers’ first book, Sadie. This is a YA horror/thriller and it needs all the content warnings. Feel free to check Goodreads or Storygraph specifics. There’s also a page for it on The Trigger Warning Database, but keep in mind all of these things are subject to human error.

Lo Denham is used to being on her own. After her parents died, Lo’s sister, Bea, joined The Unity Project, leaving Lo in the care of their great aunt. Thanks to its extensive charitable work and community outreach, The Unity Project has won the hearts and minds of most in the Upstate New York region, but Lo knows there’s more to the group than meets the eye. She’s spent the last six years of her life trying—and failing—to prove it.

When a man shows up at the magazine Lo works for claiming The Unity Project killed his son, Lo sees the perfect opportunity to expose the group and reunite with Bea once and for all. When her investigation puts her in the direct path of its leader, Lev Warren and as Lo delves deeper into The Project, the lives of its members it upends everything she thought she knew about her sister, herself, cults, and the world around her—to the point she can no longer tell what’s real or true. Lo never thought she could afford to believe in Lev Warren . . . but now she doesn’t know if she can afford not to.

  • A Raven’s Heart

    A Raven’s Heart by K.C. Bateman

A Raven’s Heart by K.C. Bateman is FREE! This is the second book in the Secrets & Spies series. We’ve featured the first book on sale previously and it’s available for $2.99! This one has a bookish code breaker heroine, a spy hero, and a second chance romance. Hello, catnip!

August 1815. The war with France is officially over, Napoleon’s an exile on St Helena, but Europe is still a very dangerous place to be.

Kidnapped and held for ransom at nineteen, ducal heir William Ravenwood knows the only person he can rely on is himself. Now part of a spy ring that includes his friends Nicolas and Richard Hampden, he’s the smuggler known as The Raven, a ruthless agent who specializes in rescuing hostages and prisoners of war from captivity.

Raven longs to discover the fate of his colleague, Christopher ‘Kit’ Carlisle, who’s been missing, presumed dead, for over two years. He’s also equally determined to stay away from the one thing he knows is dangerous to his health – the bane of his life, his best friends’ infuriating and provocative little sister, Heloise.

Heloise is a brilliant code breaker, one of the English government’s most valuable assets. She’s also loved Raven for years, but considering that he rejected her at sixteen, before her face was scarred rescuing her brother from an icy river, she’s certain he doesn’t want her now, despite his outrageous flirting.

But when Heloise decodes a message that proves Kit is alive and a prisoner in Spain, Raven realizes she’s in grave danger. With French agents determined to silence her, he’ll do whatever it takes to keep her safe – even if that means taking her to Spain with him as an unwilling hostage.

As they face French deserters and Spanish freedom fighters, Raven and Heloise try to ignore the simmering attraction that’s been building between them for eight long years. The differences between them are striking but they’ve always had a strange underlying bond. Heloise might be scarred outwardly, but Raven’s wounds are all on the inside. He knows he’s not worthy of her love—a shadowed Hades pining for sun-kissed Persephone—but he’s not above showing her passion for the short time they’re together.

A master at decoding complex messages, Heloise finds Raven frustratingly hard to read, but as their lives hang in the balance she’s determined to unravel his secrets and unlock his dark, elusive heart…

  • Poison Study

Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder

Poison Study by Maria V. Snyder is $1.99! It seems the book had another cover change. I’m eh on it. Lara wrote a Keeper Shelf review for this one and I agree with everything!

    Choose: A quick death…Or slow poison…

About to be executed for murder, Yelena is offered an extraordinary reprieve. She’ll eat the best meals, have rooms in the palace—and risk assassination by anyone trying to kill the Commander of Ixia.

And so Yelena chooses to become a food taster. But the chief of security, leaving nothing to chance, deliberately feeds her Butterfly’s Dust—and only by appearing for her daily antidote will she delay an agonizing death from the poison.

As Yelena tries to escape her new dilemma, disasters keep mounting. Rebels plot to seize Ixia and Yelena develops magical powers she can’t control. Her life is threatened again and choices must be made. But this time the outcomes aren’t so clear…

  1. DiscoDollyDeb says:

Erica Jong’s 1973 classic, FEAR OF FLYING, is a KDD for $2.99 today. Although viewed now as little more than a time capsule, FEAR OF FLYING was a key book in the 1970s evolution of women writing about women’s sexual experiences processed through the female gaze. (In DiscoDollyDeb’s teenage canon, MY SECRET GARDEN, FEAR OF FLYING, and SWEET SAVAGE LOVE roll up like trains at a station, one right after the other.) FofF is also memorable for the concept of “the zipless fuck” (I see the new cover does feature a zipper) which later evolved into Romancelandia’s “insta-love/lust.” Highly recommended for you young whippersnappers who might be interested in what your mothers and grandmothers were reading back in the day.

  2. FashionablyEvil says:

Love, love, LOVE Cat Sebastian’s Regency Imposters series. They are all a total delight and, as a result, I’ve now read her entire backlist.

  3. Lisa F says:

That CS is worth a million times its 99 cent price tag. Grab it if you don’t have it!

  4. Carrie G says:

I really enjoyed the entire Secrets and Spies trilogy by K.C. Bateman, and especially the first two. Recommended.

  5. Annie Kate says:

Ugh, I hated A Raven’s Heart. The hero spends most of the book being a flat-out jackass to the heroine because he’s got a boner and hates it, which is the most tiring reason to be a jackass, and despite his obvious trashcan nature, the heroine is still in love with him, because reasons. Neither the plot or the romance made any sense.

I’ve really liked Bateman’s writing as Kate Bateman, so the size of this miss was a surprise to me.

  6. AtasB says:

I really really enjoyed A Duke In Disguise, and I def want to read more in that series. Appreciate it being recced here, I’m sure that’s why I picked it up!

  7. Escapeologist says:

K.J. Charles sale alert – the Sugared Game and Subtle Blood are both $3.99 on kindle. (Will Darling books 2 and 3)

  8. Susan/DC says:

@DDD: Another aspect of Jong’s book was that it portrayed a world where women could enjoy sex for itself, it didn’t always have to come wrapped up in bows and and end in wedding proposals.

  9. Kareni says:

Poison Study is a book I’ve reread several times!

  10. I_Simon says:

I was a big fan of Courtney Summers’ previous book, Sadie, so I was really looking forward to The Project but it ended up being a deeply frustrating read for me. The story follows one sister trying to find out what happened to her beloved older sister after she falls in with a NXIVM style cult and cuts off contact with her family but so many of the decisions the character makes seem to be based around what will make the story more shocking instead of what seems logical or realistic for the character. Also, I know the book is YA but the work situation of the teenage protagonist strained credulity and made me feel like an old lady because I just kept thinking that’s not how any of that would actually work.

  11. Jennifer says:

Poison Study is her best book. The next two books were a little less good but still good. But the books featuring Opal just turned me off on the author entirely, giant DNR. I can’t be into the author any more after reading that, sadly.
