Every now and again I’ve had to test different database settings by requesting comment threads, and in my last one, a few of you asked if these “Hayadoin” posts could be regular features. I love this idea, especially since you help form one of the most welcoming and thoughtful communities online, and I love reading what you have to say.
So, hayadoin? What are you looking forward to this weekend, or this month?
As for me, June is my birthday month, and the end of school and the start of summer, and once the cicadas stop dive-bombing me (or trying to craw up the back of my neck ew ew ew omg ew) I am looking forward to being outside in the sun, reading and sitting and possibly snacking.
I’m also pondering what outlandish dessert I’d like for my birthday. Last year was baked Alaska with homemade mint-chip ice cream and an absolutely mammoth pile of meringue on top (plus a blowtorch). I have to think big and delicious. Any suggestions?
What about you? Anything you’re anticipating happily this month? Please tell us about it!

I’m going to the beach for a couple of days tomorrow (can’t wait!)! Next weekend I’ll be heading to a very dear college friend’s wedding, where I will be staying with a different very dear college friend & her fiancé. I’m so looking forward to summer and outdoor activities!!
Going to Mackinac Island then home, then Hilton Head. Haven’t been on a vacation in years! Tha day before last planned vacation, I broke out in shingles, then broke my ankle, then pandemic. Bad breaks. Looking forward to good ones.
Had a lovely dinner with some family and it was good to catch up. Father’s Day weekend I am traveling to Maryland to see my 3 month old niece along with my parents and brother, where we will also celebrate my parents’ anniversary.
I was looking forward to driving to Canberra to catch up with our eldest son next weekend, but that won’t be happening as Melbourne is back in lockdown. Now I am looking forward to seeing our other boys and our grandchildren who live in Melbourne, hopefully at the end of the week.
I lost one of my best friends to cancer last month, which brings back memories of my mother who died at the same age and cause in 1992. Self-determination was very important to my friend, in life and in death. I am so glad that she did her thing and lived to the fullest, and also I miss her so much and am devastated for the man she leaves behind. It makes me want to live a good life, be with those I love, do work I love… This life is short and you never know how long you have. Enjoy it to the brim.
I love this idea! This month, I’m looking forward to the Mid-Atlantic Fiber Association’s 4-day, online conference. MAFA is for all the fiber arts, but tends to focus mostly on weaving and spinning. I’m not a weaver, but I do spin, and I’ve signed up for SEVEN two-hour classes to try to improve and broaden my skills.
I also hope to start planning a trip out West to see our Robin and both sets of my parents, later this summer. We’re all vaccinated, so it’s just a matter of working out when and whether my husband can take time off, where to stay, and how to get there, since we don’t really want to brave airports and planes yet.
@Christa, my sympathies on the death of your friend.
I’m with Alli and looking to unfuck my house as soon as the school year ends (10 day!!!) God, is it a mess. And I’ve got into a HORRIBLE habit of borrowing books (paper books) from the library that I never have time to read, so I’m going to try hard to read at least one before I have to return it. One of my daughters has a June birthday as well, but she’s across the country, so we’ll have to make due with a phone call, and maybe, if she’s feeling unusually generous, a Facetime. Happy Birthday, Sarah!!
NYT also sent this strawberry and cream layer cake in the newsletter this weekend. I don’t think I could wait until my birthday, though!

@Christa: My heart aches for you and your friend’s partner, she sounds like a lovely friend. And a reminder to do our thing and enjoy it to the brim. This is our shot.
@Christa, my deepest sympathies to you and your friend’s SO. I too lost my dearest friend and sister of my heart to cancer recently so that wound is very familiar to me.
Just put in my garden and am looking forward to all the fresh fruits and vegies and herbs. Also learning more about this vegan diet I will need to be on for the rest of my life. Anybody got any good recipes, please pass ’em on! This has been a rough transition for a foodie coming from Italian and Rusyn stock and very dependent on pasta, cheese and potatos.
Sending kindness to you all and sharing your joys and sorrows. I was able to start back to library work – safely from home on computer – for the first time in 15 months. It is a delight to be enabling book addictions and helping people to put holds on *all* the things. So far only one sexist doofus call – really likes this female author of historical non-fiction, she’s so good, doesn’t write like a woman. omgwtfbbq smh
My mother got her second shot yesterday, my kids have their first shot, and my second shot is impending. We’ll be able to visit her soooon and I am very grateful. She turns 80 this year which is mind-boggling. She doesn’t act her age and I follow that example 🙂
We celebrated my spouse’s birthday this weekend and restrictions here eased to allow up to 10 people for outdoor gatherings (indoor is still banned). So we gathered with family for a distanced, no hugs bbq that was still really nice because PEOPLE.
I’m going to see my best friend on the 25th. I was planning to go last year in March or April, but then the pandemic happened.
I’m looking forward to reading the next KJ Charles later this month when it comes out. Also going to a writing retreat. IN PERSON. With actual contact with friends not through a computer screen! (All vaccinated.) We did last June’s virtually, and it worked out so well that we did another virtual retreat in January, but I’m still really excited about getting back in person.
@kathry! 58th whoa! How cool! I can’t wait for my 58th anniversary! Wishing both of you a bubbling, frothing, joyous day and an even more deeper and broader relationship in the years to come!
My condolences for those who have lost someone this past year.
I’m finding it a challenge to go outside without a mask, so I’m easing into it. In-office work starts this month, with a suggested (we really want to make this mandatory but won’t) two days a week (working up to full-time in September). Most of my friends are still work from home until September, but it is [kinda?] fun to go back for a few days and see my co-workers.
WFH won’t matter to me for long, though: I’m retiring on June 30th, at the end of a huge work project, so my nose (and the rest of me) is on the grindstone this month to get this over the finish line. Went out to brunch (on the restaurant’s beautiful patio) for my mother’s 85th birthday this past weekend, and in my free time I’m trying to decide what I’m going to do on July 1 (besides sleep – all the sleep!) – Camp NaNoWriMo starts then, so I need to figure out something to write about. Unfucking the house is on the list starting in September when it won’t be so hot!
A group of kids were learning how to skateboard in our cul-de-sac this weekend and it looked like so much fun! It may be time to pick up something new (not skateboarding) and shake out the cobwebs from the past year/decade.
@DiscoDollyDeb: aaaa, that explains it. Thanks for the heads up! I admit I pay attention to months with lots of Tuesdays (extra pay!) but I don’t track the Saturdays >.>
