  • The Flatshare

    The Flatshare by Beth O'Leary

RECOMMENDThe Flatshare by Beth O’Leary is $2.99! We had a great guest review of this one and Lisa the Librarian gave it an A-:

It was romantic, sweet, hot, funny, and original – everything I’m looking for in a romance. I can definitely see myself rereading this in the not-too-distant future.

Tiffy and Leon share an apartment. Tiffy and Leon have never met.

After a bad breakup, Tiffy Moore needs a place to live. Fast. And cheap. But the apartments in her budget have her wondering if astonishingly colored mold on the walls counts as art.

Desperation makes her open minded, so she answers an ad for a flatshare. Leon, a night shift worker, will take the apartment during the day, and Tiffy can have it nights and weekends. He’ll only ever be there when she’s at the office. In fact, they’ll never even have to meet.

Tiffy and Leon start writing each other notes – first about what day is garbage day, and politely establishing what leftovers are up for grabs, and the evergreen question of whether the toilet seat should stay up or down. Even though they are opposites, they soon become friends. And then maybe more.

But falling in love with your roommate is probably a terrible idea…especially if you’ve never met.

What if your roommate is your soul mate? A joyful, quirky romantic comedy, Beth O’Leary’s The Flatshare is a feel-good novel about finding love in the most unexpected of ways.

  • Mr. Malcolm’s List

Mr. Malcolm’s List by Suzanne Allain

Mr. Malcolm’s List by Suzanne Allain is $1.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal, which also features some cookbooks and more romance. This romance made a lot of “Best of” lists but I’ve heard little about it. I believe it’s slated for a movie adaptation.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that an arrogant bachelor insistent on a wife who meets the strictest of requirements–deserves his comeuppance.

The Honourable Mr. Jeremy Malcolm is searching for a wife, but not just any wife. As the target of matchmaking mothers and desperate debutantes, he’s determined to avoid the fortune hunters and find a near-perfect woman, one who will meet the qualifications on his well-crafted list. But after years of searching, he’s beginning to despair of ever finding this paragon. Until Selina Dalton arrives in town.

Selina, a vicar’s daughter of limited means and a stranger to high society, is thrilled when her friend Julia Thistlewaite invites her to London, until she learns it’s all part of a plot to exact revenge on Mr. Malcolm. Selina is reluctant to participate in Julia’s scheme, especially after meeting the irresistible Mr. Malcolm, who appears to be very different from the arrogant scoundrel of Julia’s description.

But when Mr. Malcolm begins judging Selina against his unattainable standards, Selina decides that she has some qualifications of her own. And if he is to meet them he must reveal the real man behind…Mr. Malcolm’s List.

  • Sky in the Deep

Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young

Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young is $2.99! This is historical YA fantasy with vikings. It was picked for a previous Hide Your Wallet and discussed on an edition of Cover Awe. It’s a bit slow to start, but as a whole, I enjoy Young’s one-off YA titles.

A 2018 Most Anticipated Young Adult book that is part Wonder Woman, part Vikings—and all heart.

    OND ELDR. BREATHE FIRE.

Raised to be a warrior, seventeen-year-old Eelyn fights alongside her Aska clansmen in an ancient, rivalry against the Riki clan. Her life is brutal but simple: fight and survive. Until the day she sees the impossible on the battlefield—her brother, fighting with the enemy—the brother she watched die five years ago.

Faced with her brother’s betrayal, she must survive the winter in the mountains with the Riki, in a village where every neighbor is an enemy, every battle scar possibly one she delivered. But when the Riki village is raided by a ruthless clan thought to be a legend, Eelyn is even more desperate to get back to her beloved family.

She is given no choice but to trust Fiske, her brother’s friend, who sees her as a threat. They must do the impossible: unite the clans to fight together, or risk being slaughtered one by one. Driven by a love for her clan and her growing love for Fiske, Eelyn must confront her own definition of loyalty and family while daring to put her faith in the people she’s spent her life hating.

  • Magic in Manhattan Collection

Magic in Manhattan Collection by Allie Therin

Magic in Manhattan Collection by Allie Therin is $1.99! This is another Kindle Daily Deal and collections books 1-3 in the series. I think this is the full series, but correct me if I’m wrong.

    Spellbound

Arthur Kenzie’s life’s work is protecting the world from the supernatural relics that could destroy it. When an amulet with the power to control the tides is shipped to New York, he must intercept it before it can be used to devastating effects. This time, in order to succeed, he needs a powerful psychometric…and the only one available has sworn off his abilities altogether.

Rory Brodigan’s gift comes with great risk. To protect himself, he’s become a recluse, redirecting his magic to find counterfeit antiques. But with the city’s fate hanging in the balance, he can’t force himself to say no.

As Arthur coaxes him out of seclusion, a magical and emotional bond begins to form. One that proves impossible to break—even when Arthur sacrifices himself to keep Rory safe and Rory must risk everything to save him.

    Starcrossed

Arthur’s continued quest to contain supernatural relics that pose a threat to the world  captured Rory’s imagination—and his heart. Butwhen a group of ruthless paranormals throw the city into chaos, the two men’s strained relationship leaves Rory vulnerable to a monster from Arthur’s past.

With dark forces determined to tear them apart, Rory and Arthur will have to draw on every last bit of magic up their sleeves. And in the end, it’s the connection they’ve formed without magic that will be tested like never before.

    Wonderstruck

Arthur’s search to to destroy the powerful supernatural relic that threatens Manhattan has been fruitless . All it has done is keep him from the man he loves. But he’ll do anything to keep Rory safe and free, even if that means leaving him behind.

Rory is  determined to gain power over his own magic. He can take care of himself—and maybe even Arthur, too, if Arthur will let him. An auction at the Paris world’s fair offers the perfect opportunity to destroy the relic, if a group of power-hungry supernaturals don’t destroy Rory and Arthur first.

As the magical world converges on Paris, Arthur and Rory have to decide who they can trust. Guessing wrong could spell destruction for their bond—and for the world as they know it.

I just finished reading the Magic in Manhattan trilogy and really liked it. Would happily read more set in that world/featuring this found family of characters.

  2. Lisa F says:

Some solid picks here; get The Flatshare if you don’t have it is my rec.

  3. G. says:

I’m having a hard time with contemporary romance this year, but Flatshare was an exception. Just a genuinely lovely book, even if it requires some suspension of disbelief in regards to the living situation.

The Allie Therin bundle… *grabby hands* Except not in my neck of the woods *weeps* I have not seen a Carina Press in my region ever.

Oh well. I guess it’s gonna be Mr. Malcolm’s List for me.

  4. Heather C says:

Super excited for the Magic in Manhattan deal. My library only had the first book and I have been checking their site for an update every two weeks for months.

  5. Annie Kate says:

Oh man, I loved The Flatshare. It’s a very kind, empathetic book, and it was just what I needed the first time I picked it up. Warning that the book deals with recovery from an emotionally abusive relationship, and while it’s handled very well, I do know someone who found it triggering, so heads up because that’s not obvious from the blurb.

Jumping on that Magic in Manhattan box set immediately. I also want more of that universe, and more historical paranormals, and more queer paranormals…just more of this, please.

    Mr Malcom’s List is delightful!

  7. Lisa says:

I haven’t read Mr. Malcolm’s list yet, but the “teaser trailer” for the movie adaptation is truly delightful. I’m not sure if the link will work, but if you search “Mr Malcolm’s List and Refinery29” you should get it. https://m.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3D5WIcqyHDuIg&ved=2ahUKEwiI_eKjnInxAhUSIjQIHbgaD9IQtwIwHHoECC4QAg&usg=AOvVaw1ezYyO95x2a2QwJ6wLl-36

  8. Karen D says:

I just listened to the audiobook of Mr. Malcolm’s List on a road trip. The narrator is quite delightful. It’s definitely a Regency romp and I enjoyed it for the most part. There really isn’t anything new in it (neither characters nor plot) but it was a good way to pass the time. My one complaint is that the end seemed to drag on a little too long.

  9. Arijo says:

There’s the beginning of Mr. Malcom’s List first chapter on Amazon, you can read it to see if it’s your style. I did, and no thanks. The writing seems clunky… and doesn’t the 3 characters we meet sound like tools? (I will be all over the movie though. The synopsis reminds me of John Tucker Must Die.)
