Single Dads, a Free Paranormal Romance, & More

  • Love in the Afternoon

Love in the Afternoon by Lisa Kleypas

Love in the Afternoon by Lisa Kleypas is $2.99! This historical romance has a Cyrano de Bergerac feel to it and can be read on its own. Some readers found this one forgettable when compared to other Kleypas romances, while others said this one has their favorite hero or heroine of all time.

    She harbors a secret yearning.

As a lover of animals and nature, Beatrix Hathaway has always been more comfortable outdoors than in the ballroom. Even though she participated in the London season in the past, the classic beauty and free-spirited Beatrix has never been swept away or seriously courted… and she has resigned herself to the fate of never finding love. Has the time come for the most unconventional of the Hathaway sisters to settle for an ordinary man—just to avoid spinsterhood?

    He is a world-weary cynic.

Captain Christopher Phelan is a handsome, daring soldier who plans to marry Beatrix’s friend, the vivacious flirt Prudence Mercer, when he returns from fighting abroad. But, as he explains in his letters to Pru, life on the battlefield has darkened his soul—and it’s becoming clear that Christopher won’t come back as the same man. When Beatrix learns of Pru’s disappointment, she decides to help by concocting Pru’s letters to Christopher for her. Soon the correspondence between Beatrix and Christopher develops into something fulfilling and deep… and when Christopher comes home, he’s determined to claim the woman he loves. What began as Beatrix’s innocent deception has resulted in the agony of unfulfilled love—and a passion that can’t be denied.

  • Learned Behaviors

    Learned Behaviors by Jayce Ellis

Learned Behaviors by Jayce Ellis is $1.99! This is a contemporary romance between two single, workaholic dads who don’t exactly get along at the office. It’s also the first in the series, but the second one is also on sale.

Two single dads meet at the office where it’s hate at first sight in this new series from acclaimed author Jayce Ellis.

Sending his daughter off to college is the proudest day of single dad JaQuan Reynolds’ life. Everything took a back seat to raising her—including his career. He has no idea what comes next, but his newfound freedom is quickly curtailed by a crash deadline at work and the uptight, hovering presence of consultant Matthew Donaldson. He’s surly and insufferably sexy, and Jaq’s ready to check him out and write him off—right up until a work assignment forces them together.

Every day. From now until Thanksgiving.

Work and fatherhood have been Matt’s whole world for years now, ever since his marriage ended. His eldest son is getting hitched over Thanksgiving weekend, and he’s not going to let a work deadline get in the way of celebrating with his family—not this time. The hours aren’t a problem, but the executive assistant on the project might be. Jaq’s sexy voice makes Matt yearn for things he let go of a long time ago.

Lust isn’t on the schedule, and neither is longing. But as the weeks go by, Matt and Jaq are forced to reevaluate their plans…and discover that even the most tight-knit of families can make room for one more.

  • Unfathomed

    Unfathomed by Anna Hackett

Unfathomed by Anna Hackett is $1.99! This has been mentioned on a previous Book Beat and in our comments section. I’m super into this pairing of a bodyguard heroine and a scientist hero. This is the fourth book in this particular series, but the first book is free and the rest are at a great price.

Finding undiscovered treasures is always daring, dangerous, and deadly. Perfect for the men and women of Treasure Hunter Security.

Long, tall, and deadly Morgan Kincaid enjoys her job at Treasure Hunter Security. Raised by a tough Marine father, she loves her guns and knives, and never backs down from a fight. She’s yet to find a man who can keep up with her and after a string of first dates, she’s not feeling hopeful. Assigned to an underwater archeological expedition on the trail of a long-lost shipwreck, Morgan finds herself protecting the very hard, delicious body of a certain globe-trotting archeologist. A smart rogue with a wide smile and a boat-load of charm.

Dr. Zachariah James has information leading to a shipwreck filled with history and treasure. After growing up with nothing, he’s forged a stellar career for himself, but history is more than just a job, it’s his lifeblood. So Zach is amazed to find himself as excited by a woman as he is by his dive. Dangerous Morgan fascinates him, and he’s eager to see what she’s hiding under her tough exterior.

As they dive the azure waters off the coast of Madagascar, they uncover a sizzling attraction and clues to an impossible artifact, but soon they are under attack by dangerous black-market thieves. Among traitors, kidnappings, and ancient temples, Zach and Morgan will need to put everything on the line to have any chance at surviving.

Note to readers: This action-adventure romance contains a lot of action (think lost temples and exciting dives), cool offsiders (sexy former Navy SEALs) and a steamy romance (lots of sexy times between a tough female security expert and a sexy archeologist). This is treasure hunting Navy SEAL style. So if you like it fast, and fun, and sexy, this is for you!

  • Magnolia Mystic

    Magnolia Mystic by Lisa Kessler

Magnolia Mystic by Lisa Kessler is FREE! This paranormal romance is the first in a series and features an immortal pirate hero and a psychic heroine. I am super curious about this one, especially because it has a 4-star rating on Goodreads. Have you read this one?

Skye Olson is a psychic like her mother, and her grandmother before her, but a bad break up with the man she thought was her soulmate has left her confidence in her abilities shaken. While she’s in crisis, a real estate tycoon from Atlanta swoops in with his eyes on her shop.

Colton Hayes spent his mortal life plundering royal ships with his pirate crew, but one holy relic changed everything. Now he and the rest of the crew protect the port of Savannah from their captain who traded his cutlass for a fountain pen.

When Colton discovers the captain wants to build a hotel in the heart of historic Savannah, he sets out to stop him, but nothing could prepare him for the sexy smile and violet eyes of the Magnolia Mystic.

I am here for a) grown-ups having grown-up, real-world problems; and b) own-voices diverse romance, so the Ellis and its companion book are now in my overstuffed Kindle. Excited to try this new-to-me author. 🙂

    Maybe a tough interior?

@Jcp: Good heavens, that’s a lot of books. There are a couple of Jackie Lau and Jeannie Lin books, but I will need my miner’s helmet to investigate the rest. Thanks!

If you are into audiobooks and have an Audible membership they are having a great sale. I had previously pre-ordered Nalini Singh’s Last Guard for $14.99. I canceled the pre-order today and did q new pre-order for $10.50. A great deal for an audiobook. Most titles are on sale.

@Jcp: Thanks for the heads-up. I just downloaded four books I’ve been wanting to read.

Absolutely LOVE Beatrix in Love in the Afternoon – such a great h! Loves animals (finds them far easier to deal with than people), is capable and empathetic and unconventional and great. Christopher has PTSD and a lot of arrogance but it is no match for Bea. This one ties with Devil in Winter as my favorite Kleypas.

  9. SusanE says:

I’m sorry, but that Unfathomed cover reminds me of a batch of bread dough that has been allowed to rise for too long.

  10. spinster.revival says:

Beatrix Hathaway is amazing and so is her book! I just did a Hathaway quintet comfort reread, and I adore her so much. It’s lovely to see her grow in the previous books, but I think Love in the Afternoon can be read as a standalone (but seriously read the whole series—they’re so good).

Beatrix and Pandora Ravenel from Devil in Spring are two of my favorite heroines ever; they’re truly my kind of delightful weirdos.

  11. JudyW says:

@drewbird. I too loved this particular Kleypas and have read it many times. One of my favorite. The Hathaway series is spectacular.

  12. Maria F says:

Love at First by Kate Clayborn is $2.99 at amazon. This is the latest book by the author of Love Lettering.

  13. MsCellanie says:

“Love in the afternoon” was the CBS Soaps tagline when I was young (I’m dating myself here). I read that line and hear the jingle and the voiceover “On ‘Ryan’s Hope’…”

    is it just me?

  14. Susan says:

Love in the Afternoon is, without a doubt, my favorite Kleypas book. There are a lot of very serious topics covered, but there are also scenes that are amusing and delightful. I like Beatrix and Christopher as a couple and I like the secondary characters (at least the ones readers are supposed to like).

As @spinster.revival noted, it could be read as a standalone, but I think you’d be missing out on some of the richness of the character development and Hathaway family dynamics. Either way, tho, you can’t lose!

  15. Lisa F says:

Jaycee Ellis is so good! I hope folks will take the opportunity to read Learned Behaviors, I liked it a lot.
