  • One Dance with a Duke

One Dance with a Duke by Tessa Dare

One Dance with a Duke by Tessa Dare is $3.99! This is the first book in Dare’s Stud Club trilogy and features a horse breeder hero. Readers say this one is slow to start with, but recommend powering through! There is a marriage of convenience aspect that reviewers really enjoyed.

In One Dance with a Duke—the first novel in Tessa Dare’s delightful new trilogy—secrets and scandals tempt the irresistible rogues of the Stud Club to gamble everything for love.

A handsome and reclusive horse breeder, Spencer Dumarque, the fourth Duke of Morland, is a member of the exclusive Stud Club, an organization so select it has only ten members—yet membership is attainable to anyone with luck. And Spencer has plenty of it, along with an obsession with a prize horse, a dark secret, and, now, a reputation as the dashing “Duke of Midnight.” Each evening he selects one lady for a breathtaking midnight waltz. But none of the women catch his interest, and nobody ever bests the duke—until Lady Amelia d’Orsay tries her luck.

In a moment of desperation, the unconventional beauty claims the duke’s dance and unwittingly steals his heart. When Amelia demands that Spencer forgive her scapegrace brother’s debts, she never imagines that her game of wits and words will lead to breathless passion and a steamy proposal. Still, Spencer is a man of mystery, perhaps connected to the shocking murder of the Stud Club’s founder. Will Amelia lose her heart in this reckless wager or win everlasting love?

  • Forever My Duke

Forever My Duke by Olivia Drake

Forever My Duke by Olivia Drake is $2.99! This is part of the Unlikely Duchesses series, and one of my favorite tropes in historical romance is the brash American heiress. I mentioned this in a previous Hide Your Wallet because the description promised a lot of banter. Did you read it?

“I find Miss Fanshawe to be quite charming—for an American.”—The Prince Regent

Hadrian Ames, the Duke of Clayton, needs a bride. He even has the perfect one picked out. That is, until he meets the lovely, free-spirited Natalie Fanshawe. She’s the opposite of what a man of his high rank should desire in a wife—an outspoken American who has never even set foot in a London ballroom.

But Natalie doesn’t have time to be swept off her feet by a handsome duke who must be a spoiled scoundrel like every other British lord. And she couldn’t care less about Hadrian’s title. After all, it’s not as if he actually worked to attain his wealth and status. He surely can’t understand what it’s like to be a busy woman, planning to open a school while trying to reunite a six-year-old orphan with his English relatives. Nevertheless, Hadrian launches his campaign to win her heart. Can the utterly delightful American beauty ever find a way to love him…despite his being a duke?

  • Heiress for Hire

Heiress for Hire by Madeline Hunter

Heiress for Hire by Madeline Hunter is 99c! This is the first book in a new series for Hunter and Catherine gave it a B-. She felt the mystery element didn’t have the same satisfying resolution as the romance. I liked this one a little better (maybe a B or B+).

In this stunning series debut from New York Times bestselling author Madeline Hunter, a duke’s mysterious bequest brings fortune—and passion—to three young women…

Minerva Hepplewhite has learned the hard way how to take care of herself. When an intruder breaks into her home, she doesn’t swoon or simper. Instead, she wallops the rogue over the head and ties him up—only to realize he is Chase Radnor, the man who nearly got her convicted of her late husband’s murder. Now, he’s insisting that Minerva has inherited a fortune from his uncle, a wealthy Duke. Only one thing could surprise her more: her sudden attraction to this exasperating man…

Chase can’t decide whether Minerva is a wronged woman or a femme fatale. Either way, he’s intrigued. Since the scandal surrounding her husband’s death, she has set up a discreet detective business to rival Chase’s own. She may be the perfect person to help him uncover the truth about his uncle’s demise. But as proximity gives way to mutual seduction, Chase realizes he craves a much deeper alliance…

  • My Fair Lily

My Fair Lily by Meara Platt

My Fair Lily by Meara Platt is 99c! Yes, that is an Old English Sheepdog (or as I like to call them The Little Mermaid dog) on the cover. If you like that breed, definitely check out Rocco Roni on Instagram. Some thought the character development needed some work, but others loved the science-loving, scholarly heroine. It has a 4-star rating on Goodreads.

I see that Becky Chambers’ The Galaxy, and the Ground Within: A Novel (Wayfarers Book 4) is $1.99 for US Kindle readers today. This didn’t work for me though I’ve enjoyed all of Chambers’ other books.

  2. Star says:

FWIW, I think I liked earlier-but-not-earliest Tessa Dare better than I’ve liked more recent Dare. It’s been ages since I actually read early Dare, so unfortunately this is just impressionistic memory, but the more recent Dare feels more intensely trope-tastic and also more anachronistic, while the older stuff felt more unusual and a bit riskier and sort of had less… idk what to call it, less obvious Easter eggs? than the more recent stuff. So if your tastes are similar to mine, you might like her older stuff more, and if your tastes are not like mine, just a heads-up that this book might not be entirely what you’re expecting if you’ve mostly read (and loved) her more recent work.

Kittens and Kisses at the Cat Café: A Furrever Friends Sweet Romance (contemporary) is 99 cents on Amazon US or Amazon UK.

He’s loved her forever. She still sees him as the neighbor kid. Can five desperate kittens bring them together?

The first book in the series is free.

  4. Cori says:

I re-read ‘One Dance with a Duke’ at least once a year. It’s by far my favorite Dare and she’s a one-click for me. I really connected with Amelia and is such a great example of the sunshine/grumpy example.

  5. Lizzy says:

@Star, I really like recent Tessa Dare because it’s absolutely silly fantasy but somehow done well. I agree that her earlier books are more serious. Still well done but much less out and out silly.

  6. Malana says:

@star interesting. I hadn’t found anyone else who felt as I did about Dare books. Her last two were DNFs for me (so shallow and silly) but I have probably re-read all of Spindle Cove at least three times. I’ll check out this one.

  7. LMC says:

I often enjoy the new covers of books (I especially like the new covers for Elisa Braden’s books) but I often get confused as to which book is which since I associate the cover with the book. I do like the new Tessa Dare covers for the Stud Club trilogy.
