Limited Time Deals!

Right now, Amazon is running their Kindle Daily Deals but also seven whole pages of “limited time” deals. They don’t specify for how limited these are, though my guess is that these are in preparation for Prime Day.

  • House of Earth and Blood

House of Earth and Blood by Sarah Maas

House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas is $2.99! We did two podcast episodes with Sarah over the pandemic and honestly, those episodes were so much fun to record. Ellen wrote a fantastic review and gave it a B-:

When I started this book, I was expecting a jam-packed, over-the top fantasy with a lot of snark and heart. And House of Earth and Blood did deliver that, even if there were some missteps in execution. If you’ve enjoyed Maas’ other books, and if you can handle all the violence and slavery and slut-shaming, it’s worth it to push through the awkward beginning and the dragging bits in the middle for big payoff at the end.

#1 New York Times bestselling author Sarah J. Maas launches her brand-new CRESCENT CITY series with House of Earth and Blood: the story of half-Fae and half-human Bryce Quinlan as she seeks revenge in a contemporary fantasy world of magic, danger, and searing romance.

Half-Fae, half-human Bryce Quinlan loves her life. By day, she works for an antiquities dealer, selling barely legal magical artifacts, and by night, she parties with her friends, savoring every pleasure Lunathion—otherwise known as Crescent City— has to offer. But it all comes crumbling down when a ruthless murder shakes the very foundations of the city—and Bryce’s world.

Two years later, her job has become a dead end, and she now seeks only blissful oblivion in the city’s most notorious nightclubs. But when the murderer attacks again, Bryce finds herself dragged into the investigation and paired with an infamous Fallen angel whose own brutal past haunts his every step.

Hunt Athalar, personal assassin for the Archangels, wants nothing to do with Bryce Quinlan, despite being ordered to protect her. She stands for everything he once rebelled against and seems more interested in partying than solving the murder, no matter how close to home it might hit. But Hunt soon realizes there’s far more to Bryce than meets the eye—and that he’s going to have to find a way to work with her if they want to solve this case.

As Bryce and Hunt race to untangle the mystery, they have no way of knowing the threads they tug ripple through the underbelly of the city, across warring continents, and down to the darkest levels of Hel, where things that have been sleeping for millennia are beginning to stir…

With unforgettable characters and page-turning suspense, this richly inventive new fantasy series by #1 New York Times bestselling author Sarah J. Maas delves into the heartache of loss, the price of freedom—and the power of love.

  • Graceling

    Graceling by Kristin Cashore

RECOMMENDED: Graceling by Kristin Cashore is $1.99! This is a YA fantasy novel with romantic elements and I LOVED it. The entire series is pretty great, to be honest. The heroine is strong and all sorts of badass, but she’s also trying to cope with being a hired killer for the king. I’m also totally in love with the cover redesigns for this series.

Katsa has been able to kill a man with her bare hands since she was eight – she’s a Graceling, one of the rare people in her land born with an extreme skill. As niece of the king, she should be able to live a life of privilege, but Graced as she is with killing, she is forced to work as the king’s thug.

When she first meets Prince Po, Graced with combat skills, Katsa has no hint of how her life is about to change.

She never expects to become Po’s friend.

She never expects to learn a new truth about her own Grace – or about a terrible secret that lies hidden far away.

  • Boyfriend Material

    Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall

RECOMMENDED: Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall is $1.99! Carrie reviewed this one and gave it a B+:

I thought this book was lovely. It had real depth. There were characters who made me angry. Sometimes those characters were truly awful people and sometimes they were good people who made mistakes (hello, Luc, you mess). Sometimes the book made me sad. Mostly, it made me swoon and laugh in equal measure – a great stress read!

    Wanted:
    One (fake) boyfriend
    Practically perfect in every way

Luc O’Donnell is tangentially–and reluctantly–famous. His rock star parents split when he was young, and the father he’s never met spent the next twenty years cruising in and out of rehab. Now that his dad’s making a comeback, Luc’s back in the public eye, and one compromising photo is enough to ruin everything.

To clean up his image, Luc has to find a nice, normal relationship…and Oliver Blackwood is as nice and normal as they come. He’s a barrister, an ethical vegetarian, and he’s never inspired a moment of scandal in his life. In other words: perfect boyfriend material. Unfortunately apart from being gay, single, and really, really in need of a date for a big event, Luc and Oliver have nothing in common. So they strike a deal to be publicity-friendly (fake) boyfriends until the dust has settled. Then they can go their separate ways and pretend it never happened.

But the thing about fake-dating is that it can feel a lot like real-dating. And that’s when you get used to someone. Start falling for them. Don’t ever want to let them go.

  • Under the Pendulum Sun

Under the Pendulum Sun by Jeannette Ng

Under the Pendulum Sun by Jeanette Ng is $1.99! What a coincidence as this was mentioned on a previous Whatcha Reading! I was definitely curious about this one. Readers say it has a ton of twists, but it’s a rather dark book. Here’s what reader KateB said about the book:

If JANE EYRE, JONATHAN STRANGE & MR. NORREL, LABYRINTH, and CRIMSON PEAK had a baby and that baby subsisted solely on apocryphal Christian theology and acid, that would be this book.

Victorian missionaries travel into the heart of the newly discovered lands of the Fae, in a stunningly different fantasy that mixes Crimson Peak with Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell.

Catherine Helstone’s brother, Laon, has disappeared in Arcadia, legendary land of the magical fae. Desperate for news of him, she makes the perilous journey, but once there, she finds herself alone and isolated in the sinister house of Gethsemane. At last there comes news: her beloved brother is riding to be reunited with her soon – but the Queen of the Fae and her insane court are hard on his heels.

  1. Ren Benton/Lena Brassard says:

I wished Under the Pendulum Sun was darker and bloodier, actually. I kept waiting for it right to the bitter end, only for the afterword to explain my pro-“heathen” sympathies were never aligned with those of the author. Never assume!

  2. Lostshadows says:

Gave my brother Under the Pendulum Sun for Xmas, iirc, because I thought it looked interesting. His verdict: “I’m not entirely sure what I think.”

  3. Penny says:

I love BOYFRIEND MATERIAL and the audiobook is top notch. I enjoy the romcom movie aesthetics, and I think I just love Alexis Hall’s writing style in general. Highly recommend and seriously can’t wait for the sequel Husband Material next year!

  4. NomadiCat says:

For anyone who uses Audible, the Prime Day deals over there are bordering on EPIC. I’ve been able to finish out my collections of 3 urban fantasy series and pick up a ton of other things on my wishlist.

Some of the most recent release prices, particularly for books in hardcover, are less amazing. But for anything older or novella length you haven’t wanted to spend a full credit on? Go, go, go!

  5. Varian Ross says:

Under The Pendulum Sun looks and sounds amazing…but how much does it lean “missionaries are good, let’s convert everyone”?

  6. Ren Benton/Lena Brassard says:

@Varian Ross: The missionaries are not dissuaded. If you’re looking for The Fae Annihilate Colonialism, it will be a disappointment.

  7. FashionablyEvil says:

Ooh, I LOVED GRACELING. (Made my Best Of List a couple years back.) Katsa was exactly the kind of heroine I needed during the previous administration!

BOYFRIEND MATERIAL made me chortle repeatedly, but there’s also a lot of homophobia in the premise that made me a little uneasy. (Luc is a Bad Gay and the non-profit he works for is losing donors because of it.)

  8. GraceElizabeth says:

What a gorgeous cover for GRACELING! The old ones were very generic – this one is lovely.

  9. Penny says:

@FashionablyEvil I definitely agree that homophobia is part of the storyline, in an integral way. Several of Luc’s friends voice their concern about his work situation leading to the Fake Boyfriend. Luc’s arc includes getting to a place where if he were faced with the same situation he would not agree to perform some version of Good Gay that is acceptable to his employer and the donors of the nonprofit he works for.

  10. Kris Bock says:

Prime day has a 3 months free Kindle Unlimited deal. I was able to get it even though I’ve had KU before.
