  • Radio Silence

    Radio Silence by Alyssa Cole

Radio Silence by Alyssa Cole is $1.99! Carrie reviewed this book in April of 2015. Former reviewer, Redheadedgirl also said, “Based on a rec from Courtney Milan, this is set during an apocalyptic event with a we-all-need-to-work-together and try not to go nutty from the isolation plot – it’s tight, tense, and really good.”

    No one expects the apocalypse.

Arden Highmore was living your average postgrad life in Rochester, New York, when someone flipped the “off” switch on the world. No cell phones, no power, no running water—and no one knows why. All she and her roommate, John, know for sure is that they have to get out, stat. His family’s cabin near the Canadian border seemed like the safest choice.

It turns out isolation doesn’t necessarily equal safety.

When scavengers attack, it’s John’s ridiculously handsome brother, Gabriel, who comes to the rescue. He saves Arden’s life, so he can’t be all bad…but he’s also a controlling jerk who treats her like an idiot. Now their parents are missing and it seems John, Gabriel, their kid sister, Maggie, and Arden are the only people left alive who aren’t bloodthirsty maniacs.

No one knows when—or if—the lights will come back on and, in the midst of all that, Arden and Gabriel are finding that there’s a fine line indeed between love and hate. How long can they expect to last in this terrifying new world, be it together or apart?

  • The Huntress

    The Huntress by Kate Quinn

The Huntress by Kate Quinn is $2.99! I’m a big fan of Quinn’s historical fiction with a dash of mystery and this is one of my favorites, though it’s been a few years since I read it. The main character has dreams of joining WWII’s Night Witches, a group of all-women Nazi-hunting pilots.

From the author of the New York Times and USA Today bestselling novel, THE ALICE NETWORK, comes another fascinating historical novel about a battle-haunted English journalist and a Russian female bomber pilot who join forces to track the Huntress, a Nazi war criminal gone to ground in America.

In the aftermath of war, the hunter becomes the hunted…

Bold and fearless, Nina Markova always dreamed of flying. When the Nazis attack the Soviet Union, she risks everything to join the legendary Night Witches, an all-female night bomber regiment wreaking havoc on the invading Germans. When she is stranded behind enemy lines, Nina becomes the prey of a lethal Nazi murderess known as the Huntress, and only Nina’s bravery and cunning will keep her alive.

Transformed by the horrors he witnessed from Omaha Beach to the Nuremberg Trials, British war correspondent Ian Graham has become a Nazi hunter. Yet one target eludes him: a vicious predator known as the Huntress. To find her, the fierce, disciplined investigator joins forces with the only witness to escape the Huntress alive: the brazen, cocksure Nina. But a shared secret could derail their mission unless Ian and Nina force themselves to confront it.

Growing up in post-war Boston, seventeen-year-old Jordan McBride is determined to become a photographer. When her long-widowed father unexpectedly comes homes with a new fiancée, Jordan is thrilled. But there is something disconcerting about the soft-spoken German widow. Certain that danger is lurking, Jordan begins to delve into her new stepmother’s past—only to discover that there are mysteries buried deep in her family . . . secrets that may threaten all Jordan holds dear.

In this immersive, heart-wrenching story, Kate Quinn illuminates the consequences of war on individual lives, and the price we pay to seek justice and truth.

  • The Happiness Project

The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin

The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin is $2.99 at Amazon! This is a Kindle Daily Deal, and today’s selections feature nine pages of nonfiction. Give them a peek! While Sarah hasn’t read this particular Rubin title, she had this to say about Rubin’s writing in general:

I like Rubin’s research and writing style generally as it’s mostly friendly and engaging.

    #1 New York Times Bestseller

Gretchen Rubin’s year-long experiment to discover how to create true happiness. Drawing on cutting-edge science, classical philosophy, and real-world examples, Rubin delivers an engaging, eminently relatable chronicle of transformation. This special 10th Anniversary edition features a Conversation with Gretchen Rubin, Happiness Project Stories, a guide to creating your own happiness project, a list of dozens of free resources, and more.

“An enlightening, laugh-aloud read. . . . Filled with open, honest glimpses into [Rubin’s] real life, woven together with constant doses of humor.”—Christian Science Monitor

Gretchen Rubin had an epiphany one rainy afternoon in the unlikeliest of places: a city bus. “The days are long, but the years are short,” she realized. “Time is passing, and I’m not focusing enough on the things that really matter.” In that moment, she decided to dedicate a year to her happiness project.

In this lively and compelling account—now updated with new material by the author—Rubin chronicles her adventures during the twelve months she spent test-driving the wisdom of the ages, current scientific research, and lessons from popular culture about how to be happier. Among other things, she found that novelty and challenge are powerful sources of happiness; that money can help buy happiness, when spent wisely; that outer order contributes to inner calm; and that the very smallest of changes can make the biggest difference.

    This updated edition includes:

    ·      An extensive new interview with the author

    ·      Stories of other people’s life-changing happiness projects

    ·     A resource guide to the dozens of free resources created for readers

    ·     The Happiness Project Manifesto

    ·      An excerpt from Gretchen Rubin’s bestselling book The Four Tendencies: The Indispensable Personality Profiles that Reveal How to Make Your Life Better (and Other People’s Lives Better, Too)

  • Secrets & Spies Boxed Set

Secrets & Spies Boxed Set by K.C. Bateman

Secrets & Spies Boxed Set by K.C. Bateman is 99c! We’ve featured a couple of these on sale already on their own and the compiled boxed set came out in January. I’ve enjoyed a lot of Bateman’s historical romances, especially her newer series written under Kate Bateman.

All three of the thrilling Secrets & Spies books in one set!

    TO STEAL A HEART
A master spy and a beautiful thief find love and intrigue in each other’s arms. . .

Forced to do the bidding of a corrupt government minister, Marianne de Bonnard agrees to plant incriminating evidence in the offices of France’s most notorious spymaster. Under cover of night, the tightrope-walking thief puts her skills to good use—until her aerial stunt is foiled when her target appears in the window and, with consummate poise, helps Marianne off the wire and into his lair. The tremors that run through her body are not just from fear; there’s an unwanted frisson of desire there, too. But is it because of her elegant, wickedly handsome host . . . or his proposition?

Nicolas Valette has had plans for his graceful trespasser since he witnessed her unique skills at the Cirque Olympique. Sinuous as a cat, Marianne is perfect for his next mission, but she refuses his generous offer for fear of disobeying her family’s tormenter. When their mutual enemy auctions off her virginity to the highest bidder, Nicolas leaps at the chance to purchase her cooperation. Keeping her will be like trying to tame a wild animal, but what’s life without a little risk? Besides, Nicolas and Marianne both want the same thing: revenge—and, perhaps, something else that’s equally delicious.

    A RAVEN’S HEART
When a bookish codebreaker and a dashing spy are reunited in this steamy historical romance from the author of To Steal a Heart, their lives depend on their ability to resist temptation. But fate is a mistress who cannot be denied. . .

    England, 1815.

In the war against France, Heloise Hampden is a high-value asset to the Crown. When she cracks the enemy’s most recent communication, French agents are sent to silence her. But it’s the agent assigned to protect Heloise who poses the greatest threat to her heart: William de l’Isle, Viscount Ravenwood. Heloise has quarreled with the man they call Raven since childhood, yet always maintained a chaste distance. She’s sure nothing will change, thanks to the disfiguring scar on her face.

Nothing has changed. Raven still wonders how Hell-cat Hampden’s lithe body would feel pressed against his, but for the mission he must remind himself that the woman takes more pleasure in ancient languages than she does in seduction.
His imprisonment six years ago broke him in a way that makes the prospect of love impossible—he’s a shadowed Hades pining for sun-kissed Persephone. Still, his heart beats like mad whenever he’s within ten paces of Heloise, and he’ll do whatever it takes to keep her safe—even if that means taking her to Spain as an unwilling hostage.
Protecting her from danger will be a challenge; protecting her from desire will be pure agony.

    A COUNTERFEIT HEART
A feisty counterfeiter and a cocky British agent clash in this sultry Secrets and Spies novel by K. C. Bateman, whose witty, intelligent, and sexy historical romances have become her signature.

As Sabine de la Tour tosses piles of forged banknotes onto a bonfire in a Paris park, she bids a reluctant farewell to her double life as a notorious criminal. Her counterfeits have destabilized the continent and turned scoundrels into rich men, but now she and her business partner must escape France—or face the guillotine. Her only hope of surviving in England is to strike a deal with the very spy she’s spent her career outrunning.

Richard Hampden, Viscount Lovell, will risk anything to safeguard England from the horrors of the French Revolution, even make a pact with his archenemy: Philippe Lacorte, the greatest counterfeiter in Europe. But when a cheeky, gamine-faced beauty proves herself to be Lacorte, Richard is shocked—and more than a little aroused. Unlike the debutantes who so often hurl themselves at him, this cunning minx offers a unique and irresistible challenge. Richard will help her. But in return, he wants something even Sabine cannot fake.

  1. Laura says:

The Happiness Project changed my life 1000% for the better. I re-read bits of it last year and it helped me all over again.

  2. lorenet says:

Warning — be sure to check your digital content on Amazon before you purchase the Alyssa Cole Off The Grid books. Maybe they have been reissued with new covers, but my search tells me I purchased all 3 in June of 2016. It doesn’t show that I have purchased these books with the new covers.

  3. flchen1 says:

Thank you, @lorenet. I was about to rush over to click but after searching, realize that I have Radio Silence with the older cover also!

  4. batgirl says:

With all respect and congratulations to those who found The Happiness Project a life-changer – I could not get on with it. As with Eat, Pray, Love, it came across to me as a woman already with immense privilege demanding spiritual / emotional fulfilment as her due.
If you are at all dubious about that aspect (Rubin specifically rejects kindness and service as useful approaches to happiness) check out some of the 1 or 2-star reviews on Goodreads before jumping in. Katie and Laura have some strong points in their reviews (sorry, don’t know how to link from the app).

  5. Egged says:

Second batgirl’s comments. At first I liked The Happiness Project but the more of it I read, the more off putting I found it, for the same reasons.

It reminds me of the productivity book category. Lots of advice that takes for granted that the reader has an immense amount of privilege (which, in and of itself isn’t bad), buy doesn’t interrogate that at all.

  6. Katie says:

I really enjoyed THE HUNTRESS when it came out a few years ago. And I’m not always a fan of multiple timeline stories, but the way this was structured worked for me quite well in spite of that. Maybe because it was switching between times in the same characters’ lives instead of between different characters, so it didn’t feel like an interruption. Loved the characters, loved learning so much about the Night Witches. Also, Quinn put three romantic subplots in this book that I recall, and while one of them didn’t end happily, I remember it being well done overall.

  7. Carrie G says:

I have read and really enjoyed the first two books in the Secrets and Spies boxed set by Bateman. I gave them both an A-, and I’m not generous with A’s. .99 is such a great price I bought the set even though I own the first two already. It’s worth it just to get the third book for that price.

  8. LML says:

@batgirl, I thought I was the only person who thought Eat, Pray, Love was … silly. The book was a gift to me from someone I helped solve a problem so I irrationally thought I should have appreciated the story. Instead I kept thinking “is this an adult?”.

  9. Laura says:

@batgirl @LML I loathed Eat, Pray, Love. 17 years later, Gilbert’s petulant whining still annoys me when I see it referenced. I thought I was the only woman on the planet that didn’t worship at that altar.
