  • The Bride

    The Bride by Julie Garwood

RECOMMENDED: The Bride by Julie Garwood is $1.99! This is one of my favorite historical romances and was one of my gateway reads to the genre, if you’ve listened to the What Made Us Romance Readers podcast episode. It has a 4.2-star rating on Goodreads!

By edict of the king, the mighty Scottish laird Alec Kincaid must take an English bride. His choice was Jamie, youngest daughter of Baron Jamison…a feisty, violet-eyed beauty. Alec ached to touch her, to tame her, to possess her…forever. But Jamie vowed never to surrender to this highland barbarian.

He was everything her heart warned against—an arrogant scoundrel whose rough good looks spoke of savage pleasures. And thought Kincaid’s scorching kisses fired her blood, she brazenly resisted him…until one rapturous moment quelled their clash of wills, and something far more dangerous than desire threatened to conquer her senses…

  • Fierce & Fabulous

Fierce & Fabulous by Elizabeth Varlet

Fierce & Fabulous by Elizabeth Varlet is 99c! This is the first book in a M/M erotic contemporary series. I’m not 100% on if it’s an erotic romance or not, but a lot of reviews mention the high amount of sex and sexual content. Readers also note this is a “gay for you” romance, if that is or isn’t you thing.

The first in a scorching new male/male series by Elizabeth Varlet. Behind the Sassy Boyz’s seductive smiles and sinful dance moves are desires that will leave readers breathless.

Fitch Donovan never thought a lap dance could change his life, but from the moment the gorgeous dancer’s lips touch his, his world comes screeching to a halt. No matter how hard he tries, he can’t shake the desire that rocks him to his core. He’s longed for this passion all his life—he just never dreamed he’d find it with another man.

Sharing a soul-shaking kiss with a straight boy is the kind of drama Ansel Becke just doesn’t need. Spotlights aren’t made for two and Ansel prefers to keep things on a one-night-only basis. So when Fitch shows up asking for an encore, Ansel knows he should send his gorgeous ass packing.

Though Ansel tries to pretend that what’s between him and Fitch is far from fabulous, there’s something about the big, burly contractor that makes Ansel’s world sparkle in a way no amount of glitter ever could. And Fitch will do whatever it takes to convince Ansel that when the thing you need most in the world falls right into your lap, you’d be a fool to let it go.

  • Geekerella

    Geekerella by Ashley Poston

Geekerella by Ashley Poston is $2.99! This is a YA Cinderella retelling with lots of nerdery and set at a convention. Readers found this one to be pretty adorable, but rather forgettable once they finished. Have you read this one?

Cinderella goes to the con in this fandom-fueled twist on the classic fairy tale.

Geek girl Elle Wittimer lives and breathes Starfield, the classic sci-fi series she grew up watching with her late father. So when she sees a cosplay contest for a new Starfield movie, she has to enter. The prize? An invitation to the ExcelsiCon Cosplay Ball, and a meet-and-greet with the actor slated to play Federation Prince Carmindor in the reboot. With savings from her gig at the Magic Pumpkin food truck (and her dad’s old costume), Elle’s determined to win…unless her stepsisters get there first.

Teen actor Darien Freeman used to live for cons—before he was famous. Now they’re nothing but autographs and awkward meet-and-greets. Playing Carmindor is all he’s ever wanted, but the Starfield fandom has written him off as just another dumb heartthrob. As ExcelsiCon draws near, Darien feels more and more like a fake—until he meets a girl who shows him otherwise.

Part romance, part love letter to nerd culture, and all totally adorbs, Geekerella is a fairy tale for anyone who believes in the magic of fandom.

  • Act Your Age

Act Your Age by Eve Dangerfield

Act Your Age by Eve Dangerfield is $2.99! I love Dangerfield’s hot contemporary romances and I believe this one has an age difference/daddy kink in it. Probably one of the few I haven’t read. I know she’s taken an extended hiatus from writing, though I’m hoping on day she’ll finish the Silver Daughters Ink series.

Just because Kate ‘Middleton’ McGrath, wants a man to call ‘daddy’ in bed doesn’t mean—
    Oh, you stopped reading. Cool.

Kate gets it. Kinks aren’t for everyone. Hell, they’re probably not for Mr Henderson, her grumpaholic boss. She really shouldn’t have crush on him, but the man is just so goddamn stern. Sure, a lot of that comes down to ‘being her boss,’ but still, it feels like there might be something there.

Tyler Henderson is a golden boy who’s lost his shine. He’s old, his dream career is over, his fiancée’s left him. Now all the former firefighter can do is try and bury his troubles in paperwork and hard liquor. He says ‘try’ because he can’t get Middleton out of his head long enough to wallow properly. He’s not going anywhere near the girl. HR issues aside, he’s done with sweetness and things don’t come sweeter than a cupcake-baking engineer who knits her own hats.

A case of mistaken identity causes Kate and Ty’s attraction to give way to blistering sex. They have more in common—and more to lose—than either of them realized. When it comes to unreasonable attraction you can rarely change your mind but can you act your age?

I say it every time it goes on sale, but ACT YOUR AGE is one of my favorite romances and a reliable comfort re-read. HOWEVER, the Daddy-kink (actually step-father/step-daughter role-play) is very intense, so decide accordingly. (I also agree about the Silver Daughters series: I’m so bummed we’ll never find out what happens with the third sister—or if their Dad ever shows up again.)

  2. chacha1 says:

I liked ‘Fierce & Fabulous’ a lot. There *is* plenty of sex, but I had no problem reading it as a romance rather than erotica. The relationship and characters do develop, and not only through the sex scenes.

  3. Gill says:

Gosh, I love that Elizabeth Varlet series. It’s been a few years now since the 4th book and I was expecting more. Does anyone know what happened to her?

  4. Merle says:

Isn’t calling something “gay for you” basically bi-erasure?

  5. Penny says:

Last year before Network Effect by Martha Wells came out, someone kindly mentioned in the comments here that Tor was offering the novellas free through their ebook club. Thank you whoever you are!!

This month Tor is offering WHEN THE TIGER CAME DOWN THE MOUNTAIN
by Nghi Vo, which is very good. If you don’t already have it, here is the link:

  6. Darlynne says:

I agree, GEEKERELLA is completely adorbs. Elle works so hard at everything with such heart, I was cheering for her the entire time.

  7. Amanda says:

@Merle: Hm…that’s an interesting point! I haven’t read the book, so I can’t speak to whether one of the romantic partners sees himself as bisexual or if he’s gay, though specifically attracted to the other hero.

The term, I believe, is more so used as a trope identifier within the M/M genre.

However, there’s been a ton of bi-erasure happening in romance lately and as a bisexual woman it hasn’t been a great feeling and I want to fix any inadvertent hurtful terminology. Something to think about!

  8. Laurel says:

@DiscoDollyDeb, I’m going to get Act Your Age based on your recommendation. I don’t read a lot of M/M, but your praise of Heated Rivalry prompted me to get it, and I loved it, so maybe the same thing will work for this book. 🙂

Now free: Coffee and Crushes at the Cat Café: a Furrever Friends Sweet Romance. It’s rated 4.4 stars on Amazon with over 120 reviews and 4.27 on GoodReads with 150 ratings.

Kari doesn’t have time for love when she’s opening her new cat café. She’s busy hiring employees, fighting with the health inspector – oh, and welcoming 16 shelter cats. But when a sexy master baker walks in, she can’t let him get away. So what does she do with the guy of her dreams? Set him up with her sister, of course.

  10. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Laurel: I love ACT YOUR AGE—it’s well-written and covers a lot of ground outside of the Daddy-kink element (including ADHD, roller derby, and the micro-aggressions women face in the workplace and the things they do to avoid them). I’m glad you liked HEATED RIVALRY—it’s one of my all-time favorite romances.

  11. Carrie G says:

Gay-for-you has some baggage,so I stopped using that and my shelf at goodreads is “bi-for-you.” Even then, the bi-for-you trope needs to be handled well, and some authors don’t because they are focused more on the shock value of a straight person interested in a gay person, than exploring an awakening bisexualaity.

Bi-erasure and bi-phobia are real things, even in the LGBTQ+ community. I have two bi daughters, and the discrimination they’ve had to put up with from the LGBTQ+ community has been bad, not to mention the flack from the straight community. Bi’s get a lot of slut shaming, too.

There are several LGBTQ+ authors, like Annabeth Albert, who include bi,pan, ace, demi and other sexual orientations in their books, and I’m very thankful for them.

  12. Qualisign says:

Geekerella was a DNF for me, although I can’t quite remember the final straw that had me deleting it from my e-reader. One of the initial fatal flaws was when the evil step mother forced her twin daughters to get in her “extravagant” sports car, a Miata, to take them to their tennis lesson. You simply can’t get two teenagers in the second seat of a Miata unless one is on top of the other, and Miatas are at best an older working persons’s luxury item (I write as the owner of a Miata). A Miata as a sports car is on the order of boxed wine versus a good bottle. Often good enough for getting the job done (I do like a good stick, hence the Miata) but it is neither something for carting around twin daughters AT THE SAME TIME nor something that will brand one as rich. The rest of the story (as far as I got) was based on two nice young people misrepresenting themselves to each other, which I just don’t have time for.

  13. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Merle: I have recently seen the term “bi-awakening”—as opposed to “gay for you”—for m/m romances when one of the heroes has previously identified as straight and/or has never been aware of having (or never acted upon) feelings for another man.

  14. FashionablyEvil says:

@ Qualisign—I am always amused at the details that make a person quit a book. There was one I read where the characters go to Alinea (SUPER fancy restaurant in Chicago) on a first date and I had to quit because spending $1000 on a first date is just obscene.

  15. DeborahT says:

I like the term “bi-awakening” better than bi-for-you or gay-for-you.

Also, Heated Rivalry is one of my favourites too!

  16. Carrie G says:

Bi-awakening is a great term. I’m adopting it immediately. Thanks.
