  • Wolf Rain

    Wolf Rain by Nalini Singh

Wolf Rain by Nalini Singh is $1.99 – and this might be a Kindle Daily Deal so go, go, go! I did an epic read-through of the Psy-Changeling series from December 2020 through January 2021, and this was one of my favorites. There’s yearning, monumental impediments to the protagonists’ connection, badassery, and the usual, delightful emphasis on compassion and empathy, the latter much more overt. If you like this series, this is a terrific deal – and the next book is out in July!

New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh takes us on a new adventure in this next novel of the Psy-Changeling Trinity series…

The end of Silence was supposed to create a better world for future generations. But trust is broken, and the alliance between Psy, Changeling, and human is thin. The problems that led to Silence are back in full force. Because Silence fixed nothing, just hid the problems.

This time, the Psy have to find a real answer to their problems–if one exists. Or their race will soon go extinct in a cascade of violence. The answer begins with an empath who is attuned to monsters–and who is going to charm a wolf into loving her despite his own demons.

  • Steadfast

    Steadfast by Sarina Bowen

Thanks to Ruth L. for the heads up: Steadfast by Sarina Bowen is .99! Ruth recommends this title, saying, “This is the second book in the “True North” series and it’s one of the best. It’s also one that can be read most independently from the others. Warning: it’s dark and deals with addiction, including the rural opiate crisis, and family issues.”

She’s the only one who ever loved him—and the only one he can never have.

Jude lost everything one spring day when he crashed his car into an apple tree on the side of the road. A man is dead, and there’s no way he can ever right that wrong. He’d steer clear of Colebury, Vermont forever if he could. But an ex-con in recovery for his drug addiction can’t find a job just anywhere.

For Sophie Haines, coming face to face with the man who broke her heart is gut-wrenching. Suddenly, he’s everywhere she turns. It’s hard not to stare at how much he’s changed. The bad boy who used to love her didn’t have big biceps and sun-kissed hair. And he’d never turn up volunteer in the church kitchen.

She knows it’s foolish to yearn for the man who returned all the heartsick letters she wrote him in prison. But the looks he sends her now speak volumes.

No one wants to see Sophie and Jude back together, least of all Sophie’s police chief father. But it’s a small town. And forbidden love is a law unto itself.

  • Recipe for Persuasion

Recipe for Persuasion by Sonali Dev

Recipe for Persuasion by Sonali Dev is $2.99! This is book two in her series of Austen tributes, and obviously is her spin on Persuasion. This book has a 3.7-star average, and Catherine Heloise reviewed it when it came out. I usually recommend Dev’s books by saying that, no matter what the colors of the cover might attempt to convey, the story will slowly extract your heart through your ribs by centimeter increments. They pack a hefty emotional wallop, as this one does.

From the author of Pride, Prejudice, and Other Flavors comes another , clever, deeply layered, and heartwarming romantic comedy that follows in the Jane Austen tradition—this time, with a twist on Persuasion.

Chef Ashna Raje desperately needs a new strategy. How else can she save her beloved restaurant and prove to her estranged, overachieving mother that she isn’t a complete screw up? When she’s asked to join the cast of Cooking with the Stars, the latest hit reality show teaming chefs with celebrities, it seems like just the leap of faith she needs to put her restaurant back on the map. She’s a chef, what’s the worst that could happen?

    Rico Silva, that’s what.

Being paired with a celebrity who was her first love, the man who ghosted her at the worst possible time in her life, only proves what Ashna has always believed: leaps of faith are a recipe for disaster.

FIFA winning soccer star Rico Silva isn’t too happy to be paired up with Ashna either. Losing Ashna years ago almost destroyed him. The only silver lining to this bizarre situation is that he can finally prove to Ashna that he’s definitely over her.

But when their catastrophic first meeting goes viral, social media becomes obsessed with their chemistry. The competition on the show is fierce…and so is the simmering desire between Ashna and Rico.  Every minute they spend together rekindles feelings that pull them toward their disastrous past. Will letting go again be another recipe for heartbreak—or a recipe for persuasion…?

In Recipe for Persuasion, Sonali Dev once again takes readers on an unforgettable adventure in this fresh, fun, and enchanting romantic comedy.

  • The Highly Sensitive Person: How to Thrive When the World Overwhelms You

The Highly Sensitive Person: How to Thrive When the World Overwhelms You by Elaine Aron

The Highly Sensitive Person: How to Thrive When the World Overwhelms You by Elaine Aron, PhD, is $2.99 today as a KDD. I haven’t spotted any price matching yet, but fingers crossed.

I purchased this book back in 2014, and have recommended it a few times. It explains what it means to be a highly sensitive person (hi) and offers coping mechanisms and strategies to help soothe yourself (yes please!) when you’re feeling completely overwhelmed (indeed). I’ve used the methods in this book for a long time and recommend it as a starting point to figuring out your own strategies for dealing with *gestures widely* everything.

ARE YOU A HIGHLY SENSITIVE PERSON?

Do you have a keen imagination and vivid dreams? Is time alone each day as essential to you as food and water? Are you noted for your empathy? Your conscientiousness? Do noise and confusion quickly overwhelm you? If your answers are yes, you may be a highly sensitive person (HSP) and Dr. Elaine Aron’s The Highly Sensitive Person is the life-changing guide you’ll want in your toolbox.

Over twenty percent of people have this amazing, innate trait. Maybe you are one of them. A similar percentage is found in over 100 species, because high sensitivity is a survival strategy. It is also a way of life for HSPs.

In this 25th anniversary edition of the groundbreaking classic, Dr. Elaine Aron, a research and clinical psychologist as well as an HSP herself, helps you grasp the reality of your wonderful trait, understand your past in the light of it, and make the most of it in your future. Drawing on her many years of study and face-to-face time spent with thousands of HSPs, she explains the changes you will need to make in order to lead a fuller, richer life.

Along with a new Author’s Note, the latest scientific research, and a fresh discussion of anti-depressants, this edition of The Highly Sensitive Person is more essential than ever for creating the sense of self-worth and empowerment every HSP deserves and our planet needs.

  1. DiscoDollyDeb says:

Nancy Friday’s 1973 erotic classic, MY SECRET GARDEN, is a $2.99 KDD today. It’s a collection of women’s sexual fantasies, published at a time when there were those who denied that women even had (or should have) them. It’s been almost 50 years (how???) since I first read it, but I still have the dog-eared copy that was quite eye-opening to my teenage self.

  2. Elham says:

Jackie Lau’s HER BIG CITY NEIGHBOR is free currently on all platforms.

  3. Katie says:

The Ex Talk by Rachel Solomon is $1.99 on Amazon. Haven’t read it yet, but I have seen a lot of buzz about it. It is listed as a KDD, so I’m not sure how long it will be at this price point.

  4. MaryK says:

Sarah? It’s hard to go, go, go when there’s no link.

  5. Escapeologist says:

The Highly Sensitive Person is a great book! I have it in paper form somewhere, I remember seeing it in a bookstore back in the mid 2000s and being drawn to the subtle colors on the cover, so soothing compared to the attention grabbing designs of many bestsellers. So I opened it, started reading, and felt so seen, understood and validated.

  6. Stefka says:

I’ve read the Elaine Aron book, and while there are positives to it, she does a disservice by downplaying (or outright avoiding any mention of) the connection/overlap between hypersensitivity and ADHD. In the 25 years since her book first appeared there have been incredible strides made in ADHD research, especially with understanding how it plays out differently (physiologically and symptomatically) from one person to another. Yet even in the “revised” editions Aron has failed to adequately address how qualities identified with being an HSP (Highly Sensitive Person) can be important cues leading to other diagnoses. (Just my very personal perspective, as someone who latched on to the idea of HSP as “the answer” before finally getting a correct diagnosis of ADHD a full 10 years and several life implosions later).

  7. SB Sarah says:

@MaryK: Well how did that happen?! Sorry about that – all fixed! Thanks for the heads up.

  8. drewbird says:

One of my favorite mm authors, Amy Lane, has several on sale right now – Fall Through Spring (last of the Winter ball series) is $.99! Several of her others are $1.99 – like Homebird (loved), Slow Pitch, String Boys, and Beneath the Stain.

  9. Kareni says:

The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison is currently on sale for US Kindle readers for $2.99. This is one of my favorite books.

  10. Escapeologist says:

@Elham omg thank you! FREE Jackie Lau, this made my day! I adore her but have been hesitant to buy any new books for a while because my brain has been overwhelmed by *everything* this past year.
I do remember reading the sample of Her Big City Neighbor when it came out – there’s a great conversation between our heroine in the big city and her brother back home, he was trying to guilt her into spending more time with his kids, and she saw right through him. This is exactly the kind of unpaid labor, assumed and expected and never ending, that keeps so many women from pursuing their own goals. *steps off soapbox* Looking forward to reading about our girl getting with the hot guy next door and enjoying the city’s excellent restaurants.

  11. Kit says:

With the (long overdue, I add being finally diagnosed at 37) progress made with autism spectrum conditions since the HSP book was written. Is it possible that many of these HSP people would fit in the spectrum or some other neurodiversity?

I think it may be a little dated but possibly worth reading for coping techniques?

  12. Annie Kate says:

The Ex Talk is cute and funny and emotional, and also the hero’s hobby is restoring antique cast-iron pans, so obviously $1.99 is a steal.

  13. JenM says:

Crush the King by Jennifer Estep is $1.99. I don’t think it’s a KDD, looks like a publisher sale. This is the third in her tremendously enjoyable Crown of Shards fantasy series. A new spinoff series is starting with Capture the Crown (releasing in July) that’s at the top of my summer wishlist.

  14. Star says:

Having SPS/being an HSP is a neurodiversity, or maybe an umbrella category for similiar neurodiversities. The sensitivity to sensory input is definitely a shared feature with the autism spectrum, but the specific profiles Aron is primarily talking about are distinct. Many people with SPS are extremely good at things that people on the autism spectrum struggle with, for instance.

Kari Lynn Dell’s final book, Relentless in Texas, does a beautiful job with this. The heroine, Carmelita, is not named an HSP in the book, but she fits the profile pretty much exactly; meanwhile a hero from an earlier book (based on Dell’s son) is on the spectrum. There’s a lovely scene where the two of them bond over being hypersensitive to stimuli and marvel at how they have this shared experience despite coming from very different directions. (Even though she also is depicted as having almost psychic abilities, which I absolutely do not have, Carmelita is also one of the very few fictional characters I’ve ever encountered who felt like a convincing portrayal of my experience being in the world.)

Personally I found Aron’s book very helpful, but I absolutely hate the term “highly sensitive.” I vastly prefer “highly reactive.”

  15. LisaM says:

I feel like I will be coming back to say thank you so much for recommending the Elaine Aron book.

  16. Lisa F says:

I grabbed the Lau when I saw it for free earlier (Have I ever mentioned I love Jackie Lau?). Love the Dev and the Singh; need to read Steadfast.
