  • The Age of Witches

The Age of Witches by Louisa Morgan

The Age of Witches by Louisa Morgan is $2.99! It’s also a Kindle Daily Deal. Sarah mentioned this one a previous Hide Your Wallet and was excited about the mention of Gilded Age witches. I’ve been so curious about Morgan’s books and their ability to blend historical settings, family dynamics, and magic.

In Gilded Age New York, a centuries-long clash between two magical families ignites when a young witch must choose between love and loyalty, power and ambition, in this magical novel by Louisa Morgan.

In 1692, Bridget Bishop was hanged as a witch. Two hundred years later, her legacy lives on in the scions of two very different lines: one dedicated to using their powers to heal and help women in need; the other, determined to grasp power for themselves by whatever means necessary. This clash will play out in the fate of Annis, a young woman in Gilded Age New York who finds herself a pawn in the family struggle for supremacy. She’ll need to claim her own power to save herself-and resist succumbing to the darkness that threatens to overcome them all.

  • A Tyranny of Petticoats

A Tyranny of Petticoats by Jessica Spotswood

A Tyranny of Petticoats edited by Jessica Spotswood is $1.99! This is an anthology with fifteen stories by YA authors. I’ve read this anthology and if I recall, some of the stories can be pretty sad. You have been warned! But the writing is top notch and I always recommend anthologies for when you’re in a reading slump.

From an impressive sisterhood of YA writers comes an edge-of-your-seat anthology of historical fiction and fantasy featuring a diverse array of daring heroines.

Criss-cross America — on dogsleds and ships, stagecoaches and trains — from pirate ships off the coast of the Carolinas to the peace, love, and protests of 1960s Chicago. Join fifteen of today’s most talented writers of young adult literature on a thrill ride through history with American girls charting their own course. They are monsters and mediums, bodyguards and barkeeps, screenwriters and schoolteachers, heiresses and hobos. They’re making their own way in often-hostile lands, using every weapon in their arsenals, facing down murderers and marriage proposals. And they all have a story to tell.

  • Somewhere Only We Know

Somewhere Only We Know by Maurene Goo

RECOMMENDED: Somewhere Only We Know by Maurene Goo is $2.99! This is a YA retelling of Roman Holiday and for the most part, I really liked this one. I gave it a B. We’ve also had positive reviews of Goo’s other YA romances.

10 00 p.m.: Lucky is the biggest K-pop star on the scene, and she’s just performed her hit song “Heartbeat” in Hong Kong to thousands of adoring fans. She’s about to debut on The Tonight Show in America, hopefully a breakout performance for her career. But right now? She’s in her fancy hotel, trying to fall asleep but dying for a hamburger.

11 00 p.m.: Jack is sneaking into a fancy hotel, on assignment for his tabloid job that he keeps secret from his parents. On his way out of the hotel, he runs into a girl wearing slippers, a girl who is single-mindedly determined to find a hamburger. She looks kind of familiar. She’s very cute. He’s maybe curious.

12:00 a.m.: Nothing will ever be the same.

  • Princesses Behaving Badly

Princesses Behaving Badly by Linda Rodriguez McRobbie

Princesses Behaving Badly by Linda Rodriguez McRobbie is $2.99! This nonfiction is all about…princesses behaving badly. Many thought this was a great premise, but it failed on execution, given that some of the princesses were more myth than reality. Have you read this one?

You think you know her story. You’ve read the Brothers Grimm, you’ve watched the Disney cartoons, you cheered as these virtuous women lived happily ever after. But the lives of real princesses couldn’t be more different. Sure, many were graceful and benevolent leaders—but just as many were ruthless in their quest for power, and all of them had skeletons rattling in their royal closets. Princess Stephanie von Hohenlohe was a Nazi spy. Empress Elizabeth of the Austro-Hungarian empire slept wearing a mask of raw veal. Princess Olga of Kiev murdered thousands of men, and Princess Rani Lakshmibai waged war on the battlefield, charging into combat with her toddler son strapped to her back. Princesses Behaving Badly offers minibiographies of all these princesses and dozens more. It’s a fascinating read for history buffs, feminists, and anyone seeking a different kind of bedtime story.

How to Bang a Billionaire by Alexis Hall is 0.99$ on Amazon. I bought it last night at 11 PM then read until I’d read the whole thing through… and the first thing I did when I woke up was to buy vol 2. It’s as if Alexis Hall tried to read 50 Shades, threw it against the wall after a few chapters and said “I can do so much better” and proceeded to do so. The lead is deliciously engaging and the billionaire is thorn by his desires, but so into the lead I can’t take it, it plays right into my weaknesses.

I’m light headed due to lack of sleep so my appreciation might be disproportionate, but at 0.99$ that book is a steal even if you don’t like it as much as I did.
