  • Pretty Little Wife

Pretty Little Wife by Darby Kane

RECOMMENDED: Pretty Little Wife by Darby Kane is $2.99! Elyse reviewed this one and gave it an A:

The story is really a cat-and-mouse game between Lila and Aaron (or whoever moved him), Lila and the police, and Lila and Aaron’s friends and family. It’s layers upon layers of deception, plots, counter-plots, and moments where I thought I figured out what was happening and was wrong.

That’s all I can really say without spoiling this wonderful, twisty thriller. Just trust me. You’ll love it.

Debut author Darby Kane thrills with this twisty domestic suspense novel that asks one central question: shouldn’t a dead husband stay dead?

Lila Ridgefield lives in an idyllic college town, but not everything is what it seems. Lila isn’t what she seems.A student vanished months ago. Now, Lila’s husband, Aaron, is also missing. At first these cases are treated as horrible coincidences until it’s discovered the student is really the third of three unexplained disappearances over the last few years. The police are desperate to find the connection, if there even is one. Little do they know they might be stumbling over only part of the truth….

With the small town in an uproar, everyone is worried about the whereabouts of their beloved high school teacher. Everyone except Lila, his wife. She’s definitely confused about her missing husband but only because she was the last person to see his body, and now it’s gone.

  • Evvie Drake Starts Over

Evvie Drake Starts Over by Linda Holmes

RECOMMENDED: Evvie Drake Starts Over by Linda Holmes is $2.99! We have a lovely guest squee for this one:

This is the perfect breezy summer read. It is also the perfect fresh spring read, the perfect crisp fall read, and the perfect cozy winter read. I hope I’ve adequately conveyed that I have so many feelings about this delightful book – and they are all good.

In a small town in Maine, recently widowed Eveleth “Evvie” Drake rarely leaves her house. Everyone in town, including her best friend, Andy, thinks grief keeps her locked inside, and she doesn’t correct them. In New York, Dean Tenney, former major-league pitcher and Andy’s childhood friend, is struggling with a case of the “yips”: he can’t throw straight anymore, and he can’t figure out why. An invitation from Andy to stay in Maine for a few months seems like the perfect chance to hit the reset button.

When Dean moves into an apartment at the back of Evvie’s house, the two make a deal: Dean won’t ask about Evvie’s late husband, and Evvie won’t ask about Dean’s baseball career. Rules, though, have a funny way of being broken–and what starts as an unexpected friendship soon turns into something more. But before they can find out what might lie ahead, they’ll have to wrestle a few demons: the bonds they’ve broken, the plans they’ve changed, and the secrets they’ve kept. They’ll need a lot of help, but in life, as in baseball, there’s always a chance–right up until the last out.

  • Kings of the Wyld

Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames

RECOMMENDEDKings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames is $2.99! This is part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals, which include lots of romance. Queen Beverly Jenkins recommended this one on a previous podcast:

The book is amazing! It’s laugh-out-loud funny in some parts. The writing is wonderful.

Clay Cooper and his band were once the best of the best — the meanest, dirtiest, most feared crew of mercenaries this side of the Heartwyld.

Their glory days long past, the mercs have grown apart and grown old, fat, drunk – or a combination of the three. Then an ex-bandmate turns up at Clay’s door with a plea for help. His daughter Rose is trapped in a city besieged by an enemy one hundred thousand strong and hungry for blood. Rescuing Rose is the kind of mission that only the very brave or the very stupid would sign up for.

It’s time to get the band back together for one last tour across the Wyld.

  • The Duke Heist

The Duke Heist by Erica Ridley

The Duke Heist by Erica Ridley is $1.99! This is book one in a new series and was mentioned on a previous Hide Your Wallet. Elyse was super excited about the heist element, though I remember her mentioning that there’s a malecalico kitten and how that’s rather rare, though not impossible.

NYT bestselling author kicks off a new Regency series of “irresistible romance and a family of delightful scoundrels” as a woman looking to recover a stolen painting accidentally kidnaps a duke instead. (Eloisa James)

Chloe Wynchester is completely forgettable—a curse that gives her the ability to blend into any crowd. When the only father she’s ever known makes a dying wish for his adopted family of orphans to recover a missing painting, she’s the first one her siblings turn to for stealing it back. No one expects that in doing so, she’ll also abduct a handsome duke.

Lawrence Gosling, the Duke of Faircliffe, is tortured by his father’s mistakes. To repair his estate’s ruined reputation, he must wed a highborn heiress. Yet when he finds himself in a carriage being driven hell-for-leather down the cobblestone streets of London by a beautiful woman who refuses to heed his commands, he fears his heart is hers. But how can he sacrifice his family’s legacy to follow true love?

I enjoyed all of these books… except EVVIE DRAKE, which really dragged for me. As always, YMMV.

I’m a big fan of KINGS OF THE WYLD and EVVIE DRAKE STARTS OVER. My library has PRETTY LITTLE WIFE so there’s another possibility.

The Daily Kindle Deals contains a book I’ve never heard of, THE BETTE DAVIS CLUB by Jane Lotter. The MC is a 50+ woman (what? and yay!) and we meet her this way:

“The morning of her niece’s wedding, Margo Just drinks a double martini and contemplates the many mistakes she’s made in her fifty-odd years of life.”

I am here for this woman already.

I enjoyed PRETTY LITTLE WIFE—it’s very twisty and I did not figure out who the villain was (always a plus in psychological thrillers). There are definitely some trigger warnings—but I tend to go into thrillers with a different set of expectations than I do for romances, but be prepared. And for those who don’t know, Darby Kane is the alternate pen name of Helenkay Dimon.

Evvie Drake is one of my top reads from last year—I could immediately tell as I started reading that I was going to love it. Sometimes a writing style just clicks with you, no pesky “getting into it” required.

I loved Evvie Drake–also one of my top reads last year. I keep hoping the author will write another book.

I’ve not read “The Duke Heist” so my comments are based solely on the description and the book may be much better, but I have a hard time believing that a woman can be both beautiful (as the duke immediately notices and describes her) and forgettable. Seems like a contradiction to me. As for a male calico cat, it’s possible, although very rare, and it is probably sterile.

Lots of love for KINGS OF THE WYLD & its sequel, BLOODY ROSE. It’s all rollicking adventure & bawdy good fun until it rips your heart out. Especially BLOODY ROSE.

@Darlynee-I read The Bette Davis Club years ago, and I remember I really enjoyed it! I just checked, I bought it in 2016…
