  • The Blacksmith Queen

The Blacksmith Queen by G.A. Aiken

RECOMMENDED: The Blacksmith Queen by G.A. Aiken is $2.99! This was my one pick for hilarious reading in our Ready Set Go. I also gave this an A-. Seriously, it’s so much fun:

The Blacksmith Queen is a bloody, feminist romp that exudes girl power in all forms, and I’m envious of its fantasy girl squad.

When a prophesy brings war to the Land of the Black Hills, Keeley Smythe must join forces with a clan of mountain warriors who are really centaurs in a thrilling new fantasy romance series from New York Times bestselling author G.A. Aiken.

    The Old King Is Dead

With the demise of the Old King, there’s a prophesy that a queen will ascend to the throne of the Black Hills. Bad news for the king’s sons, who are prepared to defend their birthright against all comers. But for blacksmith Keeley Smythe, war is great for business. Until it looks like the chosen queen will be Beatrix, her younger sister. Now it’s all Keeley can do to protect her family from the enraged royals.

Luckily, Keeley doesn’t have to fight alone. Because thundering to her aid comes a clan of kilt-wearing mountain warriors called the Amichai. Not the most socially adept group, but soldiers have never bothered Keeley, and rough, gruff Caid, actually seems to respect her. A good thing because the fierce warrior will be by her side for a much longer ride than any prophesy ever envisioned…

  • A Duke, a Lady, and a Baby

A Duke, a Lady, and a Baby by Vanessa Riley

A Duke, a Lady, and a Baby by Vanessa Riley is $2.99! Like with most illustrated covers, readers say there’s a disconnect between the cover and the content, and that this one is a real emotional, tearjerker of a romance. Have you read it?

When headstrong West Indian heiress Patience Jordan questioned her English husband’s mysterious suicide, she lost everything: her newborn son, Lionel, her fortune—and her freedom. Falsely imprisoned, she risks her life to be near her child—until The Widow’s Grace gets her hired as her own son’s nanny. But working for his unsuspecting new guardian, Busick Strathmore, Duke of Repington, has perils of its own. Especially when Patience discovers his military strictness belies an ex-rake of unswerving honor—and unexpected passion…

A wounded military hero, Busick is determined to resolve his dead cousin’s dangerous financial dealings for Lionel’s sake. But his investigation is a minor skirmish compared to dealing with the forthright, courageous, and alluring Patience. Somehow, she’s breaking his rules, and sweeping past his defenses. Soon, between formidable enemies and obstacles, they form a fragile trust—but will it be enough to save the future they long to dare together?

  • Lab Girl

    Lab Girl by Hope Jahren

Lab Girl by Hope Jahren is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and is being price-matched. Definitely check out the rest of the sales. There are romances, historical fiction, scifi, and fantasy! Many readers loved this memoir, but warn that the audio version is a little too dramatic.

An illuminating debut memoir of a woman in science; a moving portrait of a longtime friendship; and a stunningly fresh look at plants that will forever change how you see the natural world

Acclaimed scientist Hope Jahren has built three laboratories in which she’s studied trees, flowers, seeds, and soil. Her first book is a revelatory treatise on plant life—but it is also so much more.

    Lab Girl
is a book about work, love, and the mountains that can be moved when those two things come together. It is told through Jahren’s remarkable stories: about her childhood in rural Minnesota with an uncompromising mother and a father who encouraged hours of play in his classroom’s labs; about how she found a sanctuary in science, and learned to perform lab work done “with both the heart and the hands”; and about the inevitable disappointments, but also the triumphs and exhilarating discoveries, of scientific work.

Yet at the core of this book is the story of a relationship Jahren forged with a brilliant, wounded man named Bill, who becomes her lab partner and best friend. Their sometimes rogue adventures in science take them from the Midwest across the United States and back again, over the Atlantic to the ever-light skies of the North Pole and to tropical Hawaii, where she and her lab currently make their home.

Jahren’s probing look at plants, her astonishing tenacity of spirit, and her acute insights on nature enliven every page of this extraordinary book. Lab Girl opens your eyes to the beautiful, sophisticated mechanisms within every leaf, blade of grass, and flower petal. Here is an eloquent demonstration of what can happen when you find the stamina, passion, and sense of sacrifice needed to make a life out of what you truly love, as you discover along the way the person you were meant to be.

  1. FashionablyEvil says:

I didn’t care for A Duke, a Lady, and a Baby. There’s a weird shift between first and third person that I found unnecessary. There’s also an obvious villain, but it doesn’t quite land—his presence causes the heroine anxiety, but there’s no real peril.

Also, the fact that the heroine is a nursing mother is a key plot point, but there are several details that strain credulity. (Hello, multiple situations in which you’re going to get mastitis!) And the hero’s name is Busick. Busick! Why??

  2. Kris says:

The vagina bible is a must read for any woman. It’s explains lady parts and how they work in a very understandable and funny way. She talks about subjects that some woman might be uncomfortable discussing with friends or even their doctor. And she also makes you realize that all women have similar concerns.

  3. Lilly says:

Thanks for the advice on checking out the sales – there is a JoJo Moyes on sale for $1.99 on Kindle US – looks like an old one — called _Windfallen_.

  4. Kareni says:

I read Lab Girl by Hope Jahren last year for my book group. It’s a mix of memoir and science; I enjoyed it. It’s also the story of a friendship between a woman (the author) and a man.

  5. Obvious Tomfoolery says:

Definitely agree on A Duke, A Lady, and A Baby not quite clicking for me. It’s been long enough since I read it that I can’t say exactly what rubbed me the wrong way, but it definitely was a book I felt pretty tepid on by the end.

Blacksmith Queen is definitely a lot of fun if you enjoy over-the-top fantasy stuff or have read anything else by Shelly Laurenston/G.A. Aiken. That said, for both Blacksmith Queen and to an even greater extent the sequel Princess Knight the romance is definitely a sideplot at best. There is a relationship between the main character and a male side character, but to me it didn’t feel like the emotional connection was developed much on the page. Not really something I’d count against the book overall, but definitely worth knowing if you’re looking specifically for a fantasy romance

  6. Sydneysider says:

Seconding @Kris! I learnt a lot from the Vagina Bible.

And yes, @FashionablyEvil, the name Busick just does not work for me.
