  • Her Night with the Duke

Her Night with the Duke by Diana Quincy

Her Night with the Duke by Diana Quincy by $1.99! This is a new series by Quincy and the first in the Clandestine Affairs series. I remember seeing a lot of buzz for this one when it came out. Have you read this one?

    Desire knows no reason…

When Lady Delilah Chambers finds herself stranded at a country inn on a rain-swept evening, she’s forced to fend off a group of ruffians with the help of a handsome gentleman. Irresistibly drawn to each other, Leela and the stranger spend one reckless night in each others’ arms—and then go their separate ways. But, the very next day, Leela receives the shock of her life when she meets the duke who is set on wedding her beloved stepdaughter.

When it finds two destined hearts…

One night isn’t enough with a woman as fierce, fiery, and brilliant as Leela. Elliot Townsend, Duke of Huntington, cannot believe his good fortune when their chance encounter leads to an unforgettable evening of passion. Yet Hunt’s luck runs out when he is introduced to his prospective mother-in-law. Dowagers aren’t supposed to look like this…

Leela and Hunt are determined to keep each other at arm’s length, which should be easy enough for two intelligent adults with reputations to uphold. The problem is, all logic is lost when it comes to a passion that refuses to be ignored.

  • The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle

The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton

RECOMMENDED: The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton is $2.99! I really liked this mystery. It’s a mix of a locked room murder mystery and Groundhog Day. Turton also has a new historical mystery that I’m very curious to read.

    THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER.

“Gosford Park” meets “Groundhog Day” by way of Agatha Christie – the most inventive story you’ll read this year.

Tonight, Evelyn Hardcastle will be killed… again.

It is meant to be a celebration but it ends in tragedy. As fireworks explode overhead, Evelyn Hardcastle, the young and beautiful daughter of the house, is killed.

But Evelyn will not die just once. Until Aiden – one of the guests summoned to Blackheath for the party – can solve her murder, the day will repeat itself, over and over again. Every time ending with the fateful pistol shot.

The only way to break this cycle is to identify the killer. But each time the day begins again, Aiden wakes in the body of a different guest. And someone is determined to prevent him ever escaping Blackheath…

  • About a Rogue

About a Rogue by Caroline Linden

About a Rogue by Caroline Linden is $1.99! This is the first book in a new series by Linden and was a previous Hide Your Wallet pick. Catherine was excited for this one, especially because of the working class heroine. Have you read it?

The first book in the new series Desperately Seeking Duke from USA Today bestselling and RITA award-winning author Caroline Linden.

    It’s no love match…

Bianca Tate is horrified when her sister Cathy is obliged to accept an offer of marriage from Maximilian St. James, notorious rake. Defiantly she helps Cathy elope with her true love, and takes her sister’s place at the altar.

It’s not even the match that was made…

Perched on the lowest branch of his family tree, Max has relied on charm and cunning to survive. But an unexpected stroke of luck gives him an outside chance at a dukedom—and which Tate sister he weds hardly seems to matter.

But could it be the perfect match?

Married or not, Bianca is determined to protect her family’s prosperous ceramics business, even when Max shows an affinity for it—not to mention a dangerous ability to intrigue and tempt Bianca herself. And when Max realizes how beautiful and intelligent and desirable Bianca is, he’ll have to prove he’s no rogue, but the passionately devoted husband she craves…

  • The Shadows Between Us

The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller

The Shadows Between Us by Tricia Levenseller is $2.99! This was a Hide Your Wallet pick from me because I love an enemies to lovers setup. Reviewers mentioned there is some insta-love/lust going on. Have you read this one?

Alessandra is tired of being overlooked, but she has a plan to gain power:

    1) Woo the Shadow King.
    2) Marry him.
    3) Kill him and take his kingdom for herself.

No one knows the extent of the freshly crowned Shadow King’s power. Some say he can command the shadows that swirl around him to do his bidding. Others say they speak to him, whispering the thoughts of his enemies. Regardless, Alessandra knows what she deserves, and she’s going to do everything within her power to get it.

But Alessandra’s not the only one trying to kill the king. As attempts on his life are made, she finds herself trying to keep him alive long enough for him to make her his queen—all while struggling not to lose her heart. After all, who better for a Shadow King than a cunning, villainous queen?

  1. Quidnunc says:

The sisters are named Cathy and Bianca? Does it have a Taming of the Shrew element going on or were their parents just fans?

  2. Pear says:

Wait, the Quincy heroine goes by Leela? I don’t know if I could read that without thinking of Futurama the entire time–is it deliberate?

  3. omphale says:

I wouldn’t call the heroine of About a Rogue “working class.” He father owns the works and they create high-quality goods. I’d probably classify her as a “tradesman’s daughter,” but if someone else has better descriptor for that in-between status, I’d love to hear it.

  4. omphale says:

Also, wait, do British people pronounce “Delilah” as “De-LEE-Lah” (in contrast to American “De-LIE-Lah”)?

And quidnunc, there are Taming of the Shrew elements, but it’s honestly got more to do with the dad than our hero being a Petruchio.

  5. Dee says:

The buzzcut on the cover model on the Quincy gives off vibes of “time traveling Navy SEAL duke” and I find that it distracts me from the rest of the cover.

PS. I would so read a time traveling Navy SEAL duke, btw. Which author would try it?

  6. Kris says:

@pear….I thought the same thing. I wouldn’t be able to read the book without picturing Leela from Futurama.

  7. Andrea2 says:

When I click on the amazon link for the Diana Quincy book, it does not get me to the Kindle Book store. It goes to something called “Dude Perfect” which shows some videos. Kind of funny, if Elliot Townsend, Duke of Huntington is really a perfect dude? Made me laugh, which is much appreciated after a really bad morning at work.

  8. Empress of Blandings says:

@Omphale I’m in the UK, and say De-LIE-lah, so Leela doesn’t feel like a very obvious nickname.

@Dee I would absolutely read about a time-travelling Navy SEAL duke. Particularly if he was an actual seal shifter for extra bananas-ness

  9. Dee says:

@Empress – yes cover all bases for a broader reading audience. And please have the dowager also be like a demon hunter or a witch.

  10. KatiM says:

I read the Quincy book and it was well written, the plot moves well, and I loved Leela. But the Duke was an asshole and that really soured me on it. He treats Leela like garbage and other characters like garbage. I don’t recommend this book.

  11. Maite says:

Considering some of the really crazysauce HaBO’s that somehow have five possible books fitting a certain description, why are you all so sure there isn’t a time-travelling Navy SEAL who is a were-seal that ends up a duke in London because he hit a time portal in the sea just in time to save some old heirless duke’s life?
And of course the whole “man with no past/potentially a demon” is why the heroine, part of an ancient society that protects the world, first sets her sights on him.

  12. Dee says:

@Maite if it does exist I will buy it.

  13. Todd says:

Or the SEAL falls through a time portal, changing places with the duke’s heir who looks JUST LIKE HIM. So you get two stories – one of the modern SEAL trying to adjust to the historic period while the duke’s heir (physically fit, but horribly entitled) running afoul of the requirements of being a SEAL, both physically and in a modern society (taking orders? from peasants?)

  14. WS says:

For me, Leela will always be a warrior of the Sevateem, of course.

  15. Jazzlet says:

    WS indeed.

  16. Lisa says:

@Andrea2 I am also getting the “Dude Perfect” via the Diana Quincy link. I wonder if Amanda typed a reply to a chat or something in the wrong spot while creating the link, lol

  17. Dee says:

@Todd like a prince and the pauper with time travel. Love it.

  18. Maite says:

    @Todd:

That wouldn’t be two stories: that would be two books. And that means a series, when it turns out the reason the two men are so similar is that the duke’s family has been using the time portal for a long time, but then it closed leaving one brother stuck in the future who would then sire the Navy Seal and other children who, of course, want to meet the rest of the family.

  19. Jeannette says:

Scarily enough there is a series of time traveling Seals/Vikings. It’s by Sandra Hill – I think the time travel starts around “Truely madly Viking”, but it has been a while since I read any of them so YMMV.

  20. Karin says:

I’ve never read a Caroline Linden book I didn’t enjoy, so that’s pretty much a slam dunk for me.

  21. Karen D says:

I LOVED About a Rogue! The hero is so patient and absolutely perfect for the heroine.

  22. Pink says:

Very first comment to say: 7 1/2 Deaths is a really unique book. I loved it and was very much a bad decision book club. Woke my husband up at 4:30 a.m. to tell him about it when I finished it.

  23. Lisa F says:

I loved all four of these – they’re all great picks!

  24. KC says:

I read (or listened to as an audiobook) Her Night With the Duke, and liked it – it was a fun, exciting premise and Leela was a great heroine. The Duke was….fine. Not a super interesting hero for me. (Also, for those asking, the reason it’s said Leela and not Lila is because the character is partially Palestinian, and in Arabic the name Delilah is pronounced De-lee-puh. Just FYI!)

  25. Kasey says:

The review for Her Night with the Duke by Diana Quincy should noted the book needs a trigger warning. The radicalization and sexualization of the heroine, a woman of color, with the genuine threat of rape by roomful of men takes place on the first few pages of the book were truly appalling.

  26. @SB Sarah says:

@Kasey: Thank you for the heads up on that one.

  27. Juhi says:

About A Rogue was really, really good and this is a reminder for me to look up more Caroline Linden!
