The Care and Feeding of Waspish Widows
RECOMMENDED: The Care and Feeding of Waspish Widows by Olivia Waite is $1.99! Carrie and Tara wrote a joint review and gave this one a B+:
This book does a lot of things right. The character work is deep and brilliant, the historical context is plentiful and guides readers along even if they know nothing, and the writing is so beautifully done. Like I mentioned above, the overall pace of the story didn’t bother me, just the pace of the romance. If that would have been sped up, this would be a near perfect book for me. I still recommend it, but you need to go into this expecting the slowest of slow burns.
When Agatha Griffin finds a colony of bees in her warehouse, it’s the not-so-perfect ending to a not-so-perfect week. Busy trying to keep her printing business afloat amidst rising taxes and the suppression of radical printers like her son, the last thing the widow wants is to be the victim of a thousand bees. But when a beautiful beekeeper arrives to take care of the pests, Agatha may be in danger of being stung by something far more dangerous…
Penelope Flood exists between two worlds in her small seaside town, the society of rich landowners and the tradesfolk. Soon, tensions boil over when the formerly exiled Queen arrives on England’s shores—and when Penelope’s long-absent husband returns to Melliton, she once again finds herself torn, between her burgeoning love for Agatha and her loyalty to the man who once gave her refuge.
As Penelope finally discovers her true place, Agatha must learn to accept the changing world in front of her. But will these longing hearts settle for a safe but stale existence or will they learn to fight for the future they most desire?

Ruthless
Ruthless by Anne Stuart is 99c! This is a historical romance and I’d say it’s a little on the darker side as (if I recall) both characters have a history of trauma. There is a significant age difference (sixteen years) and be forewarned, that the hero does sleep with other people while pursuing the heroine. I wrote a quick review of this on Goodreads back in 2011:
The sense of sexual tension between Rohan and Elinor was achieved perfectly. I just felt that the climax (pun intended) fell short of what I was expecting. In terms of that and the resolution of the book’s central conflict, the buildup was way more enjoyable to experience than the conclusion of both aspects.
Few outsiders will ever witness the dark misdeeds of the Heavenly Host. And among this secret society, where exiled Georgian aristocrats gather to indulge their carnal desires, fewer still can match the insatiable appetite of their chief provocateur, the mysterious Viscount Rohan.
Pursuit of physical pleasure is his both his preferred pastime and his most-pressing urge, until he encounters the fascination of a woman who won’t be swayed. And while his dark seduction appalls the pure and impoverished Elinor Harriman, she finds herself intrigued…and secretly drawn to the man behind the desire.
New York Times bestselling author Anne Stuart masterfully weaves an irresistible tale of lust and privilege in decadent times. Passions will be loosed, egos will be tamed-This is Rohan.

Ghost Gifts
Ghost Gifts by Laura Spinella is 99c on Amazon! This is the first book in a paranormal suspense series and we had two opposing RITA Reader Challenge reviews for this one. There was a DNF and a B, so it looks like this one could go either way.
All Aubrey Ellis wants is a normal life, one that doesn’t include desperate pleas from the dead. Her remarkable gift may help others rest in peace, but it also made for an unsettling childhood and destroyed her marriage. Finally content as the real estate writer for a local newspaper, Aubrey keeps her extraordinary ability hidden—until she is unexpectedly assigned the story of a decades-old murder.
Rocked by the discovery of a young woman’s skeletal remains, the New England town of Surrey wants answers. Hard-nosed investigative reporter Levi St John is determined to get them. Aubrey has no choice but to get involved, even at the terrifying risk of stirring spirits connected to a dead woman’s demise and piquing her new reporting partner’s suspicions.
As Aubrey and Levi delve further into the mystery, secrets are revealed and passion ignites. It seems that Aubrey’s ghost gifts are poised to deliver everything but a normal life.

Heartbreakers Collection
Heartbreakers Collection by Lauren Blakely is 99c! This collection contains three contemporary romances with rockstar characters. It looks like the full collection is a little over 600 pages, making each book slightly above 200 pages. Not bad for only a dollar!
Indulge in three best-selling standalone romances narrated by Sebastian York and Andi Arndt in this collection of the Heartbreakers Series from number one New York Times best seller Lauren Blakely!
Once Upon a Real Good Time
That smoking hot one-night stand with a former rock star? Turns out he’s my son’s new music teacher.
The night I met Campbell all I knew was he played my body the same way he strummed a guitar — like he owned it. Now I’ve learned he’s the man coming to my house twice a week to teach my kid — the best music lessons money can buy.
Time to turn down the volume on the late-night shenanigans with the sexy single dad. Only that’s easier said than done….
***
Once Upon a Sure Thing
Mix one charming rock star, his sweet and sassy best friend, and a lust that’s been brewing for years….
My friendship with Miller is a sure thing. He’s my plus one, my emergency contact, and my shoulder to lean on. He’s also been by my side helping me raise an awesome kid who’s the center of my world.
Nothing will change our easy breezy friendship. Until I have the bright idea to convince him to start a new band with me….
***
Once Upon a Wild Fling
My brother’s best friend has a proposition for me. Have I mentioned he’s a sexy single dad? Tell me more….
There are a million reasons why Miles Hart isn’t the man I should date but allow me to list the top three. He’s friends with my brother, he’s a single dad, and he’s a gorgeous, in-demand rock star. He might as well wear an off-limits, totally unavailable, and don’t-even-attempt-to-ride-this-ride sign.
Then he asks me to be his plus-one when his band plays at his high school reunion, and the night unfolds in ways I never expect….

My 2 cents: I finished Ghost Gifts, but would have been better off DNFing it.
I really liked both THE CARE AND FEEDING OF WASPISH WIDOWS and THE LADY’S GUIDE TO CELESTIAL MECHANICS. I recently listened to the audiobooks of both and recommended them if you like audiobooks. The same narrator for both, and she kept the character voice she’d established for the characters including Agatha consistent between the 2 books.
Waspish Widows got a solid Squee from me; I think I loved it even more than I loved the first book, and I reviewed THAT as a squee here for a GR.
For fans of crime novels, THE RUIN by Dervla McTiernan is on sale at Amazon US for $1.99. This is the first of (soon) three books set in contemporary Galway featuring Det. Cormac Reilly, who has transferred from Dublin and been assigned a cold case. Reilly is treated as an outsider by the rest of the squad and refuses to take the easy/obvious path to solving the crime. I really enjoyed this book and the second is in my TBR.
And I have the opposing view. I enjoyed Ghost Gifts and went on to read the next two books in the series. Clearly it’s a book that garners diverse reviews!
Just Like Heaven, who seems to be a lot of people’s favourite Julia Quinn’s book, is 2.99$ on Amazon.
Victoria Helen Stone/Dahl’s sequel to Jane Doe is 0.99c on Amazon and £1 on Amazon U.K.! I
@Darlynne: I second your rec. For some reason, I’ve been more into mysteries during the pandemic than other genres. I listened to the first two books plus 2 short stories in the Reilly series on audio, and the third is waiting for me in my library. (If you’re an Audible member some of them are available for free thru Audible Plus.)
@Kareni: LOL. I went back and looked at my GR notes. Without giving spoilers, I felt Aubrey was a doormat. I did read a few pages of the second book and dumped it with the comment, “Eff you, XXXX.” But different people like/are bothered by different things.
@Susan, thanks for the added details. I read the books several years ago; at the time, I’d described the first book as a not too scary ghost story. I’d have to read it again to see if my take on Aubrey matches yours.
The Care and Feeding of Waspish Widows is on sale on audio at Chirpbooks.com. It’s $3.99, which is a great deal. It will be on sale for about 3 more weeks.
