Links: Science, Brendan Fraser, & More

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.Welcome back to Wednesday Links! I feel like this week is just flying by, but it may just be me.

Obviously the Meghan and Harry interview has been a topic of conversation on Slack. Did you watch it? Oprah is certainly a master at the art of the interview.

Let’s get into some links, shall we?

I love photography contests, especially when nature is involved. Here are the 2020 winners of the Ocean Art Underwater Photo Contest!

If you were a fan of Rosie Danan’s The Roommate, Danan is releasing a special short story and I loved how she made it look like an Ao3 listing.

TONIGHT! If you love science, join me tonight for this event with Jess Phoenix, a volcanologist, and Jill Heinerth, a cave diver and underwater explorer. Registration is free!

One of my favorite online clothing shops is Super Yaki. They release collections inspired by underrated movies and actors. Now they’re celebrating the work of Brendan Fraser. I’m obsessed with The Mummy merch!

I know we have knitters in the Bitchery, so I think you will all appreciate how knitters are reverse-engineering their favorite knitwear from pop culture. I’m sure Ravelry has a ton of these patterns or groups inspired by this.

Don’t forget to share what super cool things you’ve seen, read, or listened to this week! And if you have anything you think we’d like to post on a future Wednesday Links, send it my way!

Back in 2003, my kids were so “Mummy” obsessed that when we adopted two beagle pups, there was no question they’d be named Rick & Evie. Needless to say, I’ve forwarded the Brendan Fraser link to them!

Never let it be said that bad photoshopping, incomprehensible layout & design, and the overriding feeling that whoever designed the cover had no clue as to the book’s contents were the sole province of romance novels. Feast your eyes on these covers for public domain classics:

Of course, they missed my very favorite incomprehensible cover (from 1950 no less):

@DiscoDollyDeb I’m speechless. Those covers. I was so dumbfounded I didn’t even laugh, even though they are completely absurd. :::scratches head:::

I own a Penny Marshall teeshirt from Super Yaki and love their BF collection – they are delightful.

Rosie D. is an international treasure, and that is delightful.

  6. Heather M says:

@DiscoDollyDeb those covers are amazing. Reminds me of one of my faves, which I cannot find the link to anymore, alas: a cover for Heart of Darkness that was a bunch of cute red clip-art hearts, like a bad Valentine’s card.

  7. Melanie says:

@DiscoDollyDeb, I haven’t laughed so hard at anything in ages. Thank you. I needed that.

I read this article about the history of women’s dime novels. Wonderful and interesting and also goes to show that the gatekeepers of “literature” have always been trying to dictate what women read.

5 hours since this was posted and The Mummy stuff has been ransacked!! Hopefully the demand will prompt more supply…?
