  • The Ten Thousand Doors of January

The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix Harrow

RECOMMENDED: The Ten Thousand Doors of January by Alix E. Harrow is $3.99! I read this one and gave it a B+:

If you’re in the mood for a lovely, tender fantasy novel about belonging and one that feels more like a long, relaxing bath than a hot, intense shower will all of the fancy pressure and pulsating settings you can imagine, you’ll love this one. It’s a soothing pick for when you hope to take comfort in a book

In the early 1900s, a young woman searches for her place in the world after finding a mysterious book in this captivating and lyrical debut.

In a sprawling mansion filled with peculiar treasures, January Scaller is a curiosity herself. As the ward of the wealthy Mr. Locke, she feels little different from the artifacts that decorate the halls: carefully maintained, largely ignored, and utterly out of place.

Then she finds a strange book. A book that carries the scent of other worlds, and tells a tale of secret doors, of love, adventure and danger. Each page turn reveals impossible truths about the world and January discovers a story increasingly entwined with her own.

  • Bellewether

    Bellewether by Susanna Kearsley

Bellewether by Susanna Kearsley is $2.99! We did a Cover Reveal for this one, since it was such an interesting departure from Kearsley’s usual covers. Some readers felt this one was slow to start, while others loved Kearlsey’s beautiful writing. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads.

“The house, when I first saw it, seemed intent on guarding what it knew; but we all learned, by the end of it, that secrets aren’t such easy things to keep.”

It’s late summer, war is raging, and families are torn apart by divided loyalties and deadly secrets. In this complex and dangerous time, a young French Canadian lieutenant is captured and billeted with a Long Island family, an unwilling and unwelcome guest. As he begins to pitch in with the never-ending household tasks and farm chores, Jean-Philippe de Sabran finds himself drawn to the daughter of the house. Slowly, Lydia Wilde comes to lean on Jean-Philippe, true soldier and gentleman, until their lives become inextricably intertwined. Legend has it that the forbidden love between Jean-Philippe and Lydia ended tragically, but centuries later, the clues they left behind slowly unveil the true story.

Part history, part romance, and all kinds of magic, Susanna Kearsley’s latest masterpiece will draw you in and never let you go, even long after you’ve closed the last page.

  • Desperate Duchesses

    Desperate Duchesses by Eloisa James

Desperate Duchesses by Eloisa James is 99c! This is the first book in a series with the same name. Dedicated readers of James may want to pick this up to round out their collection. However, Goodreads reviews mention this isn’t one of her best and there are a heck of a lot of characters.

Welcome to a world of reckless sensuality and glittering sophistication . . . of dangerously handsome gentlemen and young ladies longing to gain a title . . . of games played for high stakes, including—on occasion—a lady’s virtue.

A marquess’s sheltered only daughter, Lady Roberta St. Giles falls in love with a man she glimpses across a crowded ballroom: a duke, a game player of consummate skill, a notorious rakehell who shows no interest in marriage—until he lays eyes on Roberta.

Yet the Earl of Gryffyn knows too well that the price required to gain a coronet is often too high. Damon Reeve, the earl, is determined to protect the exquisite Roberta from chasing after the wrong destiny.

Can Damon entice her into a high-stakes game of his own, even if his heart is likely to be lost in the venture?

  • Girl Waits with Gun

Girl Waits with Gun by Amy Stewart

RECOMMENDEDGirl Waits with Gun by Amy Stewart is $2.99! This is a piece of historical fiction with a group of sisters and Carrie reviewed it! It earned a B+ grade:

Girl Waits With Gun is a historical fiction about the first female deputy sheriff in the USA and her two sisters. It is set just before the outbreak of WWI and just after a major strike by silk-factory workers. It is absolutely delightful, with a heroine who is tall, loud, smart, and deeply protective of her family.

Constance Kopp doesn’t quite fit the mold. She towers over most men, has no interest in marriage or domestic affairs, and has been isolated from the world since a family secret sent her and her sisters into hiding fifteen years ago. One day a belligerent and powerful silk factory owner runs down their buggy, and a dispute over damages turns into a war of bricks, bullets, and threats as he unleashes his gang on their family farm. When the sheriff enlists her help in convicting the men, Constance is forced to confront her past and defend her family — and she does it in a way that few women of 1914 would have dared.

  1. JudyW says:

I DNF the “Ten Thousand Doors of January”. It had some interesting parts but at about 47% mark I felt it start to drag somewhat and frankly didn’t have the fortitude to plow through it. Wrong place, wrong time perhaps.

  2. Gloriamarie Amalfitano says:

I loved both The Ten Thousand Doors of January and Bellwether.

  3. HeatherS says:

    I enjoyed “Bellewether” very much.

  4. GraceElizabeth says:

No more characters named January, with apologies to any readers named January. I only know about this one and BEACH READ (which I did enjoy) but that’s enough!

  5. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@GraceElizabeth: I’ve also noticed an uptick in the number of heroes named August. These things seem to go in cycles.

  6. giddypony says:

I adored 10000 Doors of January (and her name is part of the plot.) I enjoyed the world building and oh! Just everything. It was one of the very best books I read last year.

  7. cleo says:

The Remaking of Corbin Wale by Roan Parrish is on sale this month for $1.99 in the US. It’s an m/m Chanukah romance with a little bit of Practical Magic thrown in. It’s also set in Ann Arbor MI, where I grew up, and the sense of place is quite good, imo.

  8. Arijo says:

Conventionally Yours by Annabeth Albert is 1.99$ on Amazon. That one’s been on my wish list for a while, I snapped it up.

  9. Lisa F says:

    A good set of picks!

  10. Gill Kerry says:

The heroine of Mission, Her Rescue by Anna Hackett is called January.

  11. taffygrrl says:

The Ten Thousand Doors of January and Bellewether were two of the best books I read in 2020.
