Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe

Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe by Heather Webber is $2.99 and part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals! This seems to be women’s fiction with some magical realism and yummy food descriptions. Seeing as I love Garden Spells by Sarah Addison Allen a lot, this should be right up my alley, but I’ve been hesitant to add it to my TBR.
Nestled in the mountain shadows of Alabama lies the little town of Wicklow. It is here that Anna Kate has returned to bury her beloved Granny Zee, owner of the Blackbird Café.
It was supposed to be a quick trip to close the café and settle her grandmother’s estate, but despite her best intentions to avoid forming ties or even getting to know her father’s side of the family, Anna Kate finds herself inexplicably drawn to the quirky Southern town her mother ran away from so many years ago, and the mysterious blackbird pie everybody can’t stop talking about.
As the truth about her past slowly becomes clear, Anna Kate will need to decide if this lone blackbird will finally be able to take her broken wings and fly.

A Most Unlikely Duke by Sophie Barnes is 99c! This is the first book in the Diamonds in the Rough historical romance series and the next book is $3.99. Carrie read this one and gave it a B:
I loved this book for its lovely use of language, its focus on the problems of both the lower and upper classes, the incredibly likeable characters, and the affirming, sexy, sweet romance.
He never thought he’d become a duke, or that the secrets of his past would cost him his greatest love…
Raphe Matthews hasn’t stepped foot in polite circles since a tragedy left his once-noble family impoverished and in debt. The bare-knuckle boxer has spent the last fifteen years eking out an existence for himself and his two sisters. But when a stunning reversal of fortune lands Raphe the title of Duke of Huntley, he’s determined to make a go of becoming a proper lord, but he’ll need a little help, and his captivating neighbor might be just the woman for the job…
After her sister’s scandalous match, Lady Gabriella knows the ton’s eyes are on her. Agreeing to tutor the brutish new duke can only lead to ruin. Although she tries to control her irresistible attraction to Raphe, every day she spends with him only deepens her realization that this may be the one man she cannot do without. And as scandal threatens to envelop them both, she must decide if she can risk everything for love with a most unlikely duke.

Torn by Rowenna Miller is $2.99! This is a fantasy novel with a seamstress main character. Carrie read this one and gave it a C+. The pacing was too slow for her, but it’s possible future books may pick up in momentum:
This book is the first in a new series. It has a lot of potential – good technical writing, multiple female characters, discussion of class and class mobility, clothes porn, and more. If other books pick up the pace, it could be great, but this first book was too slow to keep me invested.
TORN is the first book in an enchanting debut fantasy series featuring a seamstress who stitches magic into clothing, and the mounting political uprising that forces her to choose between her family and her ambitions, for fans of The Queen of the Tearling.
Sophie is a dressmaker who has managed to open her own shop and lift herself and her brother, Kristos, out of poverty. Her reputation for beautiful ball gowns and discreetly-embroidered charms for luck, love, and protection secures her a commission from the royal family itself — and the commission earns her the attentions of a dashing but entirely unattainable duke.
Meanwhile, Kristos rises to prominence in the growing anti-monarchist movement. Their worlds collide when the revolution’s shadow leader takes him hostage and demands that Sophie place a curse on the queen’s Midwinter costume — or Kristos will die at their hand.
As the proletariat uprising comes to a violent climax, Sophie is torn: between her brother and the community of her birth, and her lover and the life she’s striven to build.

Night of the Highland Dragon by Isabel Cooper is $2.99! This is the third book in Highland Dragons series, which is a blend of historical and paranormal romance. I really like the cover of this one and that gorgeous green dress! Some readers felt the plot was all over the place, while others liked the dragon shifter heroine. It can be read as a standalone, though the first book is FREE and the second is $2.99
Acclaimed author Isabel Cooper’s thrilling paranormal romance series continues with a sexy Highland dragon shapeshifter and an inquisitive hero…
William Arundell is a detective working for a secret branch of the English government. When a young man is found dead, William’s investigation leads him to a remote Highland village and the intoxicatingly beautiful lady who rules MacAlasdair Castle.
The charismatic Judith MacAlasdair is not what William expected. The only daughter in a long line of shape-changing dragons, Judith is wary of William and his unrelenting questions. However, when William’s investigation takes an interesting turn, they must put aside years of bad blood and a mutual distrust of outsiders to band together to save the British Islands from its deadliest foe…

I’m helpfully told by the az website that I bought that last book in 2018. I guess I’ll go search my kindle (this is the 3rd book in a week that this has happened to me).
I thoroughly loved MIDNIGHT AT THE BLACKBIRD CAFE. It is soaked in magic realism and laced with southern charm. I’ll admit that I was a bit hesitant when it first released so I borrowed the audio version from my wonderful local library. As soon as I hit the end, I spent an Audible credit to grab both copies for my keeper self. The first time BLACKBIRD went on sale, I grabbed the Kindle version too. I also loved Webber’s SOUTH OF THE BUTTONWOOD TREE, another Southern Magic Realism. Her writing is lyrical and after reading her, I feel like I’ve just spent the afternoon in a swing on a wide shaded porch, sipping sweet tea, surrounded by the scent of magnolias and honeysuckle.
Midnight at the Blackbird Cafe is delightful. Amanda, if you like Sarah Addison Allen, I think you’d enjoy it.
2Lisa: everything you said.
Must’ve been on sale for only a day. The Cooper book is $6.15.
I’ll chime in with much love for Midnight At the Blackbird Cafe. I would recommend having baked goods handy, because I know I CRAVED pie when I was reading it!
