The Space Between Worlds

PODCAST RECOMMENDED: The Space Between Worlds by Micaiah Johnson is $1.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal, so grab it while you can. Courtney Milan recommended this one on her latest podcast episode with us, and I’m sure a lot of us trust what Courtney has to say,
An outsider who can travel between worlds discovers a secret that threatens her new home and her fragile place in it, in a stunning sci-fi debut that’s both a cross-dimensional adventure and a powerful examination of identity, privilege, and belonging.
Multiverse travel is finally possible, but there’s just one catch: No one can visit a world where their counterpart is still alive. Enter Cara, whose parallel selves happen to be exceptionally good at dying—from disease, turf wars, or vendettas they couldn’t outrun. Cara’s life has been cut short on 372 worlds in total.
On this Earth, however, Cara has survived. Identified as an outlier and therefore a perfect candidate for multiverse travel, Cara is plucked from the dirt of the wastelands. Now she has a nice apartment on the lower levels of the wealthy and walled-off Wiley City. She works—and shamelessly flirts—with her enticing yet aloof handler, Dell, as the two women collect off-world data for the Eldridge Institute. She even occasionally leaves the city to visit her family in the wastes, though she struggles to feel at home in either place. So long as she can keep her head down and avoid trouble, Cara is on a sure path to citizenship and security.
But trouble finds Cara when one of her eight remaining doppelgängers dies under mysterious circumstances, plunging her into a new world with an old secret. What she discovers will connect her past and her future in ways she could have never imagined—and reveal her own role in a plot that endangers not just her world, but the entire multiverse.

Game Changer by Rachel Reid $1.99! This is the first book in a series of the same name and is a M/M hockey romance. I know other books in the series have been recommended on the site. Are you a fan? Do you have a favorite?
New York Admirals captain Scott Hunter takes his pregame rituals very seriously. In this case, it’s not just a lucky smoothie he’s craving—it’s the man who made it.
Pro hockey star Scott Hunter knows a good thing when he sees it. So, when a smoothie made by juice bar barista Kip Grady precedes Scott breaking his on-ice slump, he’s desperate to recreate the magic…and to get to know the sexy, funny guy behind the counter.
Kip knew there was more to Scott’s frequent visits than blended fruit, but he never let himself imagine being invited back to Scott’s penthouse. Or kissed with reckless abandon, never mind touched everywhere all at once. When it happens it’s red-hot, incredible and frequent, but also only on Scott’s terms and always behind his closed apartment doors.
Scott needs Kip in his life, but with playoff season approaching, the spotlight on him is suddenly brighter than ever. He can’t afford to do anything that might derail his career…like introducing the world to his boyfriend. Kip is ready to go all-in with Scott—but how much longer will he have to remain a secret?

RECOMMENDED: Kiss of Steel by Bec McMaster is $1.99! This is a steampunk romance and the first in a series. Elyse gave an A+ grade:
McMaster’s London Steampunk series is everything I want in a steampunk world–richly imagined, gritty and dark, and full of hot heroes and hot sex. Also, the hero is a cockney-accented, leather-clad, bad-boy vampire, so if Spike from Buffy gave you tingles? Yeah, go buy this book.
Most people avoid the dreaded Whitechapel district. For Honoria Todd, it’s the last safe haven. But at what price?
Blade is known as the master of the rookeries—no one dares cross him. It’s been said he faced down the Echelon’s army single–handedly, that ever since being infected by the blood–craving he’s been quicker, stronger, and almost immortal.
When Honoria shows up at his door, his tenuous control comes close to snapping. She’s so…innocent. He doesn’t see her backbone of steel—or that she could be the very salvation he’s been seeking.

Mr. Right Across the Street by Kathryn Freeman is 99c! Catherine recently wrote a Lightning Review for this one and gave it a B-:
Mr Right Across the Street is a very sweet, very hot, slow-burn romance.
….
This really was a ridiculously cute story, and I had fun reading it.
Mia Abbott’s move to Manchester was supposed to give her time and space from all the disastrous romantic choices she’s made in her past. But then the hot guy who lives opposite – the one who works out every day at exactly 10 a.m., not that Mia has noticed thank-you-very-much – starts leaving notes in his window…for her.
Bar owner Luke Doyle has his own issues to deal with but as he shows Mia the sights of her new city he also shows her what real romance looks like for the first time. And when he cooks up a signature cocktail in her honour, she realises that the man behind the bar is even more enticing than any of his creations. And once she’s had a taste she knows it will never be enough!

I really enjoyed The Space Between Worlds. I would agree with Courtney that it’s somewhat bleak since the world is somewhat dystopian however the ending indicates a positive change. I thought this book was very apropos for the 2020 hellscape – it’s a great story that still has themes of oligarchy, why can’t the wealthy ever have enough money and oppression with a believable and positive change for the better.
It’s definitely one of the books that stayed with me after I read it. If I remember correctly, the romance in it isn’t central to the plot but is sweet.
I just recently read The Space Between Worlds and it is SO GOOD. The ending was especially satisfying. And Mallory_S is correct, the romance is not a major part of the plot but it was very enjoyable.
FWIW, even though I already read The Space Between Worlds (library) I just clicked on the link and bought it. It’s that good!
Although not as good as HEATED RIVALRY (the second—and, imho, the best—book in the Game Changers series), GAME CHANGER is still a good book. It’s almost as much one man’s journey to coming out as it is the story of the romance between the two men. Recommended.
Loved Kiss of Steel. I’ve reread it many times. So good!
Seconding rec for Kiss of Steel. Very entertaining, very kick ass heroine, and love the world building.
I read the sample on Amazon and one clicked The Space Between Worlds. And then I happened to notice that Rumor Godden’s In This House of Brede is a KDD for $2.99. In case anyone is also interested.
@Vicki Soloniuk: BREDE is one of my all-time favorite books, something I re-read regularly. I have always hoped for an audio version in which to lose myself, but I have digital and physical copies in case the lights go out.
Ok, I checked out Bec McMaster, and that’s a lot of books! I can read everything BUT the London Steampunk series for free with Kobo Plus, but I have no idea where to start. Are all her series in the same universe? What is a good reading order? HALP
@Michelle Ok so Bec McMaster Series 101 then. Blueblood Conspiracy is same universe as London Steampunk (think of it like series 2, focusing on some side characters in previous series, plus new and guest spots from old friends). Big-bad is a carryover from the first series.
Dark Arts is similar steampunky type world but not the same (plus only three books so not a huge commitment).
Her current on-going series Dark Court Rising and Court of Dreams are both fantasy. Note in both series the heroine has to deal with and overcome abusive parental figures. If you like Grace Draven or Jeffe Kennedy these could be ones to try though.
Legend of the Storms is all dragons all of the time. Personally I didn’t enjoy the first to books as much (despite the dragons). Book 3 Clash of Storms I thoroughly recommend if you like a ‘redeemed’ bad-guy trope (also it turns out most of the bad-guy stuff was just camoflage). Plus its alt-historical Iceland which makes a change from the usual.
Burned Lands is probably her most ‘different’ series in that its future dystopian (everything else is some blend of fantasy/paranormal/alt historical). It’s a while since I read any of the books but my recollection is the alphaholishness is strong.
