Hey hey! It’s still February and here in New England, we’re getting lots of snow. I still very much love the snow. I find it so magical and peaceful, and it helps that I don’t really have to leave the house.
Valentine’s Day is this Sunday! I hope you’re doing something nice for yourself. I bought myself a fancy box of chocolate and my boyfriend and I are doing a special dumpling takeout dinner Sunday night.

Ah, schadenfreude! This tower for billionaire is actually kind of terrible. I’m getting major Sochi vibes from this piece.

The Atlantic has an amazing historical dive called “The Inheritance,” which examines “American history, Black life, and the resilience of memory.” The site is super interactive with videos, links, and audio.

I am obsessed with how this Brooklyn ice cream company squandered their business. A wild ride!
…
I do not envy this situation, but I also find “roommates from hell” story to be compulsively readable.

When it comes to dogs, I’m team “Big and Fluffy,” which is why I adore the Edinburg Samoyed Rescue instagram.

Ahh those fluffy smiling doggos are lovely
How about a fluffy kitten… best zoom filter story ever.

@Escapeologist: “I’m here live. I am not a cat,” is my new favorite phrase.
Schrodinger’s lawyer?
The part of the whole Ample Hills disaster that most impresses me is the part where it’s pretty clear from the subtext that the couple has somehow managed to learn exactly nothing from the experience.
I love that kitten zoom call so much! It’s seriously making my day! Every time he says “I’m prepared to go forward..” I just die.
I just watched The Dig on Netflix. I really enjoyed it! About the discovery in Sutton Hoo, excavating the early Anglo-Saxon burial mounds.
I too enjoyed “The Dig” and recommend it. The story is interesting in and of itself, but the gathering winds of war in the background add a layer of poignance to the story.
As for the problems at the tower for billionaires, it may mean I’m a terrible person but I feel not an ounce of sympathy for them. And who in the NYC bureaucracy approved a building where many of the issues appear to be linked to poor construction and design so could have been predicted?
Those poor billionaires. Forced to live in hotels or one of their other homes when the elevators break. I don’t think I’d ever want to live above the fifth floor, or however far I am able to walk at the time.
For other good stuff, if you are not following ZooBorns on Instagram or facebook, rectify that immediately. All the adorable newborn animals!
I’ve been watching The Rise of Phoenixes on Netflix, which is a Chinese historical romance fantasy (as in made-up empires, not magic) drama. I’m not that many episodes in, but the court intrigue is so good. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I feel like US shows are afraid to have characters lie to each other, unless it’s blindingly obvious and/or it’s a super duper baddie saying it. It’s weirdly exciting to see good, neutral, and bad characters lie to each other and have motivations that are hidden even to the TV viewer.
I’ve also been watching Paul Barton’s “playing piano for old elephants” videos on Youtube, and I just watched the one where he memorializes one of his old elephant friends. So sad and beautiful ;_;
Ok so I didn’t read the ice cream story yet, but I only heard about Ample Hills for the first time ever the other day in a romance book. In Cara Bastone’s Just a Heartbeat Away (which was really good BTW), the dad bribes his son with Ample Hills, and I’m glad from the context I knew he was talking about ice cream as I’d never heard out it. Thanks romance; I’m always learning something from you! 😉
Also also, I recently got into the podcast Off the Menu (one of the hosts is James Acaster, for all the Taskmaster fans here). The concept is that the guest enters their dream restaurant, with a genie (James Acaster) conjuring up all their favorite dishes, and everyone jokes around and has a good time talking about food for an hour. I just listened to the episode with Jack McBrayer, and it’s the most precious thing ever. Jack McBrayer in general is the most precious thing ever, probably. The only guest who has chided the hosts for sexual innuendo, and guaranteed the only one who ever will. Episode here: https://play.acast.com/s/offmenu/ep14-jackmcbrayer
@Emma I looooove James Acaster. Thank you!
