Help A Bitch Out - SOLVED!

HaBO: Journalist at a Romance Convention

You did it! We figured this one out! It is a truth universally acknowledged (by me for certain) that the Bitchery pretty much knows everything, and really, it's true. Scroll down to see the solution for this HaBO - and many thanks!

Ugh, I miss romance conventions and just book cons in general. But anyway! This HaBO comes from Shelly, who is looking for this contemporary rom-com:

The main character is a female journalist/writer/maybe publisher and she is reluctantly sent to cover a romance writers convention. There is a cover model competition and one of the supporting characters is in the competition, though he’s not the romantic lead. Comedy ensues mixed with drinks.

I’m not sure when it was published but I read it within the last 10 years. I remember laughing out loud and I’m hoping to send it to a friend that is struggling right now.

I have a feeling this will be easy to identify!

This was pinging my brain as an older Jennifer Crusie book… Is it Trust Me On This. I remember is has a reporter, a book convention, and mistaken identities. I’m not sure if there was a cover model or not though.

  2. NT says:

Not sure this is exactly right, but it does match several of the mentioned plot points. In Lynsay Sands’ Single White Vampire, the heroine is a romance editor; the hero is a bestselling romance author, a vampire who writes biographies based on his family history, that have been received as romance novels by readers. The plot had her talking him into making an appearance at the Romantic Times Convention, where part of the story takes place.

  3. KC says:

Entangled Publishing published a 17 book multi author series called What Happens in Vegas. They all center around a romance convention in Las Vegas. Maybe it was one of those:

Matches some plot points from Girl Before a Mirror by Liza Palmer.

@KarenF, Thank you, I’ll look into this book. I know I read it many years ago. If it’s not the right book, it might still be a great book to pass along as a fun escape.

@NT Thank you, I haven’t read Single White Vampire. I’m definitely adding that to my TBR list. Sounds fun.

Is it Lingus by Marianna Zapata?

  7. Rosario says:

This made me think of an old Elizabeth Peters book, part of the Jacqueline Kirby series, Die For Love.

  8. Merri Patzer says:

It also made me think of an old book by Sarah Bird, The Boyfriend School.

  9. Katie says:

I don’t think this is the same book, because I don’t remember the cover model competition, but it kind of reminds me of The Boyfriend School by Sarah Bird.

@ Rosario, I also immediately went to ‘Die For Love.’ 🙂 Not a romance, and not recent, but such a fun book.

  11. Margaret says:

So this made me think about a book (audiobook?) I enjoyed a while back in which the heroine was ghost writing romances for her more glamorous and popular sister. They had to attend a romance writers’ convention, and that’s where they met the hero. I’m pretty sure this isn’t what Shelly is looking for, but I’d now like to remember the name of this book! Anyone know?

  12. Shelly says:

@aleelya, That’s it!!! Thank you so much. It’s Girl Before a Mirror by Liza Palmer.
I probably couldn’t find it because I wasn’t remembering it very well.

Thank you everyone for your help. I’m turning this into a list of books I could pick up when I’m feeling like I need something on the lighter side.

@Margaret, I hope someone can help you with your book.

  13. Carol S says:

I feel like the heroine in Lingus (by Mariana Zapata) is an actual porn star rather than model.

This sounds really familiary to me b/c I think I watched it on a Hallmark movie: 14. “The Mistletoe Inn”
    Location: Vermont
Starring: Alicia Witt, David Alpay and Casey Manderson
When aspiring romantic novelist Kim Rossi, played by Alicia Witt, gets dumped she decides to take stock of her life and signs up for a writing retreat at a little inn in Vermont. The retreat doesn’t seem quite as great when her ex-boyfriend (also a romance writer) shows up and her partner turns out to be rather annoying. Still, she throws herself into it and gets more than she was expecting.
