  • Into the Drowning Deep

Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant

RECOMMENDED: Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and it’s being price-matched. Elyse & I really enjoyed this horror/sci-fi novel. We jointly reviewed the book and ultimately decided on a B. We loved the cast of characters, but found the ending anticlimactic.

New York Times bestselling author Mira Grant, author of the renowned Newsflesh series, returns with a novel that takes us to a new world of ancient mysteries and mythological dangers come to life.

Seven years ago, the Atargatis set off on a voyage to the Mariana Trench to film a “mockumentary” bringing to life ancient sea creatures of legend. It was lost at sea with all hands. Some have called it a hoax; others have called it a maritime tragedy.

Now, a new crew has been assembled. But this time they’re not out to entertain. Some seek to validate their life’s work. Some seek the greatest hunt of all. Some seek the truth. But for the ambitious young scientist Victoria Stewart this is a voyage to uncover the fate of the sister she lost.

Whatever the truth may be, it will only be found below the waves.

But the secrets of the deep come with a price.

  • Would Like to Meet

Would Like to Meet by Rachel Winters

RECOMMENDED: Would Like to Meet by Rachel Winters is $2.99! Lara read this one and gave it a B:

I was raised on classic rom-coms like One Fine Day and While You Were Sleeping (which I will never rewatch as I fear they’ve not aged well) and for each new outing of a tried and true trope, I continue to be there, first in line. So my appreciation for the trope is as much nature as it is nurture. As a result, I am delighted to report that this book has SO MANY OF THE TROPES, but its specialty is my personal favourite: the meet-cute.

In this charming, feel-good debut novel, a cynical assistant at a screenwriting agency must reenact the meet-cute scenes from classic romantic comedy movies in order to help her #1 client get his scriptwriting mojo back–but can a real-life meet-cute be in store for someone who doesn’t believe in happily ever after?

After seven years as an assistant, 29-year-old Evie Summers is ready to finally get the promotion she deserves. But now the TV and film agency she’s been running behind the scenes is in trouble, and Evie will lose her job unless she can convince the agency’s biggest and most arrogant client, Ezra Chester, to finish writing the script for a Hollywood romantic comedy.

The catch? Ezra is suffering from writer’s block–and he’ll only put pen to paper if singleton Evie can prove to him that you can fall in love like they do in the movies. With the future of the agency in jeopardy, Evie embarks on a mission to meet a man the way Sally met Harry or Hugh Grant met Julia Roberts.

But in the course of testing out the meet-cute scenes from classic romantic comedies IRL, not only will Evie encounter one humiliating situation after another, but she’ll have to confront the romantic past that soured her on love. In a novel as hilarious as it is heartwarming, debut author Rachel Winters proves that sometimes real life is better than the movies–and that the best kind of meet-cutes happen when you least expect them.

  • Provenance

    Provenance by Ann Leckie

Provenance by Ann Leckie is $2.99! This is part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals and is a sci-fi novel. Leckie is an autobuy author for a lot of sci-fi fans and while this book is set in the same world as her previous trilogy, I wonder if you need to read those to understand this one. If you know, please leave your thoughts in the comments!

Following her record-breaking debut trilogy, Ann Leckie, winner of the Hugo, Nebula, Arthur C. Clarke and Locus Awards, returns with a thrilling new story of power, theft, privilege and birthright.

A power-driven young woman has just one chance to secure the status she craves and regain priceless lost artefacts prized by her people. She must free their thief from a prison planet from which no one has ever returned.

Ingray and her charge will return to their home world to find their planet in political turmoil at the heart of an escalating interstellar conflict. Together, they must make a new plan to salvage Ingray’s future, her family and her world, before they are lost to her for good.

  • Not That Kind of Guy

Not That Kind of Guy by Andie Christopher

Not That Kind of Guy by Andie J. Christopher is $2.99! This is a contemporary workplace romance and was mentioned on a previous Hide Your Wallet. Christopher’s next rom-com is due out this summer, so there’s plenty of time to catch up on her backlist.

An office attraction becomes something more when they’re off the clock in this delightful romantic comedy by the USA Today bestselling author of Not the Girl You Marry.

State attorney Bridget Nolan is successful in all aspects of her life—except romance. After breaking up with her longtime boyfriend, she’s been slow to reenter the dating scene. To be honest, she has more important things to do like putting bad guys behind bars. But with her brother’s wedding right around the corner, she suddenly needs a date and fast. Lucky for Bridget, the legal intern is almost done with his program.

Matt Kido is dumbstruck by Bridget—total love at first sight—but there’s one problem. She’s totally off-limits while she’s his boss. But the moment he no longer reports to her, Matt decides to take a chance. An impulsive decision takes them to Las Vegas where, as the saying goes, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.

Unless you put a ring on it.

  1. Darlynne says:

I read PROVENANCE for the first time this week and the answer to your question is: Probably. The Radch series was long enough ago that the details for me are fuzzy and possibly wouldn’t have helped any way. There is some reflection about the previous conflict and how governing, treaties, etc., will be resolved. A new reader could approach PROVENANCE as any post-conflict sci-fi where what came before sets the stage, and start from there.

  2. Penny says:

I actually did rewatch One Fine Day recently and… your instincts are right. Hasn’t aged great. Not *terrible* but…

  3. spinster.revival says:

@Penny, true to One Fine Day. But While You Were Sleeping is an annual Christmas watch for me; I still love it.

@spinster.revival that is good to know! I thought about watching it a couple of months ago, but after OFD decided against it… I’ll save it for a day when I need a pick-me-up!

  5. Hope says:

My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite is on sale today. It is not a romance. I read it last year and it is very good

  6. Carrie G says:

I still rewatch While You Were Sleeping every year or two. I love that movie, and the one-liners are staples in our house.

  7. Susanna says:

I would say that having read the Radch novels doesn’t hurt with reading Provenance, but is not necessary to appreciate it.

  8. leftcoaster says:

I’ve read the last 3 of the books (a record for me!) listed. And agree that you don’t need to have read the Ancillary trilogy to read this Provenance, but you might miss some nuance. I liked Not That Kind of Guy fine, was happy enough to check it on Libby (but expected more funny less angst?) and DNF Would Like to Meet. I’ve discovered I’m kind of over putting heroines in embarrassing situations for laughs. Over it…

  9. Sarah F says:

I really enjoyed Into The Drowning Deep! The author also writes a great YA-ish fantasy series called Wayward Children. I accidentally read the second book ‘Down Among The Sticks and Bones’ first, but turns out it took place before the first book so it worked and I would recommend that order.
