Whiteout

RECOMMENDED: Whiteout by Adriana Anders is $1.99! Elyse gave this one an A-:
I love romantic suspense with survival elements (especially cold weather survival) and I also really enjoyed the espionage/global threat aspect of the mystery. I wish I’d read the prequel novella first, but it wasn’t a huge issue, and I’m delighted to have a new series to look forward to.
Angel Smith is finally ready to leave Antarctica for a second chance at life. But on what was meant to be her last day, the remote research station she’s been calling home is attacked. Hunted and scared, she and irritatingly gorgeous glaciologist Ford Cooper barely make it out with their lives…only to realize that in a place this remote, there’s nowhere left to run.
Isolated with no power, no way to contact the outside world, and a madman at their heels, Angel and Ford must fight to survive in the most inhospitable—and beautiful—place on earth. But what starts as a partnership born of necessity quickly turns into an urgent connection that burns bright and hot. They both know there is little chance of making it out alive, and yet they are determined to survive against the odds—and possibly, the world.

You Deserve Each Other by Sarah Hogle is $1.99! This contemporary romance was featured in a previous Hide Your Wallet by both Aarya and Catherine. I’ve heard good things about this one from fellow romance readers, though some did find the barbs the leads throw at one another to be particularly mean at times.
When your nemesis also happens to be your fiancé, happily ever after becomes a lot more complicated in this wickedly funny, lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers romantic comedy debut.
Naomi Westfield has the perfect fiancé: Nicholas Rose holds doors open for her, remembers her restaurant orders, and comes from the kind of upstanding society family any bride would love to be a part of. They never fight. They’re preparing for their lavish wedding that’s three months away. And she is miserably and utterly sick of him.
Naomi wants out, but there’s a catch: whoever ends the engagement will have to foot the nonrefundable wedding bill. When Naomi discovers that Nicholas, too, has been feigning contentment, the two of them go head-to-head in a battle of pranks, sabotage, and all-out emotional warfare.
But with the countdown looming to the wedding that may or may not come to pass, Naomi finds her resolve slipping. Because now that they have nothing to lose, they’re finally being themselves–and having fun with the last person they expect: each other.

The Good Luck Charm by Helena Hunting is $1.99! If you’re looking for a sweet, second chance romance, readers on Goodreads recommend this one. But others wished the heroine had more of a backbone when dealing with things.
Is it love, or is she just his good luck charm? New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Helena Hunting brilliantly captures the hilarity and heartache of first love and second chances in her sexy new romantic comedy.
Lilah isn’t sure what hurt worse: the day Ethan left her to focus on his hockey career or the day he came back eight years later. He might think they can pick up just where they left off, but she’s no longer that same girl and never wants to be again.
Ethan wants his glory days back. And that includes having Lilah by his side. With her, he was magic. They were magic. All he has to do is make her see that.
Just when Lilah might finally be ready to let Ethan in, though, she finds out their reunion might have nothing to do with love and everything to do with improving his game. But Ethan’s already lost her once, and even if it costs him his career, he’ll do anything to keep from losing her again.

The Idea of You by Robinne Lee is $1.99! I’m struggling how to classify this one, as I don’t think I’d call it really a romance. The ending doesn’t fully give an HEA and honestly begs for a sequel. I made a special drink for this one as part of Covers & Cocktails.
When Solène Marchand, the thirty-nine-year-old owner of a prestigious art gallery in Los Angeles, takes her daughter, Isabelle, to meet her favorite boy band, she does so reluctantly and at her ex-husband’s request. The last thing she expects is to make a connection with one of the members of the world-famous August Moon. But Hayes Campbell is clever, winning, confident, and posh, and the attraction is immediate. That he is all of twenty years old further complicates things.
What begins as a series of clandestine trysts quickly evolves into a passionate relationship. It is a journey that spans continents as Solène and Hayes navigate each other’s disparate worlds: from stadium tours to international art fairs to secluded hideaways. And for Solène, it is as much a reclaiming of self, as it is a rediscovery of happiness and love. When their romance becomes a viral sensation, and both she and her daughter become the target of rabid fans and an insatiable media, Solène must face how her new status has impacted not only her life, but the lives of those closest to her.

I enjoyed Whiteout, but it wasn’t an ‘A’ read, more like a ‘C+’. Parts of it were a bit farfetched to be believable, but I enjoyed the fact that it took place on Antarctica, a setting I don’t think I had ever read in a romance before. My husband and I have watched a lot of documentaries about Antarctica and those parts of the book felt true. (If you haven’t seen it, Encounters at the End of the World by Werner Herzog is really good.)
If you want to read Adriana Anders’s DEEP BLUE, the “prequel” to WHITEOUT, it’s in an anthology called TURN THE TIDE, which is currently free in the Kindle Store. The heroes of the two books are brothers, but you don’t need to read the first book to know what’s going on in the second.
Another book set in Antarctica that I enjoyed very much was Elyse Springer’s WORLD TURNED UPSIDE DOWN. It’s a sweet m/m romance about learning the difference between perception and reality.
HOW TO CATCH A QUEEN by Alyssa Cole is 1.99 on Amazon. Given that the waitlist from the library was five months, I snapped it up!
And THE TROUBLE WITH HATING YOU by Sajni Patel is also 1.99, but that one I’m due to get in a few weeks.
“Whiteout” had one character with a mobility device, and it was the villain. One woman of color, iirc, and she was the villain’s flunky. DNF.
I know YOU DESERVE EACH OTHER. has received a lot of positive buzz, but I have never despised a main character more. And Nicholas really, really deserved better. I honestly couldn’t understand why he was invested in their relationship.
Sure it’s great when fun when Naomi let’s loose on his horrible mother, but she wouldn’t have to deal with his parents at all if she hadn’t nixed his chance at a better job hours away from them, because why should she give up her life? That would be her deadend low wage job, and the friends that all worked there and left town as soon as said job disappeared.
I found Naomi to be selfish, whiny and completely lacking in any sort of growth. Nicholas needed to take that job and get away from both her and his toxic parents.
I would also put WHITEOUT in the C+ category. I enjoyed the main couple, the Antarctic setting and the survival part, but the suspense stuff threw me off. Part of that may be that I wasn’t expecting it to be part of a “super billionaire mercenary club” series, which is not a thing I’m super into. Very much agree that it felt like there was a lot of backstory I was missing on the brother + crew, and I was surprised that a short story was the only prequel.
I’d give Whiteout a B+ – good if a little farfetched – and You Deserve Each Other was a total C for me – too cliched and too mean. I think my pick might honestly be the Hunting today.
But if you can, buy How to Catch a Queen while it’s on sale. A FANATASTIC romance.
Omg EXACTLY @DonnaMarie! I read YOU DESERVE EACH OTHER because of the hype as well and just couldn’t deal with the heroine. She was so petty and spiteful and I didn’t understand what Nicholas saw in her either.
I hated YOU DESERVE EACH OTHER at first and almost DNFed, but I gradually started to like Naomi as she grew up. I think her (their?) transformation could have been even more powerful but at the end I didn’t regret reading it.
I usually like Helena Hunting’s writing quite a bit but was underwhelmed by this particular books.
Those who do audiobooks should know what Chirp often has some good prices and Audible has a $5 sale on right now with some good ones. My pick for today would be https://www.chirpbooks.com/audiobooks/most-eligible-billionaire-by-annika-martin?promotion_id=14138 . I laughed out loud at this one. It was over the top, but still funny.
I hadn’t read that Cole and so I bought it.
…so thanks for the heads up, Omphale!
I was entertained reading “Whiteout” mostly for the setting and the main couple but the whole rich people working for the good side was a little hard to suspend my disbelief for (I mean….), and I did not care for how the villains were portrayed. Very moustache twirly. I’m not someone who usually likes romantic suspense, so take my view with a grain of salt.
Enemies to lovers is a fave trope of mine and I HATED “You Deserve Each Other”. HATED IT AND DNF. I found Naomi’s untruthfulness and vanity the opposite of charming. I usually love so-called ‘difficult’ heroines but I like them to be difficult in the sense that they don’t conform to the usual gender stereotypes, not that they weaponize the stereotypes and then try to avoid consequences. I found her lack of candor and the harm it inflicted too painful to read as entertainment. If she was my friend I’d be recommending therapy in every single conversation I had with her. No HEA/HFN was going to be believable in the timeline of the book so I gave up.
I almost one clicked on You Deserve Each Other, so glad I read the comments! Exactly what I don’t want to read right now.
Spoiler ahead on “The Idea of You” (aka: something I would have wanted to know before reading):
I feel like I need to stress the following about this book. It’s not that it doesn’t “fully” give an HEA, there IS NO HEA. In fact, do not read this book unless you are ok with being emotionally devastated (not hyperbole). You’ve been warned. That being said, it’s an incredible book.
I liked the setting in Whiteout, but there were some very unbelievable aspects, and as others have mentioned there are some parts that aren’t completely standalone. Not continuing in the series.
Anyone interested in romantic suspense set in Antarctica might try “Hard Line” by Pamela Clare. I liked the settings for all the books in that series, actually. Seems like the author does good research on them.
COLD WEATHER SURVIVAL?! Omg you guys it was legit -40 outside today where I live. Who is reading these cold weather survival books and finding them romantic? Are they from warm, southern places? Have they been cold?
Okay, I did love You Deserve Each Other, but I can see the points made here. However, unless I missed some glancing plot moment, the description is inaccurate. That did bug me.
