  • The Suffragette Scandal

The Suffragette Scandal by Courtney Milan

RECOMMENDED: The Suffragette Scandal by Courtney Milan is 99c. Pretty much anyone I’ve heard talk about Milan’s books says, “Just read them all, trust me.” I concur.

Redheadedgirl and Carrie did a joint review of this title and they gave it an A:

Both Redheadedgirl and I give this book ALL THE A’s.  We laughed, we cried, we were inspired and frustrated.

I may have swooned a little.

Redheadedgirl spent her Friday emailing the other Smart Bitches reviewers and telling us “HURRY UP AND READ THE BOOK I NEED TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT IT”.

    An idealistic suffragette…

Miss Frederica “Free” Marshall has put her heart and soul into her newspaper, known for its outspoken support of women’s rights. Naturally, her enemies are intent on destroying her business and silencing her for good. Free refuses to be at the end of her rope…but she needs more rope, and she needs it now.

    …a jaded scoundrel…

Edward Clark’s aristocratic family abandoned him to die in a war-torn land, so he survived the only way he could: by becoming a rogue and a first-class forger. When the same family that left him for dead vows to ruin Miss Marshall, he offers his help. So what if he has to lie to her? She’s only a pawn to use in his revenge.

…and a scandal seven years in the making.

But the irrepressible Miss Marshall soon enchants Edward. By the time he realizes that his cynical heart is hers, it’s too late. The only way to thwart her enemies is to reveal his scandalous past…and once the woman he loves realizes how much he’s lied to her, he’ll lose her forever.

  • Paris Letters

    Paris Letters by Janice MacLeod

RECOMMENDED: Paris Letters by Janice MacLeod is $2.99! This is a nonfiction account of MacLeod’s question to herself after a bad day: “How much does it take to quit your job?” Sarah lists this one as part of her favorite comfort re-reads.

“How much money does it take to change your life?”

Unfulfilled at her job and unsuccessful in the dating department, Janice MacLeod doodled this question at her desk. Then she decided to make it a challenge.

Over the next few months, with a little math and a lot of determination, she saved up enough to buy two years of freedom in Europe.

But she had only been in Paris for a few days when she met a handsome butcher (with a striking resemblance to Daniel Craig)—and never went home again.

A love story in the vein of Almost French and Lunch in Paris, Paris Letters (February 4) is a joyful romp through the City of Light, and an inspiring look at what can happen when we dare to create the life we want.

Realizing that her Parisian love affair would be forever, MacLeod began her own business on Etsy, creating beautifully-illustrated letters from Paris inspired by artists like Percy Kelly and Beatrix Potter. She now paints and writes full-time, bringing beautiful things to subscribers around the world and reviving the lost art of letter-writing.

Tiny Pretty Things by Sona Charaipotra

RECOMMENDED: Tiny Pretty Things by by Sona Charaipotra and Dhonielle Clayton is $2.99! This is part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals, which also include some romance. This is a YA book set at a ballet academy and Redheadedgirl gave it an A. It’s since been made into a Netflix series. Have you watched it?

Black Swan meets Pretty Little Liars in this soapy, drama-packed novel featuring diverse characters who will do anything to be the prima at their elite ballet school.

Gigi, Bette, and June, three top students at an exclusive Manhattan ballet school, have seen their fair share of drama. Free-spirited new girl Gigi just wants to dance—but the very act might kill her. Privileged New Yorker Bette’s desire to escape the shadow of her ballet star sister brings out a dangerous edge in her. And perfectionist June needs to land a lead role this year or her controlling mother will put an end to her dancing dreams forever. When every dancer is both friend and foe, the girls will sacrifice, manipulate, and backstab to be the best of the best.

  1. Kay says:

The Lady Julia Grey Collection Volume 1 by Deanna Raybourn is $1.99 at Amazon. This is a great price for her first three novels.

Alyssa Cole’s When No One Is Watching is $2.99 at Amazon. I know there are fans of her romance here; this is her first thriller, I believe. One of the reviews noted the book focused a lot on the relationship between the two leads

Lucy Foley’s The Hunting Party is also $2.99 at Amazon today. I wanted to read this when it came out, but never did. Her second book, The Guest List, had a great review here, so I bought that one, but I’m still curious about The Hunting Party. Has anyone read it?

  2. Kay says:

I also want to add The Suffragette Scandal is one of my favorite Courtney Milan books and 99 cents is an excellent price for it. I bought the paperback after reading it because I wanted a physical copy as well.

  3. FashionablyEvil says:

I felt like the degree of suffering in the hero’s backstory in The Suffragette Scandal was a bit much. It was just gratuitous.

  4. MirandaB says:

@Kay: I’ve read Hunting Party. It’s a lot like Guest List, only not as good. All the characters are pretty awful, so you really don’t care what happens to them.

  5. Tina says:

99c for any Courtney Milan book is a steal, but if anyone needs extra incentive, this one is my personal favorite. The heroine, Free, is an absolute treasure

  6. Kay says:

Thank you, MirandaB. That helps. I’m enjoying The Guest List, but I don’t want more of it unless it’s better.

  7. Annie Kate says:

Agreed with @MirandaB that all the characters in The Hunting Party are miserable people and I never managed to become invested in any of them. I did enjoy reading it more than The Guest List because I guessed the twist in The Guest List early, but even if I found the plot beats of The Guest List predictable, I actually cared about some of the characters. It felt like each book was half of the things I want in a good book, but they were opposite halves.

  8. trefoil says:

The Suffragette Scandal is my comfort read. PUPPY CANNON.

The Hunting Party was better as an audiobook, as was The Guest List.

  9. AmyS says:

    Paris Letters is so good!

  10. Kareni says:

I’m another who enjoyed Paris Letters!

  11. Michelle says:

Truly loved Suffragette Scandal. It does stand alone well enough, but I feel there’s one scene that has a great deal more impact if you read the whole series. You should.

  12. Penny says:

@Kay just wanted to thank you for the heads up! I was happy to get the Julia Gray 1-3, and also (weirdly) 6, 7, 8, and 9 were 1.99 each so grabbed those as well.

  13. filkferengi says:

@Penny, that’s probably because they’re short stories, 60-70 pages each, rather than extensive novels.
