  • The Devil of Downtown

The Devil of Downtown by Joanna Shupe

The Devil of Downtown by Joanna Shupe is 99c! Amazon says this is a “limited time deal.” How limited? I have no idea. My main gripe with this series is that the three sisters have an awful, sexist dad. The books kind of overlap in terms of a timeline, so you get to experience the dad in all of his shittiness three times around.

The final novel in Joanna Shupe’s critically acclaimed Uptown Girl series about a beautiful do-gooder who must decide if she can team up with one of New York’s brashest criminals without losing something irreplaceable: her heart.

    Manhattan kingpin.
    Brilliant mastermind.
    Gentleman gangster.

    He’s built a wall around his heart…

Orphaned and abandoned on the Bowery’s mean streets, Jack Mulligan survived on strength, cunning, and ambition. Now he rules his territory better than any politician or copper ever could. He didn’t get here by being soft. But in uptown do-gooder Justine Greene―the very definition of an iron fist in a velvet glove―Jack may have met his match.

She wears hers on her sleeve…

Justine is devoted to tracking down deadbeat husbands and fighting for fair working conditions. When her mission brings her face-to-face with Jack, she’s shocked to find the man behind the criminal empire is considerably more charming and honorable than many “gentlemen” she knows.

Forming an unlikely alliance, they discover an unexpected desire. And when Justine’s past catches up with them, Jack may be her only hope of survival. Is she ready to make a deal with the devil…?

  • A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking

A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking by T. Kingfisher

A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking by T. Kingfisher is 99c at select vendors! This one was mentioned in a previous Hide Your Wallet, and the SBTB team has really been enjoying Kingfisher’s books lately. Especially in 2020.

Fourteen-year-old Mona isn’t like the wizards charged with defending the city. She can’t control lightning or speak to water. Her familiar is a sourdough starter and her magic only works on bread. She has a comfortable life in her aunt’s bakery making gingerbread men dance.

But Mona’s life is turned upside down when she finds a dead body on the bakery floor. An assassin is stalking the streets of Mona’s city, preying on magic folk, and it appears that Mona is his next target. And in an embattled city suddenly bereft of wizards, the assassin may be the least of Mona’s worries…

  • Insert Groom Here

Insert Groom Here by K.M. Jackson

Insert Groom Here by K.M. Jackson is $1.99 at Amazon, though full price elsewhere! This is book one in the Unconventional Brides series. Readers recommend this one if you prefer your contemporaries more on the romantic comedy side. However, others felt it was bogged down by too many internal monologues. Have you read this one?

Tired white lace, rote promises, same-old ceremonies—some brides have no time for that. They’ll break the rules, turn tradition into straight-up scandal—and improvise as much as it takes to turn their wildest wedding dreams into real love…

Eva Ward has won a lavish wedding on the nation’s hottest morning show and can’t wait to kick off her happily-ever-after in style. Too bad her fiancé backs out on-air—and cameraman Aidan Walker makes sure her private meltdown goes viral, down to the last couch-kicking moment. The only way Eva can save face and keep her perfect nuptial plans on track is to star in a new “find-a-groom” reality segment. But finding Mr. Right in one month means ignoring her handsome new producer—none other than Aidan himself—and getting their instant, exasperating attraction out of her system…

Eva soon finds there’s a lot more to Aidan than freewheeling charm. But one glimpse of his caring side can’t make up for off-camera politics, Aidan’s own secrets—or Eva’s fear that they’re too different to ever trust each other. So it’s time for her to flip this script, write twists no one will see coming—and risk her heart to get the real thing

  • Jack of Hearts

Jack of Hearts by Sandra Owens

Jack of Hearts by Sandra Owens is $1.99 at Amazon! There’s no cliffhanger in this one, but the second book in this series is also on sale for $1.99. Some readers found the premise a little farfetched, while others said this was a great intro to a new-to-them author. It has an impressive 4.1-star rating on Goodreads.

Alex Gentry doesn’t scare easily. Working as an undercover FBI agent in the biker bar he and his brothers co-own, he hangs with deadly criminals in order to gather information. Danger is just part of the family business. But one thing has him terrified: his attraction to Madison Parker.

Madison is the cousin of Ramon Alonzo, son and second in command to a notorious drug lord Alex is trying to bust. Alex has befriended Ramon as part of his cover, and Madison has unknowingly become his informant. Falling for her could risk this case—and both their lives.

All Madison wants is to get her new bookstore business off the ground, and for her creepy cousin Ramon—to whom she’s unfortunately indebted—to leave her alone. If she could only stop fantasizing about his mysterious new friend, Alex…

As the Alonzo cartel investigation heats up, so does their relationship. But will the secrets they’re keeping tear them apart—or get them both killed?

  1. DiscoDollyDeb says:

Ruth Cardello’s IN THE HEIR is a $1.99 KDD today. I didn’t think it was entirely successful, but it was an interesting take on the fake relationship trope: a woman in a fake relationship begins falling for her fake fiancé’s brother, but can’t let him know her engagement is fake.

  2. Elva says:

I just finished A Wizards Guide to Defensive Baking and, like everything else I’ve read by T. Kingfisher, could not put it down despite being far to old for a YA book (48). It’s an odd blend of darkness and humor – and I will never look at sourdough the same. If you liked Terry Pratchett’s Tiffany Aching series you will probably enjoy this one as much as I did.

  3. Lindsay says:

Do you need to have read the first two books in the series to enjoy The Devil Downtown? I bought it but wondering if I should wait until I read the others first?

  4. Darlynne says:

@Elva: I’m curious why you think you’re too old for YA. Was it something specific about this story? I love every word of the Tiffany Aching books; they’re for everyone of every age, IMO.

  5. @Amanda says:

@Lindsay: I think you should be fine! All of the books are kind of happening concurrently in terms of timeline.

  6. Lindsay says:

@Amanda— thanks!! I’m excited to read this one since I’ve heard so many good things!

  7. Lisa F says:

The Shupe is terrific – and Insert Groom Here is fun! I still need to read the Kingfisher.

  8. Egged says:

Kingfisher is so compulsively readable for me right now, a real feat given ::waves despairingly at everything::

She weaves darker themes really skillfully into her books, without being at all cliched grimdark. And there are times when I’m reading one of her stories where I can tell she’s also a horror writer (and I can’t deal with horror.)

  9. Katie says:

About A Dragon by GA Aiken is 1.99, and I think I am going to buy it since I like her books as Laurenston and enjoyed Blacksmith Queen. Also I feel like I’ve heard good things about the first book in the series on here? Anyway, if anyone else is interested, that’s on sale; no idea for how long.
