Three Contemporaries and a Historical Romance

  • Haven

    Haven by Rebekah Weatherspoon

Haven by Rebekah Weatherspoon is $2.99 at select vendors! This is the first book in the Beards & Bondage series and the other books are also $2.99! Be warned that this is rather dark and the heroine experiences some terrible trauma. I thought this one was all right, but I’m not a huge fan of using BDSM as a form of therapy, which I feel like it did at times.

    A week-long getaway…

City girl Claudia Cade’s carefree life is plunged into chaos when a camping trip with her brother in the national forests of Northern California turns into a deadly dash for her survival.

A solitary world turned upside down…

Nature photographer Shepard Olsen has resigned himself to a quiet existence, with only his dog by his side, until a woman in need of his protection shows up on his doorstep and throws his universe into disarray.

    Two lives linked by tragedy…

Claudia is desperate to heal from her traumatic loss, but can’t stop thinking about her run-in with evil….or the grizzled mountain man whose quick thinking and good aim saved her life. When she shows up on Shep’s doorstep again, she finds she isn’t the only one who can’t move on.

    …saved by bliss.

The two begin an intense, passionate relationship of Dominance and submission, pleasure and pain, but with dark memories haunting them and decisions about the future rapidly approaching, Claudia can’t help but wonder…how long can they be each other’s haven?

  • Just a Heartbeat Away

Just a Heartbeat Away by Cara Bastone

Just a Heartbeat Away by Cara Bastone is 99c! Aarya mentioned this one in a previous Whatcha Reading and mentioned it’s an age gap romance with a slow burn. She also picked Bastone’s follow up in the series for one of our Hide Your Wallet posts for this month.

    Some people change your life

    Others change your heart

Newly widowed dad Sebastian Dorner was unraveling at the edges—until his son’s teacher, Via DeRosa, threw him a lifeline. Now, two years later, they reconnect at Matty’s new school, and an inconvenient but unmistakable jolt of attraction crackles between them. But why does the first person to spark with Sebastian in years have to be a millennial? Is twentysomething Via really too young for him or does fortysomething Sebastian just feel too damn old?

A former foster kid, Via’s finally forged the stable life she’s always dreamed of—new job, steady income, no drama. The last thing she needs are rumors about her and a single dad at school. But why does she keep being drawn into his capable, worn-flannel orbit? And why does being around Sebastian, Matty and even their dog, Crabby, seem to spark so much want?

They’re trying to ignore the tension threatening their friendship. But sometimes what’ll heal you is just a touch—and a heartbeat—away…

  • The Last King

The Last King by Katee Robert

The Last King by Katee Robert is 99c! This is the first book in The Kings series. The man on a motorcycle gives me motorcycle club vibes, but I don’t think that’s the case. I think he’s just a hero who loves motorcycles. Robert usually writes steamier contemporaries with alpha heroes and I know Elyse is a fan.

Ultra wealthy and super powerful, the King family is like royalty in Texas. But who will keep the throne? New York Times bestselling author Katee Robert introduces a red-hot new series.

THE MAN SHE HATES TO LOVE

Beckett King just inherited his father’s fortune, his company-and all his enemies. If he’s going to stay on top, he needs someone he can trust beside him. And though they’ve been rivals for years, there’s no one he trusts more than Samara Mallick.

The rebel. That’s how Samara has always thought of Beckett. And he’s absolutely living up to his unpredictable ways when he strides into her office and asks for help. She can’t help wondering if it’s a legit request or just a ploy to get her into bed. Not that she’d mind either one. After all, she likes to live on the edge too.

But soon the threats to the King empire are mounting, and the two find family secrets darker than they ever imagined and dangerous enough to get them both killed.

  • A Lady’s Guide to Mischief and Mayhem

A Lady’s Guide to Mischief and Mayhem by Manda Collins

A Lady’s Guide to Mischief and Mayhem by Manda Collins is $2.99! It looks like the cover was never updated at retailers, but this was released in October. It’s also part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals. Some readers loved the balance of romance and mystery, while others wanted more excitement from the plot.

An intrepid female reporter matches wits with a serious, sexy detective in award-winning author Manda Collin’s fun and flirty historical rom-com, perfect for readers of Evie Dunmore, Julia Quinn, and Tessa Dare!

England, 1865 : As one of England’s most notorious newspaper columnists, Lady Katherine Bascomb believes knowledge is power. And she’s determined to inform and educate the ladies of London on the nefarious-and deadly-criminals who are praying on the fairer sex. When her reporting leads to the arrest of a notorious killer, however, Katherine flees to a country house party to escape her newfound notoriety-only to witness a murder on her very first night. And when the lead detective accuses Katherine of inflaming-rather than informing-the public with her column, she vows to prove him wrong.

Detective Inspector Andrew Eversham’s refusal to compromise his investigations nearly cost him his own career, and he blames Katherine. To avoid bad publicity, his superiors are pressuring him to solve cases quickly rather than correctly. When he discovers she’s the key witness in a new crime, he’s determined to prevent the beautiful widow from once again wreaking havoc on his case. Yet as Katherine proves surprisingly insightful and Andrew impresses Katherine with his lethal competency, both are forced to admit the fire between them is more flirtatious than furious. But to explore the passion between them, they’ll need to catch a killer.

  1. MirandaB says:

The dude on the cover of Haven looks like he’s wearing plastic wrap.

  2. Lisa F says:

I liked the Collins best of this batch – Haven sadly isn’t my favorite Weatherspoon, mostly due to how the d/s element is handled.

  3. Jo says:

Katee Robert has become an auto-buy author for me. I really enjoy her work.

  4. DiscoDollyDeb says:

I agree about HAVEN. I’ve liked some of Weatherspoon’s books, but I think HAVEN misses the mark. The heroine has experienced a terrible trauma and, it seems to me, is trying to use a bdsm D/s relationship to process what happened to her. I’m not opposed to a good bdsm romance, but HAVEN didn’t do it for me.

  5. Linda says:

So, millenials commonly denote people who came of age during 2000, with birth years in the 1980’s. Most of us are in our mid 30’s by now. I have no opinions on the book one way or another, but I am a little put out that people still think millenials are the generation just graduating from college.

  6. BellaInAus says:

    @Linda.
I was born in 1970. It was very disturbing to read clothing ads and discover that I am “vintage”.

And as much as I like an age gap romance I’m not fond of age gaps where the older person is old enough to be the parent of the younger.

That said, the cover of the Bastone is lovely – floofy dog on a leash, both people fully clothed, the guy wearing flannel (as advertised in the blurb), pretty dress and nice shoes on the girl.

  7. Sunflower says:

Cara Bastone’s book is wonderful and has become a reread, I would recommend it to fans of slow-burn romance. I did not like her second book as much (although, my dog had to have emergency surgery at the time, so no book would have been good enough), but am looking forward to reading her third book which just came out and is waiting on my Kindle. (The dog is fine now, btw.)

  9. JenM says:

I like age gap and slow burn romances so I inhaled Cara Bastone’s book this weekend. The hero is my new book boyfriend, although I did find his reservations about the age gap a bit tiresome after awhile. He feels so deeply and is such a caring dad that he’s pretty hard to resist (not to mention how refreshing it is to have a hero closer to my own age). Also, the heroine is very mature. She grew up in the foster care system and wants nothing more than a strong, loving family unit of her own, so their romance is completely believable.

  10. Tam says:

Yeah, millennials are thirty-something and tired. With mortgages and tweens, if we’re lucky.

  11. Lizzy says:

Check me into the boring 30-something Millennial club. I was just talking to a coworker about how getting a new cell phone just seems like more of a hassle than it’s worth. I think I’m definitely out of the cool young person crowd with my mom hair and toddler in tow.

That said, I one clicked the age gap romance.

  12. Carrie G says:

Millennials are defined in various sources as being born between 1981 and 1994/1996 or 1980 to 1996, either way many millennials are still in their 20’s (25 to 40 in 2021). My five children were born between 1985 and 1997. My youngest (24) still considers herself a millennial because she shared life experiences much more with her older siblings than her peers.

  13. HeatherS says:

Millennial (37) checking in here. I just finished reading “But You’re Still So Young: How Thirtysomethings Are Redefining Adulthood” (out March 3rd) and think a lot of you would enjoy it – or at least very much relate to it.

I’m very much on board with being tired in general (I just spent yesterday moving) and tired specifically of people who think we’re all 20 year-old college students with no concept of what “real life is like”.
