  • The Deadly Hours

The Deadly Hours by Susanna Kearsley

The Deadly Hours is $2.49 at Amazon and $2.99 elsewhere! It’s also part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals. This is an interesting take on an anthology. You have four great historical mystery writers writing an interconnected story about a cursed gold watch. I’m super curious and Aarya mentioned it on a previous Hide Your Wallet.

A stellar line-up of historical mystery novelists weaves the tale of a priceless and cursed gold watch as it passes through time wreaking havoc from one owner to another. The characters are irrevocably linked by fate, each playing a key role in breaking the curse and destroying the watch once and for all.

From 1733 Italy to Edinburgh in 1831 to a series of chilling murders in 1870 London, and a lethal game of revenge decades later, the watch touches lives with misfortune, until it comes into the reach of one young woman who might be able to stop it for good.

  • Crier’s War

    Crier’s War by Nina Varela

RECOMMENDED: The Crier’s War by Nina Varela is $1.99! Ellen loved this one and gave it an A-:

I cannot stress enough how new and exciting this book felt. The premise really delivered both in terms of plot and in terms of how fully its implications were explored. The heroine duo was awesome, the queer love was amazing, the prose had me fully in my feels, and I’m still thinking about some of the deeper questions raised by this book several days later.

Impossible love between two girls—one human, one Made.
A love that could birth a revolution.

After the War of Kinds ravaged the kingdom of Rabu, the Automae, Designed to be the playthings of royals, took over the estates of their owners and bent the human race to their will.

Now, Ayla, a human servant rising the ranks at the House of the Sovereign, dreams of avenging the death of her family… by killing the Sovereign’s daughter, Lady Crier. Crier, who was Made to be beautiful, to be flawless. And to take over the work of her father.

Crier had been preparing to do just that—to inherit her father’s rule over the land. But that was before she was betrothed to Scyre Kinok, who seems to have a thousand secrets. That was before she discovered her father isn’t as benevolent as she thought. That was before she met Ayla.

Set in a richly-imagined fantasy world, Nina Varela’s debut novel is a sweepingly romantic tale of love, loss and revenge, that challenges what it really means to be human.

  • Deal with the Devil

Deal with the Devil by Kit Rocha

Deal with the Devil by Kit Rocha is $2.99! Sneezy reviewed this one and gave it a B:

Despite my confusion regarding some of the worldbuilding, the characters and their relationships are developed beautifully, and the entire story thrummed with the sort of vitality that you can only get from a post-apocalyptic road trip with suped-up BAMFs. I can’t rave enough about the emotional literacy this book is built on, which I find incredibly catnippy.

Orphan Black meets the post-apocalyptic Avengers in the vein of Ilona Andrews’ Hidden Legacy series by USA Today and New York Times bestselling author duo Kit Rocha

The United States went belly up 45 years ago when our power grid was wiped out. Too few live in well-protected isolation while the rest of us scrape by on the margins. The only thing that matters is survival. By any means. At any cost.

Nina is an information broker with a mission: to bring hope to the darkest corners of Atlanta. She and her team of mercenary librarians use their knowledge to help those in need. But altruism doesn’t pay the bills—raiding vaults and collecting sensitive data is where the real money is.

Knox is a bitter, battle-weary supersoldier who leads the Silver Devils, an elite strike squad that chose to go AWOL rather than slaughter innocents. Before the Devils leave town for good, they need a biochem hacker to stabilize the experimental implants that grant their superhuman abilities.

The problem? Their hacker’s been kidnapped. And the ransom for her return is Nina. Knox has the perfect bait for a perfect trap: a lost Library of Congress server. The data could set Nina and her team up for years…

    If they live that long.

  • An Illusion of Thieves

An Illusion of Thieves by Cate Glass

An Illusion of Thieves by Cate Glass is $2.99! I mentioned this one in this May’s Hide Your Wallet about how awesome this sounded. I did wind up buying it, but of course, haven’t gotten around to reading it. Have you read this one?

In Cantagna, being a sorcerer is a death sentence.

Romy escapes her hardscrabble upbringing when she becomes courtesan to the Shadow Lord, a revolutionary noble who brings laws and comforts once reserved for the wealthy to all. When her brother, Neri, is caught thieving with the aid of magic, Romy’s aristocratic influence is the only thing that can spare his life—and the price is her banishment.

Now back in Beggar’s Ring, she has just her wits and her own long-hidden sorcery to help her and Neri survive. But when a plot to overthrow the Shadow Lord and incite civil war is uncovered, only Romy knows how to stop it. To do so, she’ll have to rely on newfound allies—a swordmaster, a silversmith, and her own thieving brother. And they’ll need the very thing that could condemn them all: magic.

Going to have to one click on THE DEADLY HOURS. I really like Harris and Huber, so this sounds right up my alley!

  2. Arijo says:

Wow, what an interesting line up! I ended up getting all of them.

The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North is on sale at 2.99$. It’s not romance, but it’s a fascinating book about a group of people living their live again and again. What makes it so good is the way North intricately built how such a group could interact with the rest of the world, how they auto regulate and how a course of action can be plotted over literal lifetimes. Lots of other Claire North at 2.99$ too.

Also on sale are book 1 & 2 of Kate Clayborn’s Chance of a Lifetime series (at 3.99$ and 1.99$ respectively).

…Urgh, I bought so many books today T__T Blew my book budget for the next 4 months

  3. Barb in Maryland says:

THE DEADLY HOURS was clever, well written, and totally satisfying. Well worth buying and reading. I grabbed it because of Kearsley and Harris, who I knew would not disappoint me. Now to track down more of Huber and Trent’s books.

  4. Darlynne says:

THE LEFT-HANDED BOOKSELLERS OF LONDON by Garth Nix is on sale at Amazon US today for $2.99. I’ve heard great things about it; one reviewer said this, which I thought was interesting:

This was written way before the Rowling Twitter blowup but any readers no longer feeling safe in Potterland can come right here; I think there’s room for everyone, especially as far as fashion goes. It’s also a bit on the A side of YA.

  5. Jcp says:

There is 2020 Goodbye author hop going on until tomorrow. Each author is giving away a free ebook at each stop. The winner gets a $100 Amazon gmc which we always need… go to Elizabeth Rose’s web site ASAP.
