Cover Awe: Ghost Squads, Embroidery, & More

Pretty covers time!

Ever Cursed by Corey Ann Haydu. A rose gold and black clock is nestled in a bed of pink roses, white lilies, and light green flowers. The title is in rose gold, along with a rectangular frame around everything.

Cover design by Heather Palisi-Reyes

Sarah: I did think it said Fever Cursed. But wow!

Maya: Same, Sarah!!

Carrie: That’s a lot of cover, in the best way.

Amanda: I love the cover palette so much!

Shana: I’m enjoying the 90s color scheme and vibe. I would read this while wearing a velvet choker.

Lara: I’d pair that choker with a white t-shirt worn underneath a black spaghetti strap dress.

Catherine: It reminds me of those memento mori still lifes. I keep looking for a skull.

Ghost Squad by Claribel A. Ortega. An illustration of two Black children on bikes. One has a fluffy grey cat in its bike basket. Ghostly white columns surround the kids, as well as wispy ghostly figures.

Cover design by Christopher Stengel

Maya: Adorable babies!

Elyse: And a floofy chonk!

Amanda: Part of me hopes that’s a graphic novel because HOW FREAKIN CUTE.

Maya: Not a graphic novel, unfortunately, but the author does have my dream job!

(she makes gifs!!!!!!!)

Sneezy: I can’t stop staring at the cover of Ghost Squad!!!!! Not only does it have the two adorable munchkins and their cat, it looks like they’re BIKING to a LAND OF GHOSTS. The rest of the cover with the magical plants, pillars and overhead arch looks like the BEST mash of Persian + Indian + Matisse. The pastel palette is so translucent and LUMINOUS, and mashes SO WELL with the opaque, even neon tones… oh my gah, I can’t stop gushing!!!!!

Lara: This cover just screams JOY to me!

Catherine: 100% the two cutest children I have ever seen on the cover of anything.

Beauty Tempts the Beast by Lorraine Heath. In a dimly lit sitting room, a blonde woman in an emerald green dress is pulling on a dark-haired man's cravat, drawing him closer.

Amanda: I like how the heroine seems to be in a position of power here and the hero is the one half dressed.

EllenM: Oooh

Elyse: There is definitely a power dynamic in the heroine’s favor. I’m tired of books where she’s bent backwards in some weird position that looks like it would be painful or require lots of yoga practice.

Lara: That green colour is really working for me. I wants it!

Among the Beasts and Briars by Ashley Poston. A white cover where all the elements look embroidered. The title is in gold, there are two purple birds fluttering around a red crown. Beneath the title are tree roots that are hiding a fox.

Cover design by Corina Lupp

Amanda: What a difference from her previous covers! And that detail! I would definitely buy a special edition with an actual embroidered cover.

Catherine: Oh, that’s gorgeous!

Sneezy: I love how it looks like an embroidered tapestry!!!!!

Sarah: That is stunning.

Elyse: The 3-D quality is amazing.

Shana: Swoon. This makes me want to pet the cover

Lara: I’m just drooling at this point.

The cover of Ghost Squad is so good that I automatically went to see whether my library has a copy. And they do!! So I know what I’ll be listening to this weekend!

On the cover of Beauty Tempts the Beast I initially thought she had a knife to his throat. Now THAT is a power dynamic!

‘Among the Beasts and Briars’ is def not my kind of book, but LOVE that cover.

The cover of that Heath looks like she’s about to bite out his carotid artery and the Hemsworth is going to let her.

The Ever Cursed cover is spectacular and the spaghetti strap dress should be velvet. The choker should be one of those plastic ones that look like a lace tattoo.

Beasts and Briars looks like something I’d start in a fit or aspirational optimism and never finish. I want to frame that cover.

Ghost Squad is one of those books I’d never read because I’m so busy finding something new on the cover.

  7. Diana says:

I would buy Among the Beasts & Briars based on the cover only. What a beautiful composition!

Thankfully I’m not in a bookshop to indulge, so I’ll take a look on goodreads to see if it’s actually worth it 🙂

The book Beauty Tempts the Beast is Really Good!!! So worth it. The story is wonderful and the they rock the sheets as well. He is extremely respectful of her in bed as well as out of it. This man is beyond patient as well as very sexy. I personally advised enjoying this whole series by Lorraine Heath. You will not be disappointed in the least.
