  • How to Be Less Stupid About Race

How to Be Less Stupid About Race by Crystal Marie Felming

How to Be Less Stupid About Race by Crystal Marie Fleming is $2.99! Earlier this year, anti-racist books were flying off the shelves, but of course, we should all continue to do the work in being anti-racist even after the cultural zeitgeist has passed.

A unique and irreverent take on everything that’s wrong with our “national conversation about race”–and what to do about it

How to Be Less Stupid About Race is your essential guide to breaking through the half-truths and ridiculous misconceptions that have thoroughly corrupted the way race is represented in the classroom, pop culture, media, and politics. Centuries after our nation was founded on genocide, settler colonialism, and slavery, many Americans are kinda-sorta-maybe waking up to the reality that our racial politics are (still) garbage. But in the midst of this reckoning, widespread denial and misunderstandings about race persist, even as white supremacy and racial injustice are more visible than ever before.

Combining no-holds-barred social critique, humorous personal anecdotes, and analysis of the latest interdisciplinary scholarship on systemic racism, sociologist Crystal M. Fleming provides a fresh, accessible, and irreverent take on everything that’s wrong with our “national conversation about race.” Drawing upon critical race theory, as well as her own experiences as a queer black millennial college professor and researcher, Fleming unveils how systemic racism exposes us all to racial ignorance–and provides a road map for transforming our knowledge into concrete social change.

Searing, sobering, and urgently needed, How to Be Less Stupid About Race is a truth bomb and call to action for everyone who wants to challenge white supremacy and intersectional oppression. If you like Issa Rae, Justin Simien, Angela Davis, and Morgan Jerkins, then this deeply relevant, bold, and incisive book is for you.

  • The Two-Date Rule

The Two-Date Rule by Tawna Fenske

The Two-Date Rule by Tawna Fenske is 99c! This contemporary romance and the first in the Smokejumper series. As the series title suggest, the hero is a smokejumper and both characters have limited dating rules. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads.

Willa Frank has one simple rule: never go on a date with anyone more than twice. Now that her business is providing the stability she’s always needed, she can’t afford distractions. Her two-date rule will protect her just fine…until she meets smokejumper Grady Billman.

After one date—one amazing, unforgettable date—Grady isn’t ready to call it quits, despite his own no-attachments policy, and he’s found a sneaky way around both their rules.

Throwing gutter balls with pitchers of beer? Not a real date. Everyone knows bowling doesn’t count.

Watching a band play at a local show? They just happen to have the same great taste in music. Definitely not a date.

Hiking? Nope. How can exercise be considered a date?

With every “non-date” Grady suggests, his reasoning gets more ridiculous, and Willa must admit she’s having fun playing along. But when their time together costs Willa two critical clients, it’s clear she needs to focus on the only thing that matters—her future. And really, he should do the same.

But what is she supposed to do with a future that looks gray without Grady in it?

  • Lady Louisa’s Christmas Knight

Lady Louisa’s Christmas Knight by Grace Burrowes

Lady Louisa’s Christmas Knight by Grace Burrowes is $1.99! This is book six in the Windham series and it’s a holiday historical romance, in case you want to keep stocking those up on your e-reader. I think I’ve said this before, but Burrowes is hit or miss for me, but YMMV!

    ‘Tis the Season for Scandal…

Years ago Lady Louisa Windham acted rashly on a dare from her brother, and that indiscretion is about to come to light. She knows her reputation will never survive exposure. Just as she’s nearly overwhelmed by her dilemma, Sir Joseph Carrington offers himself to her as a solution…

But Sir Joseph has secrets as well, and as he and Louisa become entangled with each other, their deceptions begin to close in on them both…

  • First to Burn

First to Burn by Anna Richland

First to Burn by Anna Richland is 99c! This is the first book in her Immortal Vikings series and readers had mixed feelings about the hero. Many found him unique and loyal, but others remarked that he had a lot going on with his immortality and PTSD. This book has a 3.7-star rating on Goodreads.

    A soldier with secrets

Immortal Viking Wulf Wardsen once battled alongside Beowulf, and now serves in Afghanistan. He’s trusted the mortal men on his elite special operations team to protect his secret, until an explosion lands Wulf in a place more dangerous to him than a battlefield: a medevac helicopter.

    A doctor with questions

Army captain Theresa Chiesa follows the rules and expects the same from others, even special forces hotshots like Sergeant Wardsen. She’s determined to discover the secret behind his supernaturally fast healing, and she won’t allow his sexy smile to distract her.

An enemy with nothing to lose

Even as Theresa’s investigation threatens to expose him, Wulf is stirred by her passion. Dreaming of love and a normal life, he wants nothing more than to build a future with her. But the lost Viking relic needed to reverse his immortality is being hunted by another—an ancient enemy who won’t hesitate to hurt Theresa to strike back at Wulf.

I haven’t read this Burrowes yet! Off to Amazon I go!

  2. JoJo says:

I usually love Tawna Fenske, but The 2 Date Rule I just couldn’t finish. It was just full of so much eye rolling and not cute interplay that I was done after about 1/3. Pity because I really love her Ponderosa Pine series.
    Sigh.

Ho ho Holiday collection by Cindy Kirk is free today and tomorrow only

  4. cleo says:

I thought First to Burn was a mess – I think it’s Anna Richland’s first novel and it shows. There’s enough plot for like 3 books and the characters never gelled. If you’ve never read this author, I wouldn’t start here.

I liked His Road Home much, much better.

  5. Kareni says:

I found First to Burn A pleasant read, but I have read and reread His Road Home.
