  • Real Men Knit

Real Men Knit by Kwana Jackson

Real Men Knit by Kwana Jackson is $1.99 today only! Hot diggity. Shana and Carrie reviewed this and gave it a B, saying, “this is a character-focused book and is all about the romance between Jesse and Kerry, as well as the importance of family, friendship, and community. Also there’s a lot of knitting.”

When their foster-turned-adoptive mother suddenly dies, four brothers struggle to keep open the doors of her beloved Harlem knitting shop.

Jesse Strong is known for two things: his devotion to his adoptive mom, Mama Joy, and his reputation for breaking hearts. When Mama Joy unexpectedly passes away, he and his brothers have different plans for what to do with Strong Knits, their neighborhood knitting store. Jesse wants to keep the store open. His brothers want to tie off loose ends and close shop….

Part-time shop employee Kerry Fuller has kept her crush on Jesse a secret. When she overhears his impassioned plea to his brothers to keep the knitting shop open, she volunteers to help. Unlike Jesse, Kerry knows the “knitty-gritty” of the business, and together they make plans to reinvent Strong Knits for a new generation.

But the more time they spend together, the stronger the chemistry builds between them. Kerry, knowing Jesse’s history, doesn’t believe their relationship can last longer than she can knit one, purl two. But Jesse is determined to prove to her that he can be the man for her forever and always. After all, real men knit.

  • Beach Read

    Beach Read by Emily Henry

Beach Read by Emily Henry is $2.99! This book is on so many year-end lists, and Catherine gave it an A, too: “I love this book. It does take you down into the darkness at times, but it leads you out again, and shows you the path so that you will be able to find it next time. It is sweet and sharp and clever and extremely funny and it left me with a happy sigh and a smile on my face.”

A romance writer who no longer believes in love and a literary writer stuck in a rut engage in a summer-long challenge that may just upend everything they believe about happily ever afters.

Augustus Everett is an acclaimed author of literary fiction. January Andrews writes bestselling romance. When she pens a happily ever after, he kills off his entire cast.

    They’re polar opposites.

In fact, the only thing they have in common is that for the next three months, they’re living in neighboring beach houses, broke, and bogged down with writer’s block.

Until, one hazy evening, one thing leads to another and they strike a deal designed to force them out of their creative ruts: Augustus will spend the summer writing something happy, and January will pen the next Great American Novel. She’ll take him on field trips worthy of any rom-com montage, and he’ll take her to interview surviving members of a backwoods death cult (obviously). Everyone will finish a book and no one will fall in love. Really.

  • Juliet Takes a Breath

Juliet Takes a Breath by Gabby Rivera

Juliet Takes a Breath by Gabby Rivera is $2.99! This is a YA that’s also on many year-end lists, and received an A- from Carrie: “I gained a new sense of humility as well as the joy of knowing that many readers who rarely see themselves represented will find themselves in this book. I also laughed my face off. “

A gutsy, queer coming-of-age story perfect for fans of Nina LaCour, Rainbow Rowell, and Elizabeth Acevedo.

Juliet Milagros Palante is a self-proclaimed closeted Puerto Rican baby dyke from the Bronx.

Only, she’s not so closeted anymore. Not after coming out to her family the night before flying to Portland, Oregon to intern with her favorite feminist writer–what’s sure to be a life changing experience. And when Juliet’s coming out crashes and burns, she’s not sure her mom will ever speak to her again.

But Juliet has a plan–sort of. Her internship with legendary author Harlowe Brisbane, the ultimate authority on feminism, women’s bodies, and other gay-sounding stuff is sure to help her figure out this whole “Puerto Rican lesbian” thing. Except Harlowe’s white. And not from the Bronx. And she definitely doesn’t have all the answers . . .

In a summer bursting with queer brown dance parties, a sexy fling with a motorcycling librarian, and intense explorations of race and identity, Juliet learns what it means to come out–to the world, to her family, to herself.

  • Bonds of Brass

Bonds of Brass by Emily Skrutskie

Bonds of Brass by Emily Skrutskie is $2.99 today! Ellen gave this a B+ and can probably describe this book better than anyone: “This book has everything: Fighter pilot school! An evil intergalactic empire! Multiple almost-kisses! Angsty space boyfriends! Daring and reckless escapes! Gundam-style robot suits! A bold rebellion! A junky yet lovable spaceship with a whimsical name!”

A young pilot risks everything to save his best friend–the man he trusts most and might even love–only to learn that he’s secretly the heir to a brutal galactic empire.

Ettian Nassun’s life was shattered when the merciless Umber Empire invaded. He’s spent seven years putting himself back together under its rule, joining an Umber military academy and becoming the best pilot in his class. Even better, he’s met Gal Veres–his exasperating and infuriatingly enticing roommate who’s made the Academy feel like a new home.

But when dozens of classmates spring an assassination plot on Gal, a devastating secret comes to light: Gal is the heir to the Umber Empire. Ettian barely manages to save his best friend and flee the compromised Academy unscathed, rattled both that Gal stands to inherit the empire that broke him and that there are still people willing to fight back against Umber rule. As they piece together a way to deliver Gal safely to his throne, Ettian finds himself torn in half by an impossible choice. Does he save the man who’s won his heart and trust that Gal’s goodness could transform the empire? Or does he throw his lot in with the brewing rebellion and fight to take back what’s rightfully theirs?

I loved Juliet Takes a Breathe and recommend it.

Here’s a bit from my GR review:

“Really enjoyed this queer ya/NA coming of age story about a young woman’s memorable summer internship after her first year of college.

I believe this is Gabby Rivera’s first novel and it shows in places. It tackles a lot – queer identity, intersectional 3rd wave feminism, racism, homophobia – and occasionally I felt like I was reading a treatise, not a novel. But it also captures perfectly that late adolescent experience of discovering that the world is bigger than what you grew up with and trying to figure out what you want to believe and where you want to fit.”

I did not like Bonds of Brass. It got a lot of “Finn/Poe” buzz, but it wasn’t to my taste. Also, there’s no hea at the end of this book – assuming that will come at the end of the trilogy. Here’s a bit of my GR review:

“2.5 stars? It’s not a terrible book but I just could NOT suspend disbelief enough to get past the plot holes, unbelievable characters and lackluster world building to enjoy the action sequences.

Reading it, I was alternately annoyed with and baffled by the actions of the narrator, Ettian. I kept hoping there was some big plot twist coming to upend everything and make it all make sense. And then the big plot twist came and it didn’t explain anything and it just made me really mad at the author.

The biggest similarity to the most recent Star Wars movies is that it’s full of action and spectacle but it doesn’t make a lot of sense if you think about it too much. (I say that as a huge fan of the Star Wars movies.)”
