  • The Afterlife of Holly Chase

The Afterlife of Holly Chase by Cynthia Hand

RECOMMENDED: The Afterlife of Holly Chase by Cynthia Hand is $1.99! This is a retelling of A Christmas Carol and Carrie gave it an A-:

I was truly surprised and delighted by how this story ended up. It solved the ethical problems I had with the romance, it was clever, and I worked perfectly with everything that led up to it. I will be adding this to my holiday book box to read again next year!

On Christmas Eve five years ago, Holly was visited by three ghosts who showed her how selfish and spoiled she’d become. They tried to convince her to mend her ways.

    She didn’t.

    And then she died.

Now she’s stuck working for the top-secret company Project Scrooge–as the latest Ghost of Christmas Past.

Every year, they save another miserly grouch. Every year, Holly stays frozen at seventeen while her family and friends go on living without her. So far, Holly’s afterlife has been miserable.

But this year, everything is about to change. . . .

  • The Key to Happily Ever After

The Key to Happily Ever After by Tif Marcelo

The Key to Happily Ever After by Tif Marcelo is $2.99 at Amazon! My book club was able to talk to Tif about this book and how it changed throughout the editing process. Originally, it was supposed to be a trilogy of contemporary romances with each sister as the heroine. However, the final iteration is more women’s fiction.

A charming romantic comedy about three sisters who are struggling to keep the family wedding planning business afloat—all the while trying to write their own happily-ever-afters in the process.

All’s fair in love and business.

The de la Rosa family and their wedding planning business have been creating happily ever afters in the Washington, DC area for years, making even the most difficult bride’s day a fairytale. But when their parents announce their retirement, the sisters—Marisol, Janelyn, and Pearl—are determined to take over the business themselves.

But the sisters quickly discover that the wedding business isn’t all rings and roses. There are brides whose moods can change at the drop of a hat; grooms who want to control every part of the process; and couples who argue until their big day. As emotions run high, the de la Rosa sisters quickly realize one thing: even when disaster strikes—whether it’s a wardrobe malfunction or a snowmageddon in the middle of a spring wedding—they’ll always have each other.

Perfect for fans of the witty and engaging novels of Amy E. Reichert and Susan Mallery, The Key to Happily Ever After is a fresh romantic comedy that celebrates the crucial and profound power of sisterhood.

  • Misleading the Duke

Misleading the Duke by A.S. Fenichel

Misleading the Duke by A.S. Fenichel is 99c! This is the second in the Wallflowers of West Lane series and features a heroine betrothed to a spy. If you like romances where an engaged couple are strangers and come to know and love each other over time, this seems like the book for you.

Finishing school failed to turn them into proper society ladies. Now these four friends vow to remain single until they find suitors worthy of their love and devotion…

Betrothed to a man she has barely met, Lady Faith Landon calls upon her three best friends—the self-proclaimed Wallflowers of West Lane—to help uncover the secrets of her mysterious fiancé. Her suspicions are aroused when she learns that he has recently returned from France. Is he a traitor to his country? The truth is quite the opposite. Nicholas Ellsworth, Duke of Breckenridge, is a secret agent for the English Crown who has just completed a risky mission to infiltrate Napoleon’s spy network.

After his adventures, Nicholas craves the peace and quiet of the country and settling into domestic bliss with his bride. Until he discovers Faith’s deceptive investigation. How can he wed a woman who doesn’t trust him? But a powerful spark has ignited between Nicholas and Faith that could bring about a change of heart. Faith seizes her second chance to prove to Nicholas that they are a true love match but his past catches up with them when three French spies come to exact revenge. Surviving rather than wooing has become the order of the day.

  • Fortuna

    Fortuna by K.S. Merbeth

Fortuna by Kristyn Merbeth is $1.99! I mentioned this on a previous Hide Your Wallet, because I’m all for a family of smugglers. However, reviews on Goodreads mention the pacing could have been much better.

A rebellious young woman leads a family of smugglers who become unwittingly entangled in a galactic war in this first book of an action-packed space opera trilogy.

There’s only one thing Scorpia Kaiser wants in the whole galaxy: to finally own Fortuna, the ship she pilots and the only home she’s ever known. But when it becomes clear her predecessor – the family matriarch – has been secretly dealing with various planetary governments, Scorpia realizes that her own family may be the reason the system’s five planets are headed toward a devastating war.

Lies, manipulation, and profit are all she’s ever been taught, but as she ascends into her new position Scorpia finds she has the chance to change everything. Yet even as she takes on more responsibility for the family’s fate, fortune and influence, she is not at all sure she’s ready for it – nor that she has the support of her crew, particularly her brother and rival Corvus.

To stop the war, she’ll have to unite her family and unravel the chaos they’ve left in their wake.
