I’ve been mostly into darker stuff this year (gee, I wonder why!) But Alexis Hall’s Boyfriend Material had some hilarious moments that made me smile.

  2. sandral says:

I keep re-reading the Hidden Legacy series by Ilona Andrews. High stress levels due to the holidays and other stuff!

  3. Cristie says:

It was Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall for me. Cackled my way through the entire book.

  4. Heather M says:

    Sparkly! Pretty!

I’ve had quite a bit of trouble reading in general this year and not a lot of books have made me laugh or smile (Boyfriend Material did, but lots of people are picking Boyfriend Material), so I’m gonna cheat a bit mostly because I want people to know about this thing and maybe if you read my comment you will seek it out and enjoy it.

The media that made me happiest this year was a Thai Boys’ Love series called 2gether (and its sequel, Still 2gether). It made me laugh like a crazy person when I didn’t think I had many laughs left in 2020. And it’s swoony as hell. I won’t go into it too much, but it centers on a fake relationship trope. It’s on youtube (legally) with English subtitles.

And technically it IS a book too…just a book in Thai, so I have not read it.

  5. Andrea2 says:

I re-read the Rockliffe series by Stella Riley and just finished her latest work, “Midwinter Magic: A Rockliffe Novella,” which was released on December 6, 2020. All books in the series made me smile and the novella was just perfect!
An added bonus is that Alex Wyndham narrates the series (all but the novella which isn’t available in audio just.)

  6. Lisa M says:

Evvie Drake Starts Over by Linda Holmes

  7. genie says:

Spoiler Alert by Olivia Dade. I actually laughed in places. My face hurt from smiling. I think I’m going to read it again ASAP.

  8. Tina says:

Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall — one of the funniest books I’ve ever read and it was just what I needed in 2020!

  9. Sarah s. says:

How to Become a Federal Criminal. It’s the funniest book I’ve read in years.

  10. Abigail says:

“Mythos” and “Heroes” by Stephen Fry (audiobooks). Stephen Fry retells the Greek myths with his signature wit and general gloriousness. SO. DAMN. DELIGHTFUL.

  11. Crystal says:

Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall. The group chat names alone…

  12. Joy Kennedy says:

Looking thru my kindle I couldn’t find much hilariously funny. I have been re-reading Shelly Laurenston’s books, especially the ones with bear shifters. I did find a delightful short story by Ilona Andrews which you can get on their website called “A Mere Formality” where as part of a ploy to buy time the prospective bride negotiates the marriage contract by asking whether she will be required to…..and proceeds to list every possible sexual act she and her team can think of. Very funny.

  13. Violet Bick says:

@Heather M: Thanks for the recommendation! I’ll definitely seek it out!

My pick is The Duke in Shining Armor by Loretta Chase, which I read in preparation for Ten Things I Hate About the Duke.

  14. EG says:

I laughed a lot through Boyfriend Material, but also cried, but mostly laughed.

  15. PRETTY FACE by Lucy Parker has some fun banter that made me smile. I’m looking forward to checking out the rest of the series.

  16. Ashley Weiss says:

    The Grammarians by Cathleen Schine

  17. Vicki says:

Ice Cream Lover by Jackie Lau hit the spot for me. Ditto Mr. Hot Shot CEo by the same author. In general, her books leave me feeling good.

  18. Janet S says:

The House on the Cerulean Sea. Oh and Murderbot again.

  19. susan says:

I have been reading Amy Andrews Sydney Smoke rugby series and there are always little moments of laughs.

And I ALWAYS want a bag the zips closed. Magnets just don’t cut it.

  20. Laura says:

    love lettering

  21. Ellie M says:

A Dangerous Kind of Lady by Mia Vincy.

  22. Kareni says:

    Happy Hanukkah!

I read My Christmas Number One by Leonie Mack on the recommendation of @DiscoDollyDeb and it made me happy.

  23. Miss Louisa says:

I have read a couple series by Penny Reid, and re-read the shopping series by Julia Kent. Jackie Lau is a treasure who makes me want to spend my winters in Canada eating pie and ice cream.

  24. Laurel says:

Loathe at First Sight by Suzanne Park

  25. LaurieF says:

Murder on Cold Street by Sherry Thomas. The fifth book in a fantastic series brings joy to my heart and a smile to my face. Chef’s kiss 🙂

  26. Sara says:

I just started Gideon the Ninth! I was not expecting it to be so funny

  27. Rachel Smoka-Richardson says:

The middle grade novel The List of Things That Will Not Change made me cry happy tears.

  28. Aly P says:

It’s so pink!!! It would be perfect for an ebook reader and phone and the essentials 😀

  29. MARY MORLEY says:

Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall! This book was fantastic. Laugh out loud funny and also heartwrenching at times.

  30. Julie B. says:

The Flat Share By Beth O’Leary. It took forever to get a copy from my library but it was so worth it! It made me smile when I needed something to be happy about after we started working remotely.

  31. Rae Alley says:

Sparkle Witch (series) – light, frothy goodness

  32. Jen M says:

I re-read the Bridgertons this past summer, and I really loved giggling and swooning my way through those stories again! Can’t wait for the show!

  33. Miriam Vega-Rosado says:

Mr Fixer Upper by Lucy Score.

  34. Lori says:

Holidaze by Christina Lauren! Such a delightful read; I laughed out loud more than once to the confusion of my cats.

  35. Janet says:

Denise Williams’ How To Fail At Flirting is pure joy.

  36. Christi says:

The Intimacy Experiment by Rosie Danan which comes out next year and was absolute perfection. I was just delighted the whole time reading.

  37. hope-and-memory says:

Courtney Milan’s The Duke Who Didn’t!

  38. Cindy says:

    Wishful Drinking by Carrie Fisher
Made me smile, “But it isn’t all sweetness and light sabres.”

  39. Carmin says:

Given the year, I’ve avoided reading sad or angsty. ROMeANTICALLY CHALLENGED was fantastic – a great distraction and a fun read.

  40. Stefanie E. says:

Penny Reid’s books make me guffaw and snort so I’m partial. Happily Ever Ninja got me the most because I’ve been married for a bit with children like the characters who are having their second chance and the giggles came from way deep.
