Evvie Drake Starts Over

RECOMMENDED: Evvie Drake Starts Over by Linda Holmes is $2.99! We have a lovely guest squee for this one:
This is the perfect breezy summer read. It is also the perfect fresh spring read, the perfect crisp fall read, and the perfect cozy winter read. I hope I’ve adequately conveyed that I have so many feelings about this delightful book – and they are all good.
In a small town in Maine, recently widowed Eveleth “Evvie” Drake rarely leaves her house. Everyone in town, including her best friend, Andy, thinks grief keeps her locked inside, and she doesn’t correct them. In New York, Dean Tenney, former major-league pitcher and Andy’s childhood friend, is struggling with a case of the “yips”: he can’t throw straight anymore, and he can’t figure out why. An invitation from Andy to stay in Maine for a few months seems like the perfect chance to hit the reset button.
When Dean moves into an apartment at the back of Evvie’s house, the two make a deal: Dean won’t ask about Evvie’s late husband, and Evvie won’t ask about Dean’s baseball career. Rules, though, have a funny way of being broken–and what starts as an unexpected friendship soon turns into something more. But before they can find out what might lie ahead, they’ll have to wrestle a few demons: the bonds they’ve broken, the plans they’ve changed, and the secrets they’ve kept. They’ll need a lot of help, but in life, as in baseball, there’s always a chance–right up until the last out.

The Thief by Michele Hauf is $1.99 at Amazon! It’s not being price-matched anywhere else. Elyse mentioned this on a previous Hide Your Wallet and was interested in the hero and heroine being thieves after the same score. It is on the shorter side though, clocking in at a little less than 200 pages.
The Elite Crimes Unit works behind the scenes of Interpol—and employs some of the world’s most talented criminal minds. Because as everyone knows, it takes a thief to catch a thief—or to seduce one . . .
The old farmhouse in the French countryside is a refuge for former jewel thief Josephine Deveraux. Admittedly, there aren’t many men in the vicinity, but she has her cat to cuddle up with. It’s a far cry from her former life, constantly running from the law, and she’s enjoying her peace . . . until the intruder in the three-piece suit tackles her. He wants her back in the game, helping with a heist—and he’s not above making threats to get his way.
Little does Josephine know that notorious—and notoriously charming—thief, Xavier Lambert, is after the very same 180-carat prize she’s being blackmailed to steal. To his chagrin, he’s doing it not as a free agent, but as a member of the Elite Crimes Unit—the team he was forced to join when his brilliant career came to a sudden end. And little does Xavier know that his comeback is about to include a stranger’s kiss, a stinging slap, and a hunt for missing treasure—along with the infuriatingly sexy woman who’s outfoxing him . . .

More Than You Know by Jennifer Gracen is $1.99! This is book one in The Harrisons contemporary romance series. This one features a romance between a hotel owner and a lounge singer, which I think is an interesting pairing. I believe this one has an older heroine who is in her 40s, which readers liked, but some really disliked the hero.
Hotel owner Dane Harrison, middle brother of a wealthy Long Island family, needs a lounge singer for his new luxury property. With her stunning voice and amazing curves, Julia Shay is perfect. She also seems be the only woman in New York City who isn’t falling at Dane’s feet. And despite her feisty attitude and his rule against workplace affairs, he wants her—in his arms, in his bed, anywhere and everywhere.
Julia loves her new job, and she knows better than to think she can keep it and Dane. Even if he wasn’t her boss, Julia’s painful history has given her ample reason to steer clear of rich, powerful charmers. Still, their chemistry is unlike anything she’s known, and when it becomes too much to resist, they agree to one no-strings night together. But instead of quenching the fire, the intense encounter only proves how much they have to lose—or win…

RECOMMENDED: The Book of Koli by M.R. Carey is $2.99! This is the first book in a new trilogy and part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals, which also includes some romance. Carrie read this one and had this to say on a previous Hide Your Wallet:
Character driven and imaginative. Will never regard a tree in the same way again.
Beyond the walls of the small village of Mythen Rood lies an unrecognizable world. A world where overgrown forests are filled with choker trees and deadly vines and seeds that will kill you where you stand. And if they don’t get you, one of the dangerous shunned men will.
Koli has lived in Mythen Rood his entire life. He knows the first rule of survival is that you don’t venture beyond the walls.
What he doesn’t know is – what happens when you aren’t given a choice?
The first in a gripping new trilogy, The Book of Koli charts the journey of one unforgettable young boy struggling to find his place in a chilling post-apocalyptic world. Perfect for readers of Station Eleven and Annihilation.

Rosalind James’ Just Say Yes is free today.
Evvie Drake was a sleeper for me. I went into it with low expectations and ended up loving it! It’s one of those books, where I think about the characters at random times and hope they are doing well.
@Bre I also think about the characters and wasn’t expecting to be as immersed in their world as I was. This is the only contemporary romance I’ve read in years and only picked it because I enjoy Linda Holmes’ online pop culture content. I spent a lovely summer afternoon with Evvie Drake and think her story would be a great tonic for a gray December afternoon.
Also–Mimi Matthews’ The Viscount and Vicars Daughter is free today (12/6) via Kindle Unlimited.
Love The Harrisons’ series by Jennifer Gracen.
I found Evvie Drake to be too mellow and staid for my tastes. I think I need more conflict and tension to enjoy whatever I’m reading, even if it’s a romance.
