  • How to Bake Everything

How to Bake Everything by Mark Bittman

How to Bake Everything by Mark Bittman is $4.99 at select vendors! This is part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals and if you’ve ever seen a Bittman book in person, you’ll know this is a pretty decent price. Those things are massive in size and are normally $35-$40.

In the most comprehensive book of its kind, Mark Bittman offers the ultimate baker’s resource. Finally, here is the simplest way to bake everything, from American favorites (Crunchy Toffee Cookies, Baked Alaska) to of-the-moment updates (Gingerbread Whoopie Pies).

It explores global baking, too: Nordic ruis, New Orleans beignets, Afghan snowshoe naan. The recipes satisfy every flavor craving thanks to more than 2,000 recipes and variations: a pound cake can incorporate polenta, yogurt, ricotta, citrus, hazelnuts, ginger, and more. New bakers will appreciate Bittman’s opinionated advice on essential equipment and ingredient substitutions, plus extensive technique illustrations. The pros will find their creativity unleashed with guidance on how to adapt recipes to become vegan, incorporate new grains, improvise tarts, or create customized icebox cakes using a mix-and-match chart.

Demystified, deconstructed, and debunked—baking is simpler and more flexible than you ever imagined.

  • The Submissive

The Submissive by Tara Sue Me

The Submissive by Tara Sue Me is $1.99! I’ve read other BDSM romances by this author and really enjoyed them, but have no experiences with this one as I’m too impatient to read a series that follows the same couple over multiple books. Have you read this one?

The first in Tara Sue Me’s seductive and scandalous series that has enthralled millions…

Abby King has a secret fantasy.

New York knows Nathaniel West as the brilliant and handsome CEO of West Industries, but Abby knows he’s more: a sexy and skilled dominant who is looking for a new submissive. Yearning to experience a world of pleasure beyond her simple life as a librarian, Abby offers herself to Nathaniel, to fulfill her most hidden desires.

After only one weekend with the Master, Abby knows she needs more, and fully submits to Nathaniel’s terms. But despite the pleasure he takes in Abby’s willing spirit, the Nathaniel hidden behind the rules remains cold and distant.

As Abby falls deeper into his tantalizing world of power and passion, she fears that Nathaniel’s heart may be beyond her reach—and that her own might be beyond saving…

  • Sawbones

    Sawbones by Melissa Lenhardt

Sawbones by Melissa Lenhardt is 99c! This is the first in a historical fiction series that I remember reading through my local library. It has my personal recommendation. And Lenhardt’s newest release Heresy was a Hide Your Wallet pick.

Outlander meets post-Civil War unrest in this fast-paced historical debut.

When Dr. Catherine Bennett is wrongfully accused of murder, she knows her fate likely lies with a noose unless she can disappear. Fleeing with a bounty on her head, she escapes with her maid to the uncharted territories of Colorado to build a new life with a new name. Although the story of the murderess in New York is common gossip, Catherine’s false identity serves her well as she fills in as a temporary army doctor. But in a land unknown, so large and yet so small, a female doctor can only hide for so long.

  • Spin the Dawn

Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim

Spin the Dawn by Elizabeth Lim is $1.99! This YA fantasy was featured on Cover Awe and was marketed as Mulan meets Project Runway. Which HELLO! It’s high on my own TBR pile, but honestly, I haven’t been reading much this year for obvious reason.

Project Runway meets Mulan in this sweeping YA fantasy about a young girl who poses as a boy to compete for the role of imperial tailor and embarks on an impossible journey to sew three magic dresses, from the sun, the moon, and the stars.

Maia Tamarin dreams of becoming the greatest tailor in the land, but as a girl, the best she can hope for is to marry well. When a royal messenger summons her ailing father, once a tailor of renown, to court, Maia poses as a boy and takes his place. She knows her life is forfeit if her secret is discovered, but she’ll take that risk to achieve her dream and save her family from ruin. There’s just one catch: Maia is one of twelve tailors vying for the job.

Backstabbing and lies run rampant as the tailors compete in challenges to prove their artistry and skill. Maia’s task is further complicated when she draws the attention of the court magician, Edan, whose piercing eyes seem to see straight through her disguise.

And nothing could have prepared her for the final challenge: to sew three magic gowns for the emperor’s reluctant bride-to-be, from the laughter of the sun, the tears of the moon, and the blood of stars. With this impossible task before her, she embarks on a journey to the far reaches of the kingdom, seeking the sun, the moon, and the stars, and finding more than she ever could have imagined.

Steeped in Chinese culture, sizzling with forbidden romance, and shimmering with magic, this young adult fantasy is pitch-perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas or Renée Ahdieh.

  1. Kit says:

I read The Submissive a few years ago around the time all the fifty shades copycats came out. I actually enjoyed it a lot more than 50SOG as from the start the heroine is a novice submissive looking for a dominant, so there was no abusive non consensual elements. The series goes on for quite a few books (all with those bland greyish covers) but this book is a complete story with no cliffhangers.

  2. Elizabeth says:

Just a head’s up, there are some serious content warnings for Sawbones. I ended up DNF’ing this book about halfway through because of what happens to the protagonist. I also thought the depictions of the Indigenous population the protagonist encounters were pretty problematic. YMMV, but I would not recommend Sawbones.

  3. SusanH says:

Nora Roberts’ Face the Fire is a $1.99 daily deal on Kindle. It’s the third and final book in her Three Sisters trilogy, so I wouldn’t start with it. That series is comfort reading for me, and I’m happy to finally have it all in ebook since my paper copies are falling apart.

  4. Sue C says:

@Elizabeth, thank you for the warnings. I was intrigued by Sawbones but this gives me pause.

  5. Karen D says:

I’ve read the first two books in the Sawbones series. They are definitely violent in places and yes, the depiction of the Native Americans is problematic. I’ve really had no desire to read the third one.

  6. Lizzy says:

I one clicked Sawbones but now feel regret after reading the comments. Ah well, only out $.99

  7. BKMeggie says:

I am perpetually grateful for the comments of the Bitchery – anytime a book looks interesting to me I immediately check to see what you folks have to say about it. Thanks for saving me from Sawbones, which sounded interesting but as per the comments would probably have just pissed me off.

  8. Lisa F says:

Whoof, thanks for the warnings on Sawbones, everyone!

  9. wingednike says:

I listened to Spin the Dawn on audio. From what i remember:

*It ends on a cliffhanger. The sequel came out this year

*There’s a tone shift part-way through the book. Project Runway is only in the first part. The rest is a traveling adventure

*I liked it enough to put the sequel on my library wishlist

  10. Sydneysider says:

Thanks for the warnings – I was about to one click and am glad to have saved the $.99 for a CW-free read that doesn’t have problematic depictions of Indigenous people! Thanks Bitchery 🙂

  11. Violet Bick says:

@wingednike: Thanks for the info about Spin the Dawn. I was interested in Project Runway, so now I’ll be prepared for the shift. Luckily I also like a traveling adventure!

  12. Msb says:

Seriously? An author called Tara “Sue Me”?
