  • Moonlighter

    Moonlighter by Sarina Bowen

Moonlighter by Sarina Bowen is 99c! This is the first book in Bowen’s The Company series, which takes on a more romantic suspense feel that the Brooklyn Bruisers series. I’m not a big romantic suspense writer, but the description of a “growly hero” has be interested.

Five nights. Two adversaries. Only one bed in their hotel room.

I’m at the height of my hockey career. Yet my arrogant brother is always trying to recruit me into the family business: a global security company so secretive that I don’t even know its name.

Pass, thanks. I don’t need a summer job.

But the jerk ambushes me with a damsel in distress. That damsel is Alex, the competitive, sassy girl I knew when we were kids. Now she’s a drop-dead gorgeous woman in deep trouble.

So guess who’s on a flight to Hawaii?

It’s going to be a long week in paradise. My job is keeping Alex safe, while her job is torturing me with her tiny bikinis. Or maybe we’re torturing each other. It’s all snark and flirting until the threat against Alex gets serious. And this jock must become her major league protector.

Moonlighter is a stand-alone novel for Brooklyn Bruisers team member Eric Bayer. No cliffhangers, no prior experience necessary. Expect: a growly hero, a lady boss with no time for his attitude, and a war of wills and hormones. Bonus: a hunk wearing a baby in a sling.

  • Dear Enemy

    Dear Enemy by Kristen Callihan

Dear Enemy by Kristen Callihan is $1.99! This is a standalone enemies to lovers contemporary romance. It was released back in March and published by Amazon’s romance imprint. Unfortunately, that means it isn’t available at other vendors, but is in the KU offerings.

From New York Times bestselling author Kristen Callihan comes a smart, emotional contemporary romance about finding love with the most unlikely of people.

As kids, they hated each other. Macon Saint was beautiful, but despite his name, Delilah knew he was the devil. That he dated her slightly evil sister, Samantha, was no picnic either. When they broke up, it was a dream come true: Delilah never had to see him again.

Ten years later, her old enemy sends a text.

Delilah’s sister has stolen a valuable heirloom from Macon, now a rising Hollywood star, and he intends to collect his due. One problem: Sam has skipped town.

Sparks still sizzle between Macon and Delilah, only this heat feels alarmingly like unwanted attraction. But Delilah is desperate to keep her weak-hearted mother from learning of her sister’s theft. So she proposes a deal: she’ll pay off the debt by being Macon’s personal chef and assistant.

It’s a recipe for disaster, but Macon can’t stop himself from accepting. Even though Delilah clearly hates him, there’s something about her that feels like home. Besides, they’re no longer kids, and what once was a bitter rivalry has the potential to be something sweeter. Something like forever.

  • Jade City

    Jade City by Fonda Lee

Jade City by Fonda Lee is $2.99! This adult fantasy novel incredibly violent, according to reviews. But readers loved the world building and threads of mythology weaved into the story. To be honest, the book sounds intense and awesome. It has a 4-star rating on Goodreads.

JADE CITY is a gripping Godfather-esque saga of intergenerational blood feuds, vicious politics, magic, and kungfu.

The Kaul family is one of two crime syndicates that control the island of Kekon. It’s the only place in the world that produces rare magical jade, which grants those with the right training and heritage superhuman abilities.

The Green Bone clans of honorable jade-wearing warriors once protected the island from foreign invasion–but nowadays, in a bustling post-war metropolis full of fast cars and foreign money, Green Bone families like the Kauls are primarily involved in commerce, construction, and the everyday upkeep of the districts under their protection.

When the simmering tension between the Kauls and their greatest rivals erupts into open violence in the streets, the outcome of this clan war will determine the fate of all Green Bones and the future of Kekon itself.

  1. Lee says:

Moonlighter is one of my very favorite Sarina Bowen novels. I usually like Kristen Callihan, but I am hesitant about her new book since I am not a fan of “bully” books.

  2. CarolynM says:

Good lord, I have all these sale books! And they’re all worth the money spent too.

  3. Meg says:

I had huge reservations going into Dear Enemy, but in the end, I loved it. Yes, there’s major bullying, but Callahan did a miraculous job of making it all work.

  4. DiscoDollyDeb says:

Georgette Heyer’s Regency classic, THE GRAND SOPHY, is a $1.99 KDD today. Also, one of my favorite books of the year, Leonie Mack’s MY CHRISTMAS NUMBER ONE (a lovely slow-burn between two musicians) is 99-cents in the Kindle Store today.

  5. Ruth L says:

Coincidentally, I just finished Moonlighter (damn, paid full price, too). I would say the suspense plot line is the impetus to the romance but is secondary to the romance. Be warned that the suspense plot is not resolved and continues though the second book (Loverboy) and presumably won’t be resolved until the third book (as yet unannounced). Trigger warning: there is one (off screen) incident of partner violence. The hero is a hockey player but there isn’t a significant amount of actual hockey. The heroine’s situation was also plot element in “Brooklynaire.”

Sarina Bowen is high on my “buy when I have digital credit” list. Her characters are all fully fleshed and often flawed — there aren’t many romances where the hero is a recovering heroin addict, for example.

  6. LML says:

Mmm. My Christmas Number One. D3, I’m so glad you recommended that book earlier this year.

  7. SusanH says:

I really liked My Christmas Number One, and I’m happy to add to my growing collection of Sarina Bowen books. She’s become one of my favorite contemporary authors.

I am a huge Heyer fan, and The Grand Sophy is wonderful in a lot of ways, but I always feel it should come with a CW for a really unpleasant scene involving an offensively stereotyped Jewish moneylender. It’s a pretty unnecessary scene, so readers could always skip that chapter and not really lose anything.

  8. Lisa F says:

The Jemisin is my favorite of this batch!

  9. SusanK says:

The Uptown Collection by Ruby Lang is on sale for $2.99!

  10. Star says:

The crazy thing about the Inheritance Trilogy is that as good as it is, it’s easily the least of Jemisin’s oeurve! It was her debut, and she’s only gotten stronger since. My friends and I are in general agreement that the second book is the strongest.

In all honesty, I absolutely hated the third book, but since the reasons for that are largely metaphysical/philosophical, I still strongly recommend the trilogy. There aren’t too many authors out there whose work is so strong that I’d recommend even the books I hated, but Jemisin really is that good.

  11. cleo says:

@Star – Jemisin is one of those authors that I keep meaning to read but haven’t. Is this trilogy a good starting point or would you recommend starting with newer work?

  12. Neile says:

@cleo – the trilogy is definitely the best start if you’re coming from the romance genre. It’s where I started.

@Lee – I agree with @Meg that Dear Enemy worked for me. I’m also not a fan of bully romances in general.

  13. I_Simon says:

Thanks for the heads up, SusanK. I’ve had my eye on the Lang books for awhile now.

  14. Star says:

@cleo – I’m a fantasy reader first, romance reader second, but I agree with @neile that the trilogy is the best place to start, partly if you’re coming from romance and partly just because then if you like it and want to read more, you’re reading up the trajectory as she gets even better. She started her career already on a high note, but each of her projects has been not only technically more advanced, but also significantly existentially deeper and weightier, and personally I find it jarring to go backwards through an author’s work when they’re working on such a steep curve up. If that makes sense?

That’s the other impressive thing about Jemisin, though. It’s not just that she was incredibly talented to start with, although she was; she also manages to be on a completely new level with every new project she puts out. Most authors improve much more gradually than she has.

  15. Sue says:

Reading Sarina Bowen’s Moonlighter right after I read Angelina Lopez’s Lush Money is how I realized I love a billionaire/millionaire heroine and how very much I wish this were more of a thing. Tired of alphahole billionaire heroes! Bring on the incredibly competent and slightly irritated billionaire heroines!

  16. Ruth L says:

@Sue — did you read the Bluewater Billionaire series? A series about four female billionaires. Not only are they billionaires, but they are a good example of strong females who are friends, support each other and aren’t competitive. And they are a little whimsical at times.

  17. devra says:

i had to DNF ‘dear enemy’. the bully aspect was too much for me and it carried on into their adult relationship in ways that made me uncomfortable. A+ banter if you could overlook that, so YMMV, but i couldn’t.

  18. Sue says:

@Ruth L — WHAT. WHAT!!!!! NO, I had NOT read those and now I have 4 books to read oh happy dayyy thank you Ruth L!
