  • The Switch

    The Switch by Beth O'Leary

RECOMMENDED: The Switch by Beth O’Leary is $2.99! Catherine read this one and gave it an A:

It’s a very gentle, wholesome sort of book. I read it last week when I was sick, and it was really the perfect book to curl up with if one is under the weather.

Eileen is sick of being 79.
Leena’s tired of life in her twenties.
Maybe it’s time they swapped places…

When overachiever Leena Cotton is ordered to take a two-month sabbatical after blowing a big presentation at work, she escapes to her grandmother Eileen’s house for some overdue rest. Eileen is newly single and about to turn eighty. She’d like a second chance at love, but her tiny Yorkshire village doesn’t offer many eligible gentlemen.

Once Leena learns of Eileen’s romantic predicament, she proposes a solution: a two-month swap. Eileen can live in London and look for love. Meanwhile Leena will look after everything in rural Yorkshire. But with gossiping neighbours and difficult family dynamics to navigate up north, and trendy London flatmates and online dating to contend with in the city, stepping into one another’s shoes proves more difficult than either of them expected.

Leena learns that a long-distance relationship isn’t as romantic as she hoped it would be, and then there is the annoyingly perfect – and distractingly handsome – school teacher, who keeps showing up to outdo her efforts to impress the local villagers. Back in London, Eileen is a huge hit with her new neighbours, but is her perfect match nearer home than she first thought?

  • Me and White Supremacy

Me and White Supremacy by Layla Saad

Me and White Supremacy by Layla F. Saad is $2.99! If you’re committed to being an anti-racist, this is an important book to have in your library. There was a shortage of physical copies earlier this year, but appears to be back in stock and it includes a coupon for the hardcover edition.

Based on the viral Instagram challenge that captivated participants worldwide, Me and White Supremacy takes readers on a 28-day journey of how to dismantle the privilege within themselves so that they can stop (often unconsciously) inflicting damage on people of color, and in turn, help other white people do better, too.

When Layla Saad began an Instagram challenge called #meandwhitesupremacy, she never predicted it would spread as widely as it did. She encouraged people to own up and share their racist behaviors, big and small. She was looking for truth, and she got it. Thousands of people participated in the challenge, and nearly 100,000 people downloaded the Me and White Supremacy Workbook.

Updated and expanded from the original workbook, Me and White Supremacy, takes the work deeper by adding more historical and cultural contexts, sharing moving stories and anecdotes, and including expanded definitions, examples, and further resources.

Awareness leads to action, and action leads to change. The numbers show that readers are ready to do this work—let’s give it to them.

  • A Duke in Shining Armor

A Duke in Shining Armor by Loretta Chase

RECOMMENDED: A Duke in Shining Armor by Loretta Chase is $3.99! Carrie absolutely loved this one and gave it an A:

I should have been able to read A Duke in Shining Armor in a day. Instead, it took me a week. And do you know why? Because I purposely kept putting it down once I realized that eventually I would RUN OUT OF BOOK. How DARE this book be over?

Not all dukes are created equal. Most are upstanding members of Society. And then there’s the trio known as Their Dis-Graces.

Hugh Philemon Ancaster, seventh Duke of Ripley, will never win prizes for virtue. But even he draws the line at running off with his best friend’s bride. All he’s trying to do is recapture the slightly inebriated Lady Olympia Hightower and return her to her intended bridegroom.

For reasons that elude her, bookish, bespectacled Olympia is supposed to marry a gorgeous rake of a duke. The ton is flabbergasted. Her family’s ecstatic. And Olympia? She’s climbing out of a window, bent on a getaway. But tall, dark, and exasperating Ripley is hot on her trail, determined to bring her back to his friend. For once, the world-famous hellion is trying to do the honorable thing.

So why does Olympia have to make it so deliciously difficult for him . . . ?

  • Silver in the Wood

Silver in the Wood by Emily Tesh

RECOMMENDED: Silver in the Wood by Emily Tesh is $1.99! Catherine loved this one and gave it a squee grade:

I honestly can’t think of a single flaw in the story. If you love fairy tales and myths, and want to read a story that will transport you into the woods and leave you feeling like maybe a part of you is still rooted there, or wandering lost under its branches, then this is the book for you.

“A true story of the woods, of the fae, and of the heart. Deep and green and wonderful.”—New York Times bestselling author Naomi Novik

There is a Wild Man who lives in the deep quiet of Greenhollow, and he listens to the wood. Tobias, tethered to the forest, does not dwell on his past life, but he lives a perfectly unremarkable existence with his cottage, his cat, and his dryads.

When Greenhollow Hall acquires a handsome, intensely curious new owner in Henry Silver, everything changes. Old secrets better left buried are dug up, and Tobias is forced to reckon with his troubled past—both the green magic of the woods, and the dark things that rest in its heart.

I can see why they’re best sellers – looks like I got all of these during this year!

Thanks for turning me onto some wonderful books! Between the reviews, commenters, podcasts and sales, SBTB is where I know I’ll find books I’ll love!

  2. Darlynne says:

As one of those Instagram participants in ME AND WHITE SUPREMACY, I can attest to its impact and importance. I am reminded every day of how profoundly those 28 days changed me and will be grateful forever.

And thank you for these bestselling sales. Heaven forbid I miss adding another great book to my digital TBR of Doom.

  3. Alexandra Adams says:

Silver in the Wood and the one that came before it were So Beautiful. The plot was good, but really the writing was the huge draw for me. Definitely recommend the duo (and I don’t think they should be read out of order), especially if you’re looking for a complete escape from this world.

  4. @Amanda says:

@Alexandra: Silver in the Wood is the first book. The Drowned Country is the follow up.

  5. Lisa F says:

The Switch and the Chase are so worthwhile! Haven’t read MAWS yet but it’s on my list.

  6. Suzy K says:

FYI: Me & White Supremacy is NOT on sale at BN. 🙁 🙁 🙁

  7. Ulrike says:

I *loved* The Flatshare, and I just started The Switch!
