The Lion’s Den

RECOMMENDED: The Lion’s Den by Katherine St. John is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal. Elyse wrote a Lightning Review for this one and gave it an A. Definitely check out her review for a list of triggers to be aware of.
This book is really two mysteries in one, and when they collide it’s a wonderful “ah-ha” moment. I wish I could say more than that, but I don’t want to ruin a single thing for another reader.
A dream vacation on a luxurious yacht turns deadly in this pulse-pounding beach read and perfect book club pick about glamour, friendship, romance, and betrayal on the Riviera.
Belle likes to think herself immune to the dizzying effects of fabulous wealth. But when her best friend, Summer, invites her on a glamorous girls’ getaway to the Mediterranean aboard her billionaire boyfriend’s yacht, the only sensible answer is yes. Belle hopes the trip will be a much-needed break from her stalled acting career and uniquely humiliating waitressing job, but once aboard the luxurious Lion’s Den, it becomes clear that all is not as it seems. The dream vacation quickly devolves into a nightmare as Belle and the handful of other girlfriends Summer has invited are treated more like prisoners than guests by their controlling host, and Belle comes to see Summer for what she truly is: a vicious gold digger who will stop at nothing to get what she wants. Belle soon realizes she’s going to have to keep her wits about her — and her own big secret close to her chest — if she wants to make it off the yacht alive.

Someone to Care by Mary Balogh is $1.99! This is book four in the Westcott series and I thought there was a review for this one, but nope. Sometimes everything just blurs together. If you’re new to Balogh or count her as one of your faves, I highly recommend this guest post.
The legendary New York Times bestselling author is back with a new Westcott novel about the dispossessed countess and wife of the late Earl of Riverdale, who throws all caution to the wind when adventure calls in the form of a handsome aristocrat.
No one has felt the death of the Earl of Riverdale more keenly than his wife, the now dispossessed countess Viola Kingsley. On her way home alone from Bath, Viola meets an adventurous aristocrat at a country inn. Since she is being forced to stay for a day and night, she goes to the village fair with him and impulsively gives in to his suggestion that they run away together for a while–a brief respite from their lives of duty and responsibility. What they discover together is the last thing Viola would have ever expected…

The Raven Tower by Ann Leckie is $2.99! This is part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals and is being price-matched at select vendors. Leckie’s Ancillary Justice is a favorite with Carrie and SBTB commenters. Readers loved the Hamlet-inspired plot, but warn that the book contains first and second POV, which takes some getting used to.
Gods meddle in the fates of men, men play with the fates of gods, and a pretender must be cast down from the throne in this breathtaking first fantasy novel from Ann Leckie, New York Times bestselling author and winner of the Hugo, Nebula, and Arthur C. Clarke Awards.
For centuries, the kingdom of Iraden has been protected by the god known as the Raven. He watches over his territory from atop a tower in the powerful port of Vastai. His will is enacted through the Raven’s Lease, a human ruler chosen by the god himself. His magic is sustained via the blood sacrifice that every Lease must offer. And under the Raven’s watch, the city flourishes.
But the power of the Raven is weakening. A usurper has claimed the throne. The kingdom borders are tested by invaders who long for the prosperity that Vastai boasts. And they have made their own alliances with other gods.
It is into this unrest that the warrior Eolo–aide to Mawat, the true Lease–arrives. And in seeking to help Mawat reclaim his city, Eolo discovers that the Raven’s Tower holds a secret. Its foundations conceal a dark history that has been waiting to reveal itself…and to set in motion a chain of events that could destroy Iraden forever.

The Spinster Bride by Jane Goodger is 99c! This is the fourth book in the Lords and Ladies series. The previous books are on sale for $1.99! Readers say this is a rather sweet historical romance, but that the HEA was bit anticlimactic.
Mr. Charles Norris needs help finding a wife…
For he has the unfortunate habit of falling for each Season’s loveliest debutante, only to have his heart broken when she weds another. Surely Lady Marjorie Penwhistle can help him. She’s sensible, clever, knows the ton, and must marry a peer, which he is not. Since she’s decidedly out of his reach, Charles is free to enjoy her refreshing honesty—and her unexpectedly enticing kisses…
Lady Marjorie Penwhistle doesn’t want a husband…
At least not the titled-but-unbearable suitors her mother is determined she wed. She’d rather stay unmarried and look after her eccentric brother. Still, advising Mr. Norris is a most exciting secret diversion. After all, how hard will it be to match-make someone so forthright, honorable, and downright handsome? It’s not as if she’s in danger of finding Charles all-too-irresistible herself…

The Lion’s Den is fast twisty wonder of a read. Highly recommend.
THE NUN’S TALE by Candace Robb is on sale at Amazon for .99. It’s the third in the medieval Owen Archer series, which I really enjoyed years ago. I don’t believe the order matters, but don’t quote me on that.
The Balogh is showing up for me as $7.99 at Amazon. It was on sale just a weaker so ago (I bought it then) and there was a bit of discussion in the comments about it. Maybe that’s why you thought there was a review?
@Jennifer in FL Amazon’s been doing some weird things with their prices. Mexican Gothic was $2.99 this morning and is 12.99 now. I know this book, too, was on sale last week, so maybe the system got confused.
Has anyone read Spinster Bride?
Highly recommend the Leckie. I was worried about the POV issue but got pulled in to the story quickly enough that I didn’t have time to be bothered.
Meh. The lions den is never on sale here in Australia, and none of my accessible libraries have it (even after I requested it).
$16 is a lot to spend on a new to me author, I tend to only buy books from series/authors I know and use the library to test out new authors and these sort of “hit” books.
The Raven Tower annoyed me, a lot. It seemed to self-conciously try to be clever just to be clever. The second person pov really didn’t work for me. It’s obviously a case of ymmv, so I recommend reading a sample before jumping in. Ancillary Justice is much better, imo.
I enjoyed the Spinster Bride. it was much better than the book description and quite funny. I wasn’t expecting a whole lot and kind of aimlessly picked it up. pleasant surprise.
