Then, Now, Always

Then, Now, Always by Mona Shroff is $1.99! This is a contemporary romance with a secret baby element. I think one our reviewers read this one at some point, because I remember them commenting on our Slack that there were way too many secrets being kept. Have you read this one?

RECOMMENDED: A Hope Divided by Alyssa Cole is 99c at select vendors! This is book 2 in the Loyal League series.
Redheadedgirl gave it an A grade:
Cole’s books are always timely, and yet timeless. She has a solid grounding of how to use history in her plots, and knows exactly what story she wants to tell. I could not put this down…
The Civil War has turned neighbor against neighbor–but for one scientist spy and her philosopher soldier, war could bind them together . . .
For three years of the War Between the States, Marlie Lynch has helped the cause in peace: with coded letters about anti-Rebel uprisings in her Carolina woods, tisanes and poultices for Union prisoners, and silent aid to fleeing slave and Freeman alike. Her formerly enslaved mother’s traditions and the name of a white father she never knew have protected her–until the vicious Confederate Home Guard claims Marlie’s home for their new base of operations in the guerilla war against Southern resistors of the Rebel cause.
Unbeknowst to those under her roof, escaped prisoner Ewan McCall is sheltering in her laboratory. Seemingly a quiet philosopher, Ewan has his own history with the cruel captain of the Home Guard, and a thoughtful but unbending strength Marlie finds irresistible.
When the revelation of a stunning family secret places Marlie’s freedom on the line, she and Ewan have to run for their lives into the hostile Carolina night. Following the path of the Underground Railroad, they find themselves caught up in a vicious battle that could dash their hopes of love–and freedom–before they ever cross state lines.Add to Goodreads To-Read List →

Forbidden Promises by Katee Robert is $2.99! Elyse loved this series and gave this one a B grade. However, it’s the fourth one in The O’Malley’s series and I think they benefit from being read in order. I know the last book relies on setup in previous installments.
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Katee Robert delivers the next book in her sizzling O’Malleys family series, hailed as “The Godfather meets Romeo & Juliet.” FORBIDDEN PROMISES features Sloan O’Malley and her mysterious new next-door neighbor, Jude MacNamara.
Some lines should never be crossed . . . not even for love.
Sloan O’Malley just left her entire world behind-her family, her wealth, and even her real name. For the first time in her life, she’s free. She can live the “normal” life she’s always wanted. A life without fear. But there’s nothing safe about her intensely sexy next-door neighbor.
Jude MacNamara has no room for innocence in his life. Only revenge. Still, he’s never been able to walk away from the forbidden, and Sloan–who is every inch of pure, mouthwatering temptation–has forbidden written all over her. Only after it’s way too late does he discover the real danger: claiming Sloan as his puts a target on her back. To protect her, Jude is willing risk everything . . . and to hell with the consequences.

A Bad Boy for Christmas by Jessica Lemmon is $1.99! This is a contemporary holiday romance with a forced proximity/snowed in plot. Readers loved the hero in this one, but some felt pretty frustrated with the heroine. It has a 4-star rating on Goodreads and is the third book in the Second Chances series.
‘Tis the Season to Be Naughty
Connor McClain knows what he wants. And after four harrowing years in Afghanistan, that’s a quiet life in the lakeside town of Evergreen Cove. But coming home has land mines of its own-the most dangerous of them being long-legged bombshell Faith Garrett. Now getting her into his arms this holiday is going to require more than mistletoe . . .
With a cheating ex behind her, all Faith wants is a relaxing holiday free from man drama. And even though every moment with gorgeous Connor is a sweet temptation, Faith is determined not to give in. But Jack Frost has other plans, and soon Faith and Connor are snowbound in a winter wonderland with only the sparks flying between them to keep them warm. As one hot kiss leads to another, they’ll have to decide if they’re ready to give each other the best gift of all-love.

Although I agree that the O’Malley series should be read in order, I think if you’re going to read any of them out of order, FORBIDDEN PROMISES is it because for the most part it takes place outside the O’Malley world of Boston. All of the other books in the series share an overarching story arc. The whole series is very good.
Holy cats – this really should have been categorized as a “hide your wallet” because – one click, two click, three click, four click, five.
I’m off secret baby romances. There had better be a compelling reason for the secret, like abuse, and if there’s abuse, then why get back together? Especially these days when it’s so easy to track someone down. I particularly don’t like “oh, I can’t tell him it will ruin his life” secret babies. What about your life? What about the baby’s life? That’s not noble self-sacrifice, that’s just stupidity and low self-esteem. “Oh, I love him/it was just a hookup and I don’t want to trap him in a relationship” — yeah, that’s a crock, too. Pay the child support, buddy, and next time be more careful about keeping it wrapped. Do I sound like someone who knew someone in that situation. Why yes, I do!
Too bad, because otherwise this looks like it might be interesting.
A Hope Divided was my favorite of the trilogy, I think I read a library copy, I’m going to use the opportunity to grab my own copy
The Shroff was not good – I got sucked in by the cover and because sometimes secret baby is a catnip of mine (I know, I know, in real life I think it’s icky, in romance novels it gets me), but this one was overly dramatic, the characters were one dimensional, and if I’m not mistaken it’s a clean romance, which I’m fine with in some cases but when you’re talking about a book where we know the characters had sex, hence the secret baby, I just expect some sexy times.
I remember a Bad Boy For Christmas being very good.
And naturally, every person should own the Cole.
Looking for Trouble by Misha Horne is free on Amazon.
Here’s some of my GR review:
3.5 Kinky mm historical with a long, slow burn, culminating in a lot of hot, consensual spanking and sex. This is a departure for MH – not just the historical setting but the fact that it’s closer to erotic romance or even just romance than her usual spanking erotica.
One of MH’s strengths is writing emotionally compelling erotica – even though the set ups are usually ridiculous, the emotions feel real. And that’s true here too – with a more substantial, less ridiculous plot and story.
I’m still not sure if the story serves the sex or the sex serves the story. Would I have read 20 whole chapters of longing, flirting and farm chores without the promise of some hot sex and an honest to goodness consensual woodshed scene? Probably not.
I’d recommend this for anyone who secretly enjoyed the woodshed scenes in old school westerns or if you liked Wicked West by Victoria Dahl. Or (very) patient fans of daddy kink or spanking romances.
I got Then, Now, Always from the library & generally enjoyed it but it read more as women’s fiction to me. The couple don’t get together until nearly the end & their relationship with each other wasn’t really the focus.
A Hope Divided is not on sale anymore sadly.
