  • Soulless

    Soulless by Gail Carriger

RECOMMENDED: Soulless by Gail Carriger is $2.99 and a Kindle Daily Deal! This is the first book by the Parasol Protectorate series and for many readers, this book ignited their love for Carriger’s writing. I loved the first book, especially the heroine, but I agree with other reviewers in that there’s a lot of different things going on that conflict with one another.

Alexia Tarabotti is laboring under a great many social tribulations. First, she has no soul. Second, she’s a spinster whose father is both Italian and dead. Third, she was rudely attacked by a vampire, breaking all standards of social etiquette.

Where to go from there? From bad to worse apparently, for Alexia accidentally kills the vampire—and then the appalling Lord Maccon (loud, messy, gorgeous, and werewolf) is sent by Queen Victoria to investigate.

With unexpected vampires appearing and expected vampires disappearing, everyone seems to believe Alexia responsible. Can she figure out what is actually happening to London’s high society? Will her soulless ability to negate supernatural powers prove useful or just plain embarrassing? Finally, who is the real enemy, and do they have treacle tart?

  • Shadow of the Fox

    Shadow of the Fox

Shadow of the Fox by Julie Kagawa is $1.99! This is a YA fantasy novel inspired by Japanese mythology, and it was recommended by someone in my romance book club. This one has also been mentioned on the site in things like Book Beat and Hide Your Wallet.

    Once Every Thousand Years…

Every millennium, one age ends and another age dawns…and whoever holds the Scroll of a Thousand Prayers holds the power to call the great Kami Dragon from the sea and ask for any one wish. The time is near…and the missing pieces of the scroll will be sought throughout the land of Iwagoto. The holder of the first piece is a humble, unknown peasant girl with a dangerous secret.

Demons have burned the temple Yumeko was raised in to the ground, killing everyone within, including the master who trained her to both use and hide her kitsune shapeshifting powers. Yumeko escapes with the temple’s greatest treasure—one part of the ancient scroll. Fate thrusts her into the path of a mysterious samurai, Kage Tatsumi of the Shadow Clan. Yumeko knows he seeks what she has…and is under orders to kill anything and anyone who stands between him and the scroll.

A wish will be granted and a new age will dawn.

  • The Wolf at the Door

The Wolf at the Door by Charlie Adhara

The Wolf at the Door by Charlie Adhara is $1.99! This is a m/m paranormal romance and was recommended by Aarya in our Underrated Authors & Romances Rec League. Though this one wasn’t Aarya’s favorite in the series, she still really liked this one.

A former FBI agent is partnered with the enemy in this suspenseful male/male shifter romance from debut author Charlie Adhara

Hunting for big bad wolves was never part of Agent Cooper Dayton’s plan, but a werewolf attack lands him in the carefully guarded Bureau of Special Investigations. A new case comes with a new partner: ruggedly sexy werewolf Oliver Park.

Park is an agent of The Trust, a werewolf oversight organization working to ease escalating tensions with the BSI. But as far as Cooper’s concerned, it’s failing. As they investigate a series of mysterious deaths unlike anything they’ve seen, every bone in Cooper’s body is suspicious of his new partner—even when Park proves himself as competent as he is utterly captivating.

When more people vanish, pressure to solve the case skyrockets. And though he’d resolved to keep things professional, Cooper’s friction with Park soon erupts…into a physical need that can’t be contained or controlled. But with a body count that’s rising by the day, werewolves and humans are in equal danger. If Cooper and Park don’t catch the killer soon, one—or both—of them could be the next to go.

  • Imperial Stout

    Imperial Stout by Layla Reyne

Imperial Stout by Layla Reyne is $1.99! This is a gay contemporary romance with some mystery and suspense thrown in. This is a spin-off series of Reyne’s Agents Irish and Whiskey series, and readers seem divided on whether reading that series first is necessary for this one.

Layla Reyne spins off from her pulse-pounding Agents Irish and Whiskey books with Imperial Stout , the first installment in the Trouble Brewing series

It’s a good thing assistant US attorney Dominic Price co-owns a brewery. He could use a cold one. Nic’s star witness has just been kidnapped, his joint operation with the FBI is in jeopardy, his father’s shady past is catching up with him and the hot new special agent in San Francisco is the kind of distraction best handled with a stiff drink.

Kidnap and rescue expert Cameron Byrne has his own ideas about how to handle Nic, but his skills are currently needed elsewhere. The by-the-book FBI agent goes deep undercover as a member of an infamous heist crew in order to save Nic’s witness, break up the crew and close the case before anyone else gets hurt. Nic in particular.

Things heat up when Cam falls for Nic, and the witness falls for Cam. As the crew’s suspicions grow, Cam must decide how far he’s willing to go—and how far into his own dark past he’s willing to dive—to get everyone out alive.

I love Gail Carriger. I always tell people, “Yes, it’s steampunk with vampires and werewolves, but it’s also funny and a bit romantic, so even if you’re not into steampunk and shifters, you should still give it a try.” Carriger is very clear that she believes in female friendship and found family which I find refreshing.

I also like her YA series (Finishing School) and her steamier queer romances written as GL Carriger.

  2. Msb says:

I’m enjoying Carriger’s finishing school books, but loathed Soulless, mostly owing to Carriger’s feeble efforts at pastiche Victorian style. When I found myself underlining the inaccurate word choices and filling the margins with alternatives, I threw the book at the wall. It wasn’t worth the aggro.
Elizabeth Peters’ Amelia Peabody books do much better Victorian, include romance as well as adventure, and are much less violent. And they’re really funny. Peters for me.

  3. sweetfa says:

I really like the cover of the wolf at the door. Sold.

  4. Arijo says:

I have the first 3 books of The Wolf at the Door series and I know I read all 3, but I can’t remember anything about them (o.0) They must be good enough that I bought sequels, but they seem to be somewhat forgettable…

  5. Egged says:

I really enjoyed Soulless but I pretend the sequels don’t exist. Not enough grovel in the world to redeem what happens.

  6. hng23 says:

@Arijo I’ve read all 4 books (#5 comes out next spring). Entertaining, easy reads, well written but unremarkable. Basically, beach reads.
