  • Sweet Magnolias Collection: Volume 1

    Sweet Magnolias Collection: Volume 1 by Sherryl Woods

    Sweet Magnolias Collection: Volume 1 by Sherryl Woods is $2.99! This is the first two books in the small town romance series. It was also made into a Netflix series, which I haven’t watched yet. My brain keeps mixing it up with Steel Magnolias, and I had such a visceral, emotional reaction to that movie that it bleeds over to my impression of Sweet Magnolias.

    Return to the warm, cozy town of Serenity in this collection of classic stories from the Sweet Magnolias series by #1 New York Times bestselling author Sherryl Woods.

    Stealing Home

    There’s been nothing calm about Maddie Townsend’s life since her marriage broke up. But if Maddie is already a tad on edge with everything on her plate, it’s nothing compared to the chaos that ensues when she discovers that her son’s baseball coach has feelings for her—and that the whole town disapproves.

    A Slice of Heaven

    When an eating disorder threatens the life of chef Dana Sue Sullivan’s teenage daughter, she has no choice but to bring Annie’s cheating dad back to Serenity, South Carolina. She tells herself and her friends it’s all about Annie, but Ronnie’s return is a sweet recipe for a new beginning.

  • Dead Witch Walking

    Dead Witch Walking by Kim Harrison

    Dead Witch Walking by Kim Harrison is $1.99 or $2.99 depending on the retailer! This is book one in The Hollows series, which is urban fantasy with a fierce heroine and a lot of opportunities for asskicking. It has a 4+-star average on GoodReads, and is frequently mentioned when readers talk about which urban fantasy series to try next. However, if memory serves me right, I couldn’t get into it myself.

    All the creatures of the night gather in “the Hollows” of Cincinnati, to hide, to prowl, to party . . . and to feed.

    Vampires rule the darkness in a predator-eat-predator world rife with dangers beyond imagining—and it’s Rachel Morgan’s job to keep that world civilized.

    A bounty hunter and witch with serious sex appeal and an attitude, she’ll bring ’em back alive, dead . . . or undead.

  • A Bride in the Bargain

    A Bride in the Bargain by Deeanne Gist

    A Bride in the Bargain by Deeanne Gist is $1.99! Gist is a bit of an auto-buy author for some. This is an American historical and Inspirational romance, though there does seem to be some debate on shelving it as “Inspirational” on Goodreads. Readers say that though what little and tame sexual content is in the book, there is plenty of sexual tension. It has a 4.1-star rating on Goodreads.

    In 1860s Seattle, a man with a wife could secure himself 640 acres of timberland. But because of his wife’s untimely death, Joe Denton finds himself about to lose half of his claim. Still in mourning, his best solution is to buy one of those Mercer girls arriving from the East. A woman he’ll marry in name but keep around mostly as a cook.

    Anna Ivey’s journey west with Asa Mercer’s girls is an escape from the griefs of her past. She’s not supposed to be a bride, though, just a cook for the girls. But when they land, she’s handed to Joe Denton and the two find themselves in a knotty situation. She refuses to wed him and he’s about to lose his land. With only a few months left, can Joe convince this provoking–but beguiling–easterner to be his bride?

  • The Trouble With Witches

    The Trouble With Witches by Kristen Painter

    The Trouble with Witches by Kristen Painter is 99c! This is the first book in the Shadowvale paranormal romance series and I think I’ll probably buy this for myself. If you need an extra nudge, the second book in the series has a vampire hero who owns a bookstore.

    Shadowvale isn’t typical small town America. The sun never shines, the gates decide who enters, magic abounds, and every resident bears some kind of curse.

    No one knows this as well as raven shifter Deacon Evermore, who, like everyone in his family, has a curse. While his position as Shadowvale’s peacekeeper lets him use that curse for good, he’d rather live anywhere else. He stays for his family, but doubts he can last much longer.

    Fledgling witch Emeranth Greer is determined to escape her past and make a fresh start in Shadowvale with the aunt she’s never met. Her aunt and the town prove to be far better than she imagined. There’s no way Em is leaving this magical place. Especially when staying means more time with the handsome Deacon.

    But when Em’s troubled past catches up with her and nearly destroys the romance budding between her and Deacon, her instinct is to run again. Except there’s magic in the mix now and the town won’t let her leave. Only Deacon can save her, but can a cursed man clear her name…or will her history destroy them both?

    With this ring by Cheryl Boleyn and wagon train baby by Linda ford are both free .

  2. Penny says:

    Dead Witch Walking (&the series) haven’t aged super well IMHO. There is just some sad lesbian panic around Rachel’s roomate/vampire-that-can-barely-keep-from-biting-and/or-seducing her. Really, as the series goes on, pretty much every single character finds weirdly Rachel irresistible…

  3. Laurel says:

    I remember meeting Deeanne Gist around the time Tiffany Girl came out, and I can’t remember if she referred to herself as the “bad girl” of inspirational romance, or someone else referred to her that way. I think some readers in that genre find her books racy because of things like the sexual tension mentioned above, but I think most would find them tame. She is a very good writer. I don’t usual read inspirational, but I enjoy her writing. I haven’t read A Bride in the Bargain yet, but I will.

  4. Ellenm says:

    I LOVE Kristen Painter’s Comarre series and I had never even heard of this one! One-clicked it!

  5. DiscoDollyDeb says:

    Naima Simone’s RUTHLESS PRIDE, published by Harlequin Desire, is a 99-cent KDD today. It’s part of the seven-book Dynasties: Seven Sins series. There’s an overarching storyline about the impact of a crime 15 years before, but each book is written by a different author and is a standalone romance. I’ve enjoyed Simone’s category romances in the past and Harlequin doesn’t often have sales on their books, so this was a no-brainer one-click for me.

  6. Jcp says:

    ANyone who likes Deanne gist should try Karen wite Meyer my favorites are more than words can say, head in the clouds (1.99 now) to win her heart and a tailor made bride. If you are looking for contemporary Christian romance try Denise hunter.

  7. Stefanie Magura says:

    @Laurel:

    I saw a review for another author, maybe Tamera Alexander, which complained about that very thing. This baffled me because you have to show attraction between the leads somehow. The thing I like about inspirational historical romances is they seem to be set in comparatively more time periods and places than the mainstream ones. For instance, I don’t know of a historical romance set at the Biltmore other than the one by Deeanne Gist. It’s for this reason that I’m interested in reading it. I live in Asheville and have been to that estate several times.

  8. Carrie G says:

    @ Stefanie Magura I agree about Gists use of unusual settings in her books.

    I’ve read two books by Deeanne Gist and recommend them: IT HAPPENED AT THE FAIR set at the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair, and MAID TO MATCH, the one set on the Biltmore Estate. The way Gist writes the settings makes them come alive.

    Both of these books are well researched, well written, and have a nice romance. The only mentions of faith in the books is completely within period norms and there is no proselytizing, nor are there “morals” the reader is meant to learn. Christian readers will feel comfortable with the representation, but so will non-religious readers. I want to read more by by her, so I’m going to pick up today’s deal.

  9. Stefanie Magura says:

    @Carrie G:

    I’ll keep Gist’s books in mind. The Biltmore has something where tourists can get audio tickets, which are basically headsets, and listen to information about each room of the house as they enter it, so that book will be interesting since I’ve been in that setting. Having said that, I suspect the Biltmore and its surroundings look slightly different today than it did then. Fore one thing, land has been sold off. A building at the college where I work is located on some former Vanderbilt land.

  10. Carrie G says:

    @Stefanie Magura. I meant to add before that I live in NC (Durham) and my brother and family lives in Asheville. My youngest graduated from UNC-Asheville a year ago. Hello fellow NC’er!

  11. LN says:

    I reread the Dead witch walking series (the Hollows) recently and I completely agree with Penny that the whole Rachel and Ivy dynamic is very fucked up and really infuriated me. However the stuff that I really liked about it is still great. First and foremost Jenks. He is definitely the character that prevented me from stopping reading. But also, Big Al, Trent’s redemption ark (and his little magic hats) and the one thing I remembered well from my first read for some unknown reason: the big fear of tomatoes. The magic system also is pretty cool and well thought out.

  12. Riikka says:

    The blurb on that second Sweet Magnolias book is all kind of yikes. Went to GR to check out some reviews and triple yikes! CW’s abound!

  13. Susan says:

    Ruth Saberton’s The Locket is free.
    I’ve never read any of the author’s books, but good reviews on GR and Amazon so I picked it up.

  14. Stefanie Magura says:

    @Carrie G:

    While I was born in Ohio, I lived in SC from the age of one year old to the age of twenty-three when I graduated college, by which point my parents had bought our place in Asheville. So I’ve got it from both sides or states as it were.

  15. Stefanie Magura says:

    @Stefanie Magura:

    Make that twenty-four when I graduated college. I do typically remember my own age, and the year I graduated. LOL 🙂
