Hide Your Wallet

September’s New Releases, Part Two

If you’re new to Hide Your Wallet, this is where we list new releases we’re pretty excited for in the coming month.

Each reviewer has a book maximum (five per person), but we’ve separated HYW into two parts. The first HYW of the month will cover books that release from the 1st to the 14th. The second HYW will cover books released from the 15th to the end of the month.

We also think this will help us feature books from smaller publishers who don’t have buy links up as quickly as the big five.

As always, if we missed any books that you’re particularly looking forward to, tell us all about them in the comments.

  • A Queer New York

A Queer New York by Jen Jack Gieseking

    Author: Jen Jack Gieseking
Released: September 15, 2020 by NYU Press
    Genre: ,

The first lesbian and queer historical geography of New York City

Over the past few decades, rapid gentrification in New York City has led to the disappearance of many lesbian and queer spaces, displacing some of the most marginalized members of the LGBTQ+ community. In A Queer New York, Jen Jack Gieseking highlights the historic significance of these spaces, mapping the political, economic, and geographic dispossession of an important, thriving community that once called certain New York neighborhoods home.

Focusing on well-known neighborhoods like Greenwich Village, Park Slope, Bedford-Stuyvesant, and Crown Heights, Gieseking shows how lesbian and queer neighborhoods have folded under the capitalist influence of white, wealthy gentrifiers who have ultimately failed to make room for them. Nevertheless, they highlight the ways lesbian and queer communities have succeeded in carving out spaces–and lives–in a city that has consistently pushed its most vulnerable citizens away.

Beautifully written, A Queer New York is an eye-opening account of how lesbians and queers have survived in the face of twenty-first century gentrification and urban development.

    Sneezy: Fuck gentrification.

  • Ace

    Ace by Angela Chen

    Author: Angela Chen
Released: September 15, 2020 by Beacon Press
    Genre: ,

An engaging exploration of what it means to be asexual in a world that’s obsessed with sexual attraction, and what we can all learn about desire and identity by using an ace lens to see the world

What exactly is sexual attraction and what is it like to go through the world not experiencing it? What does asexuality reveal about consent, about compromise, about the structures of society? This exceedingly accessible guide to asexuality shows that the issues that aces face—confusion around sexual activity, the intersection of sexuality and identity, navigating different needs in relationships—are conflicts that all of us need to address as we move through the world.

Through interviews, cultural criticism, and memoir, ACE invites all readers to consider big-picture issues through the lens of asexuality, because every place that sexuality touches our world, asexuality does too.

Journalist Angela Chen uses her own journey of self-discovery as an asexual person to unpretentiously educate and vulnerably connect with readers, effortlessly weaving analysis of sexuality and societally imposed norms with interviews of ace people. Among those included are the woman who had blood tests done because she was convinced that “not wanting sex” was a sign of serious illness, and the man who grew up in an evangelical household and did everything “right,” only to realize after marriage that his experience of sexuality had never been the same as that of others. Also represented are disabled aces, aces of color, non-gender-conforming aces questioning whether their asexuality is a reaction against stereotypes, and aces who don’t want romantic relationships asking how our society can make room for them.

Tara: I don’t understand a lot about asexuality, so I’m excited to check this one out and learn more.

  • Last Resort

    Last Resort by Angie Williams

    Author: Angie Williams
Released: September 15, 2020 by Bold Strokes Books
    Genre: , ,

Katie Fausch is content with her single life in San Francisco. When her lovingly pushy family surprises her with a weeklong trip to a singles getaway humorously named Last Resort, Katie only agrees to go if they promise not to nag her about her love life for a year.

Rhys Morgan is a true romantic at heart. She knows there’s more to life than work and wants to find someone to spend hers with. When she discovers that a local resort for singles is having a “lesbian week,” she has to give it a try.

Amid the sand and saltwater of Last Resort, Katie and Rhys endure the enforced dating of total strangers, group socializing where everything that can go wrong actually does, and must answer the ultimate question: What happens if you meet the girl of your dreams but she isn’t looking for a happily ever after?

Shana: This setup is totally my catnip. It sounds like arranged relationship + speed dating.

Tara: I’m a total sucker for vacation romances, so the idea of a vacation romance at a singles’ resort is totally working for me.

  • Longing for You

Longing for You by Jenny Frame

    Author: Jenny Frame
Released: September 15, 2020 by Bold Strokes Books
    Genre: , ,
    Series: Wild for You #2

Alexis Villiers’s best friend, the Principe of the Debrek clan, is newly bonded to Amelia, and Alexis hasn’t felt so alone for centuries. No longer her leader’s closest confidante, Alexis has to face the ever growing longing she has for the Debrek housekeeper, Katie Brekman.

Katie is enjoying her new role as head housekeeper for the Debreks. All she has to worry about is the moody, bad tempered Alexis. Katie has no idea why Alexis dislikes her so much, or why she has refused to feed from her. Certainly Amelia’s theory that Alexis is attracted to Katie couldn’t possibly be true. Katie can’t imagine her showing any kind of emotion, let alone attraction.

When Katie is attacked amid a burgeoning vampire-witch war, Alexis is set to go against everything her clan believes in. Forced to face her longing for Katie, she is torn between opening her heart to a human and abandoning her clan when they need her the most.

Tara: I was super into the first book in this series and then was ready to flip a table when it ended on kind of a cliffhanger. This book follows a different couple and I’m very intrigued to see how they work together, while dealing with all the unresolved plot from book one.

  • The Roommate

    The Roommate by Rosie Danan

    Author: Rosie Danan
Released: September 15, 2020 by Berkley
    Genre: ,

    House Rules:
    Do your own dishes
    Knock before entering the bathroom
Never look up your roommate online

The Wheatons are infamous among the east coast elite for their lack of impulse control, except for their daughter Clara. She’s the consummate socialite: over-achieving, well-mannered, predictable. But every Wheaton has their weakness. When Clara’s childhood crush invites her to move cross-country, the offer is too much to resist. Unfortunately, it’s also too good to be true.

After a bait-and-switch, Clara finds herself sharing a lease with a charming stranger. Josh might be a bit too perceptive—not to mention handsome—for comfort, but there’s a good chance he and Clara could have survived sharing a summer sublet if she hadn’t looked him up on the Internet…

Once she learns how Josh has made a name for himself, Clara realizes living with him might make her the Wheaton’s most scandalous story yet. His professional prowess inspires her to take tackling the stigma against female desire into her own hands. They may not agree on much, but Josh and Clara both believe women deserve better sex. What they decide to do about it will change both of their lives, and if they’re lucky, they’ll help everyone else get lucky too.

    Amanda: This book… *chef’s kiss*

  • Sex, Love, and Letters

Sex, Love, and Letters by Judith Coffin

    Author: Judith Coffin
Released: September 15, 2020 by Cornell University Press
    Genre:

When Judith G. Coffin discovered a virtually unexplored treasure trove of letters to Simone de Beauvoir from Beauvoir’s international readers, it inspired Coffin to explore the intimate bond between the famed author and her reading public. This correspondence, at the heart of Sex, Love, and Letters, immerses us in the tumultuous decades from the late 1940s to the 1970s—from the painful aftermath of World War II to the horror and shame of French colonial brutality in Algeria and through the dilemmas and exhilarations of the early gay liberation and feminist movements. The letters also provide a glimpse into the power of reading and the power of readers to seduce their favorite authors.

The relationship between Beauvoir and her audience proved especially long, intimate, and vexed. Coffin traces this relationship, from the publication of Beauvoir’s acclaimed The Second Sex to the release of the last volume of her memoirs, offering an unfamiliar perspective on one of the most magnetic and polarizing philosophers of the twentieth century. Along the way, we meet many of the greatest writers of Beauvoir’s generation—Hannah Arendt; Dominique Aury, author of The Story of O; François Mauriac, winner of the Nobel Prize and nemesis of Albert Camus; Betty Friedan; and, of course, Jean-Paul Sartre—bringing the electrically charged salon experience to life.

Sex, Love, and Letters lays bare the private lives and political emotions of the letter writers and of Beauvoir herself. Her readers did not simply pen fan letters but, as Coffin shows, engaged in a dialogue that revealed intellectual and literary life to be a joint and collaborative production. “This must happen to you often, doesn’t it?” wrote one. “That people write to you and tell you about their lives?”

Sneezy: From the description: Her readers did not simply pen fan letters but, as Coffin shows, engaged in a dialogue that revealed intellectual and literary life to be a joint and collaborative production. “This must happen to you often, doesn’t it?” wrote one. “That people write to you and tell you about their lives?” Honestly, I don’t know a lot about Simone de Beauvoir, so if she’s a racist or a terf or some other flavour of awful tell me now before I break my heart, but LOOK at that line!! “Dialogue that revealed intellectual and literary life to be a joint and collaborative production.” You won’t even need to prop up the basket with a stick, just leave it in said basket, and I will obligingly tuck myself in.

Graduate student Kyle Swift moved to New York nursing a broken heart. He’d sworn to find someone his own age to crush on (for once). Until he meets a gorgeous, distinguished silver fox hockey player. Despite their intense physical attraction, Kyle has no intention of getting emotionally involved. He’ll teach Eric a few tricks, have some mutually consensual fun, then walk away.

Eric is more than happy to learn anything Kyle brings to the table. And Kyle never expected their friends-with-benefits arrangement to leave him wanting more. Happily-ever-after might be staring them in the face, but it won’t happen if they’re too stubborn to come clean about their feelings.

  • A Deadly Education

A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik

    Author: Naomi Novik
Released: September 29, 2020 by Del Rey
    Genre:
    Series: Scholomance #1

From the New York Times bestselling author of Uprooted and Spinning Silver comes the story of an unwilling dark sorceress who is destined to rewrite the rules of magic.

I decided that Orion Lake needed to die after the second time he saved my life.

Everyone loves Orion Lake. Everyone else, that is. Far as I’m concerned, he can keep his flashy combat magic to himself. I’m not joining his pack of adoring fans.

I don’t need help surviving the Scholomance, even if they do. Forget the hordes of monsters and cursed artifacts, I’m probably the most dangerous thing in the place. Just give me a chance and I’ll level mountains and kill untold millions, make myself the dark queen of the world.

At least, that’s what the world expects me to do. Most of the other students in here would be delighted if Orion killed me like one more evil thing that’s crawled out of the drains. Sometimes I think they want me to turn into the evil witch they assume I am. The school itself certainly does.

But the Scholomance isn’t getting what it wants from me. And neither is Orion Lake. I may not be anyone’s idea of the shining hero, but I’m going to make it out of this place alive, and I’m not going to slaughter thousands to do it, either.

Although I’m giving serious consideration to just one.

With flawless mastery, Naomi Novik creates a heroine for the ages—a character so sharply realized and so richly nuanced that she will live on in hearts and minds for generations to come.

Aarya: NEW NAOMI NOVIK THIS IS NOT A DRILL!!!

  • All We Can Save

All We Can Save by Ayana Elizabeth Johnson

    Author: Ayana Elizabeth Johnson
Released: September 22, 2020 by One World
    Genre:

Provocative and illuminating essays from women at the forefront of the climate movement who are harnessing truth, courage, and solutions to lead humanity forward.

There is a renaissance blooming in the climate movement: leadership that is more characteristically feminine and more faithfully feminist, rooted in compassion, connection, creativity, and collaboration. While it’s clear that women and girls are vital voices and agents of change for this planet, they are too often missing from the proverbial table. More than a problem of bias, it’s a dynamic that sets us up for failure. To change everything, we need everyone.

All We Can Save illuminates the expertise and insights of dozens of diverse women leading on climate in the United States—scientists, journalists, farmers, lawyers, teachers, activists, innovators, wonks, and designers, across generations, geographies, and race—and aims to advance a more representative, nuanced, and solution-oriented public conversation on the climate crisis. These women offer a spectrum of ideas and insights for how we can rapidly, radically reshape society.

Intermixing essays with poetry and art, this book is both a balm and a guide for knowing and holding what has been done to the world, while bolstering our resolve never to give up on one another or our collective future. We must summon truth, courage, and solutions to turn away from the brink and toward life-giving possibility. Curated by two climate leaders, the book is a collection and celebration of visionaries who are leading us on a path toward all we can save.

Sneezy: This is a collection of essays from women of all walks of life who come together to share their solutions for the climate crisis. I’m attracted to this book because the blurb claims that the contributors span multiple generations, places, and races. I will never trust any climate change solutions or activism that is not intersectional, and neither should you, because if it isn’t it won’t work, and we all die anyway. Even if that wasn’t the case, I have no interest in a solution that doesn’t prioritize the most marginalized groups.

    Author: Courtney Milan
    Released: September 22, 2020
    Genre: ,
    Series: Wedgeford Trials #1

Miss Chloe Fong has plans for her life, lists for her days, and absolutely no time for nonsense. Three years ago, she told her childhood sweetheart that he could talk to her once he planned to be serious. He disappeared that very night.

Except now he’s back. Jeremy Wentworth, the Duke of Lansing, has returned to the tiny village he once visited with the hope of wooing Chloe. In his defense, it took him years of attempting to be serious to realize that the endeavor was incompatible with his personality.

All he has to do is convince Chloe to make room for a mischievous trickster in her life, then disclose that in all the years they’ve known each other, he’s failed to mention his real name, his title… and the minor fact that he owns her entire village.

Only one thing can go wrong: Everything.

Aarya: It feels like forever since a new Courtney Milan release!

Shana: Ahhhh! I’m so excited about a new Courtney Milan.

  • Hench

    Hench by Natalie Zina Walschots

    Author: Natalie Zina Walschots
Released: September 22, 2020 by William Morrow
    Genre:

A smart, imaginative, and evocative novel of love, betrayal, revenge, and redemption, told with razor-sharp wit and affection, in which a young woman discovers the greatest superpower—for good or ill—is a properly executed spreadsheet.

Anna does boring things for terrible people because even criminals need office help and she needs a job. Working for a monster lurking beneath the surface of the world isn’t glamorous. But is it really worse than working for an oil conglomerate or an insurance company? In this economy?

As a temp, she’s just a cog in the machine. But when she finally gets a promising assignment, everything goes very wrong, and an encounter with the so-called “hero” leaves her badly injured.  And, to her horror, compared to the other bodies strewn about, she’s the lucky one.

So, of course, then she gets laid off.

With no money and no mobility, with only her anger and internet research acumen, she discovers her suffering at the hands of a hero is far from unique. When people start listening to the story that her data tells, she realizes she might not be as powerless as she thinks.

Because the key to everything is data: knowing how to collate it, how to manipulate it, and how to weaponize it. By tallying up the human cost these caped forces of nature wreak upon the world, she discovers that the line between good and evil is mostly marketing.  And with social media and viral videos, she can control that appearance.

It’s not too long before she’s employed once more, this time by one of the worst villains on earth. As she becomes an increasingly valuable lieutenant, she might just save the world.

A sharp, witty, modern debut, Hench explores the individual cost of justice through a fascinating mix of Millennial office politics, heroism measured through data science, body horror, and a profound misunderstanding of quantum mechanics.

Amanda: A henchwoman getting revenge with spreadsheets!

Sarah: I have been talking about this book for a few weeks and I’m so excited for it to be released.

Miss Meteor by Tehlor Kay Mejia

    Author: Tehlor Kay Mejia
Released: September 22, 2020 by HarperTeen
    Genre: , ,

There hasn’t been a winner of the Miss Meteor beauty pageant who looks like Lita Perez or Chicky Quintanilla in all its history. But that’s not the only reason Lita wants to enter the contest, or why her ex-best friend Chicky wants to help her. The road to becoming Miss Meteor isn’t about being perfect; it’s about sharing who you are with the world—and loving the parts of yourself no one else understands. So to pull off the unlikeliest underdog story in pageant history, Lita and Chicky are going to have to forget the past and imagine a future where girls like them are more than enough—they are everything.

Witty and heartfelt with characters that leap off the page, Miss Meteor is acclaimed authors Anna-Marie McLemore and Tehlor Kay Mejia’s first book together.

Aarya: The blurb doesn’t say this, but apparently one of the heroines is made of stardust and came down to Earth on a meteor.

Tara: This cover is working for me and so is the idea of an underdog running for a beauty pageant, making up with her former best friend along the way. Give me all the strong friendship feels!

Released: September 29, 2020 by Avon
    Genre: ,
Series: The Mating Habits of Scounrels #2

USA Today bestselling author Vivienne Lorret continues her charming new trilogy with a bluestocking whose search for information on the mating habits of scoundrels has her stumbling upon the missing heir to an earldom… in the London underworld.

Jane Pickerington never intended to start a brawl in a brothel. She only wanted to research her book. Very much looking forward to Rosie Danan’s The Roommate, a book I’ve heard so much about for months now. It sounds like it’s living up to its hype. I’m also so ready for a new Courtney Milan.

I plan to start Andrea Penrose’s Wrexford & Sloane series at some point but I’m glad to read that it’s Ellen’s favorite series. I really do wish that I liked Hester Fox’s first book better than I did, as it has so many things that I would typically enjoy. I probably should read another of her books before deciding to walk away.

Finally, I look forward to reviews of Vampires Never Get Old. It sounds fun and it’s a good time of year to read it.

  2. DiscoDollyDeb says:

Home from work because schools are closed today in anticipation of bad weather from Hurricane Sally—which now appears to be moving to the east of Louisiana: stay safe Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida Gulf Coast bitches! I got up early anyway to check the Weather Channel and download some new releases: Skye Warren’s GOLDMINE, Ainsley Booth’s FILTHY LIAR (here at last!), and Natasha Knight’s dark romance duet, UNHOLY UNION & UNHOLY INTENT. I thought about buying J. Kenner’s MY FALLEN SAINT, but it’s pricey for an ebook ($6.99), plus it’s the first book in a trilogy and the other two aren’t scheduled until 2021. I think I’ll wait on them. Unfortunately, another book I was hoping would drop today, Kate Canterbary’s m/m romance, ORIENTATION, was nowhere to be seen. Canterbary recently expanded her Christmas short story, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (antagonists-to-lovers involving two teachers who—if you’re familiar with the Walsh universe—teach at Lauren Walsh’s school), and, at the end of the book, we meet the school’s gym teacher—who’s miserable because his boyfriend has left him. The end of PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT said ORIENTATION was releasing today, but that does not appear to be the case. Epic sigh! But, of course, next week I’m looking forward to COMMON GOAL, and on September 29, Annika Martin releases the final book in her Manhattan Billionaires series, RETURN BILLIONAIRE TO SENDER (the heroine is a mail carrier) and CD Reiss drops CROWNE RULES, the next in her series about the Crowne family. This one appears to include a D/s dynamic.

  3. A new Courtney Milan? I’m so there for it! I thank you for the list, even if my bank account is screaming in agony.

  4. Carrie G says:

I’ll be grabbing ACE by Angela Chen. I have an Ace daughter and two bisexual daughters, and much of the flack they’ve gotten is from the LGBTQ+ community itself. While the discrimination against bi’s in the community surprised the heck out of me, the discrimination against asexuals seems to come more from a lack of understanding, from both the queer and straight communities. Being Ace can be a painful place to be, and it’s time someone pointed out that painting someone not interested in sex as “frigid” is wrong and damaging. I’m hoping this book is good and gets the exposure it needs.

  5. KitBee says:

I’m SO excited for Naomi Novik’s new book! Based on the cover art, it’s not necessarily going to be in the same vein as UPROOTED and SPINNING SILVER, which is a bit disappointing, but I’m game for whatever Novik does!

I’m also really looking forward to Jen DeLuca’s WELL PLAYED, which comes out on 9/22. I thought WELL MET was cute, and I’m excited for more Renaissance Faire romance!

  6. MaryK says:

The goodreads reviews say A Deadly Education is YA and ends on a cliffhanger. :/

  7. Amanda says:

@MaryK: I disagree with the YA labeling and the publisher isn’t a YA imprint. The thing about Goodreads is that people can shelve books as whatever and that gets added to its genres as a sort of crowdsourcing. There’s also a WHOLE SEPARATE ISSUE of fantasy, sci-fi, and horror written by women automatically getting categorized as YA because it has a teenaged character, when men who write in those same genres with young adult characters are shelved in adult fiction.

  8. Trix says:

I’m eager to read ACE, and curious (worried?) about how the whole demisexual/demiromantic subgroup will be addressed…supposedly we’re 1-3% of the ace spectrum, so there’s definitely that feeling of being an outlier on all sides (at least for me). There’d be extra points for detailing how people who formerly identified as allo or ace discovered/came to terms with being demi (realizing I wasn’t a broken allo helped, but Covid-19 isolation has definitely shaken how I feel about the whole thing)…

  9. MaryK says:

@Amanda – Hmm, I didn’t know that about the Goodreads genre labels. I checked it because it’s apparently set at a high school rather than a university.

  10. denise says:

Loved the ARC of All Scot and Bothered. Does not disappoint.

  11. Ak says:

So excited for Allie Brosh’s second book! I really missed her blogging. I rarely get hard copies anymore due to space, buy I make exceptions for ones like this. Sept 22nd can’t come fast enough.

  12. DonnaMarie says:

I don’t know what I like more, sharing what I’m excited for or finding books I didn’t know were out there, like The Roommate, which is now safely ensconced on my GBPL reserve list.

Few things have me more excited than a new Naomi Novik series, luckily there’s only one person ahead of me on the reserve list.

I will add Solutions and Other Problems from the always delightful Allie Bosh. Her previous essay compilation of essays, Hyperbole and a Half contained the single most accurate description of depression I have ever read.

  13. Lisa F says:

A lot of great ones; Byrne’s return to dark gothic romance and Miss Meteor are at the top of my TBR list, along with The Roommates (getting great reviews across the board), the Milan, Just one Taste and Love All Year.

I want desperately to find a Lorret that works for me but the last two I tried didn’t.

  14. Cece says:

Got my copy of The Roommate in the mail today and judging by the hype and first wave of positive reviews, I’m very, very excited to get to this sex positive debut.

I’ve preordered Jane Igharo’s debut Ties That Tether and Diana Quincy’s Avon-debut Her Night With the Duke which both come out 9/29. I’m a longtime Byrne fan, but I haven’t finished her Victorian Rebels books yet (got stuck on The Duke) and feel as if the series has begun to flounder a little. I’m torn. Should I finish that series or just start her new one??

  15. The Other Kate says:

Excited to read ACE! It’s also nice to see the support from the site 🙂

  16. Susanna says:

GR “genres” are crowd-sourced, from the shelf names people use. Two usages of a standard shelf name (like “mystery” or “YA”) are enough to create a genre listing for the book.

There is, of course, a problem that comes in with genre confusion, seen in things like coming of age stories getting a YA label, whether it’s appropriate or not, and straight history getting on the “historical fiction” shelves. I always look at the relative amounts of shelving, if in doubt.

  17. Irene Headley says:

Simone de Beauvoir was a flavour of awful, sadly: she had, as a teacher, a sexual relationship with at least two students, and lost her teaching license for a time as a result. She also campaigned for the age of consent in France to be removed

Multiple women said that they found their relationships with her (and Sartre) traumatising.

  18. Sneezy says:

@Irene Headley Thanks so much for the heads up!!! The blurb now sounds extremely gross and exploitative… I’ll be off, drowning my sorrows in bubble tea and books NOT written by sex offenders.

  19. CLAUDIA (the other one) says:

So excited for Ace! As a… some sort of ace person (demi? Grey? Str8 up ace??? Who knows), it was a hard hard journey to finding a label that fits AND EVEN now it’s a struggle to figure out what it means for my life. I hope the book is insightful and healing.

  20. Big D Energy (aka Daniela) says:

I’m just here to say I’m extremely excited for COMMON GOAL! I preordered it and have been eagerly waiting for it to download to my ipad so I can join the bad decisions book club! If you haven’t read the previous 3 books in the serious they are seriously worth it, especially HEATED RIVALRY.

  21. KarenF says:

It’s not on your list, but I’ve been counting down the days to Well Played (the next book in the Well Met Renaissance Fair series), since mid summer. I’ve already re-read Well Met twice in anticipation.

Hopefully it holds up to the first book.

    Release date is the 22nd.
