Shrill

Shrill by Lindy West is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and is being price-matched. The book does deal with Lindy’s experience with eating, rape culture, and internet trolls, so there’s some pretty heavy stuff. It has a 4.1-star rating on Goodreads.
Coming of age in a culture that demands women be as small, quiet, and compliant as possible–like a porcelain dove that will also have sex with you–writer and humorist Lindy West quickly discovered that she was anything but.
From a painfully shy childhood in which she tried, unsuccessfully, to hide her big body and even bigger opinions; to her public war with stand-up comedians over rape jokes; to her struggle to convince herself, and then the world, that fat people have value; to her accidental activism and never-ending battle royale with Internet trolls, Lindy narrates her life with a blend of humor and pathos that manages to make a trip to the abortion clinic funny and wring tears out of a story about diarrhea.
With inimitable good humor, vulnerability, and boundless charm, Lindy boldly shares how to survive in a world where not all stories are created equal and not all bodies are treated with equal respect, and how to weather hatred, loneliness, harassment, and loss–and walk away laughing. Shrill provocatively dissects what it means to become self-aware the hard way, to go from wanting to be silent and invisible to earning a living defending the silenced in all caps.

The Smoke Hunter by Jacquelyn Benson is $1.99! Benson was on a recnet-ish podcast and I immediately put this on hold at my library. It sounds like a lot of fun. Have any of you read this one? I’ll be sure to report back after I’ve finished it.
THE DEBUT OF A CAPTIVATING VOICE AND RIVETING STORYTELLER!
Frustrated suffragette and would-be archaeologist Ellie Mallory stumbles across a map to a city that shouldn’t exist, a jungle metropolis alive and flourishing centuries after the Mayan civilization mysteriously collapsed. Discovering it would make her career, but Ellie isn’t the only one after the prize. A disgraced professor and his ruthless handler are hot on her heels, willing to go any extreme to acquire the map for themselves.
To race them through the uncharted jungle, Ellie needs a guide. The only one with the expertise is maverick surveyor Adam Bates. But with his determination to nose his way into Ellie’s many secrets, Bates is a dangerous partner.
As Ellie gets closer to her goal, she realizes it’s not just her ambitions at stake. A powerful secret lies hidden in the heart of the city – and if it falls into the wrong hands, it could shake the very fate of the world.

The Duke’s Guide to Correct Behavior by Megan Frampton is $2.99. This is book one in the Dukes Behaving Badly series – do dukes behave otherwise? Maybe in some other genre. Readers who enjoyed it and left positive reviews mentioned the humor and the dialogue, and the nobleman/governess trope as among their favorites. However, others warn that the characters seemed more fitting of a modern setting.
All of London knows the Duke of Rutherford has position and wealth. They also whisper that he’s dissolute, devilish, and determinedly unwed. So why, everyone is asking, has he hired a governess?
When Miss Lily Russell crosses the threshold of the Duke of Rutherford’s stylish townhouse, she knows she has come face to face with sensual danger. For this is no doting papa. Rather, his behavior is scandalous, and his reputation rightly earned. And his pursuit of her is nearly irresistible—but resist she must for the sake of her pupil.
As for the duke himself, it was bad enough when his unknown child landed on his doorstep. Now Lily, with her unassuming beauty, has aroused his most wicked fantasies—and, shockingly, his desire to change his wanton ways. He’s determined to become worthy of her, and so he asks for her help in correcting his behavior.
But Lily has a secret, one that, if it becomes known, could change everything . . .

The Truth About Love and Dukes by Laura Lee Guhrke is $3.99! This is the first book in the Dear Lady Truelove series and the heroine runs an advice column. Readers seem divided on the heroine. Some found her independent and confident, while others found her too brash for their liking. Have you read this one?
Dear Lady Truelove . . . I have fallen in love, truly and completely in love, for the first time. The man whom I hold in such passionate regard, however, is not of my station. He is a painter, a brilliant artist. Needless to say, my family would not approve . . .
Henry, Duke of Torquil, wouldn’t be caught reading the wildly popular “Dear Lady Truelove” column, but when its advice causes his mother to embark on a scandalous elopement, an outraged Henry decides the author of this tripe must be stopped before she can ruin any more lives. Though Lady Truelove’s identity is a closely guarded secret, Henry has reason to suspect the publisher of the notorious column, beautiful and provoking Irene Deverill, is also its author.
For Irene, it’s easy to advise others to surrender to passion, but when she meets the Duke of Torquil, she soon learns that passion comes at a price. When one impulsive, spur-of-the-moment kiss pulls her into a scorching affair with Henry, it could destroy her beloved newspaper, her career, and her independence. But in the duke’s arms, surrender is so, so sweet . . .

Karma Girl by Jennifer Estep is under a dollar on Amazon AU/US (and probably elsewhere). I haven’t read it, but it looks like it could be a fun take on a world with superheroes.
(Why yes, I did just start reading Hench.)
Kennedy Ryan’s Grip trilogy boxset is on sale for .99c on Amazon US. This edition also comes with a newly published novella that I think is an epilogue of sorts? I haven’t read this series but have other books by her and I feel it’s definitely worth buying the boxset for the price.
I noticed SLIPPERY CREATURES by KJ Charles is still (again?) 99 cents in case anyone missed it earlier.
SNOW FALLING ON CEDARS by David Guterson is $2.99 right now. This beautifully written, atmospheric novel is worth reading. I bought a hardbackcopy for my mother-in-law when it was first published, and sat down and read it before giving it to her. I was swept up in the place, time, and emotions Guterson so skillfully wove together. This is part forbidden love story, part crime drama, and partly a tale post-WWII America.
JUST LIKE THAT by Cole McCade is $1.99 on Kobo right now.
